Sweden : 2009 Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden

2009 Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden Guidelines The Malmberg Scholarship will be awarded to financially assist up to one year of proposed academic study in Sweden.

Background: The Malmberg Scholarship and Fellowship Program is supported by earnings from the endowment established by a generous contribution to the American Swedish Institute (ASI) from Cornelia Malmberg. Cornelia Malmberg was a lifelong educator who spent time abroad teaching. A native of Winthrop, Minnesota, Cornelia Malmberg took great interest in the work of ASI after her retirement. Her particular areas of interest were educating youth about Sweden, particularly the Swedish language.

Annual Timeline:
Summer-Fall: Scholarship and Fellowship publicized
September 1: Applications accepted
November 15: Application deadline
Nov.- Dec.: Applications reviewed and finalists interviewed by phone
January 15: Recipients of Scholarship and Fellowship announced

The project schedule must fall between the dates of June 1, 2009, and August 31, 2010. Project duration depends on the individual proposal (see application).

Eligibility: Applicants for the Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden must be a U.S. resident who is either (a) a student enrolled in a degree-granting program at an accredited college or university, or (b) a qualified scholar engaged in study or research whose work can be enhanced by study in Sweden.

Awards: Scholarships are usually granted for a full academic year term (nine months), but can also be awarded for study periods of shorter duration. Both the Malmberg Scholarship and the Malmberg Fellowship (see separate description) are awarded at an annual presentation and banquet event to honor present and past recipients and featuring a notable honored speaker. The awards are administered by the American Swedish Institute.

Ireland : Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland SFI PhD position in population genetics/genetic mapping

An exciting opportunity for a PhD student in the area of neurogenetics/population genetics has arisen through the Science Foundation Ireland funded project: "The application of MRI to identify endophenotypes in focal epilepsy".

Rapid progress has recently been made in the field of human genetics. With the maturation of the Human Genome and HapMap projects, it is now possible to simultaneously assess the contribution of millions of polymorphic sites across the human genome to the development and treatment of common disease. However the success of such large scale genetic mapping studies depends heavily on the quality of the underlying patient phenotypes.

The experiences of the research community have shown that endophenotypes are required to augment the power of genetic mapping studies in neurological disorders. Based on in-vivo Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (QMRI), this programme will identify subtle structural variations in the brain which are both heritable and involved in the development of temporal lobe epilepsy. These novel endophenotypes will then be measured in a larger cohort of epilepsy patients for whom whole genome association data is already available. This combined large-scale genetics and neuroimaging dataset will provide a strong basis not only for empowered genetic mapping of epilepsy but also improved application of MRI in the clinical setting.

Research will be carried out within a translation medical/research team at Beaumont Hospital and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. This is a 3 year project starting in September 2008. You will be provided with excellent training in research methods and supported in your development as an independent researcher. Through the international scientific consortium EPIGEN (www.epigen.ie), part of your training will be conducted at prestigious overseas laboratories.

The successful candidate will:

• Have a minimum of an upper second-class honours degree in mathematics/statistics/physics/genetics or related undergraduate science degree.
• Have the ability to work in a highly motivated team and the initiative to work independently when required.
• Have strong communication and organisational skills.
• Have experience in programming and/or the application of magnetic resonance imaging (both desirable but not essential).

UK : The University of Manchester PhD studentship

FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF CSMD1 IN HEAD AND NECK CANCER

The Medical Genetics Research Group invites applications for a prestigious three-year PhD studentship funded through the Gardner Bequest Fund. The project is due to commence in January 2009. Funding will cover UK/EU tuition fees and provide an annual tax-free stipend of £10,000. Non-EU nationals are welcome to apply, but will be required to fund the additional overseas rate of fee.

Head and neck cancer is one of the commonest cancers globally and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. CSMD1 is one of the largest genes in the human genome and is a frequent target of chromosomal deletions in head, neck and prostate cancers. However, little is known of its function. The aims of this study are to elucidate the function of this gene and its role in head and neck cancer. The study will aim to analyse phenotypic effects of both silencing expression and forced expression of CSMD1 in relevant model cells lines. In addition, the transcriptome of the modulated cells will be studied by expression arrays to identify downstream gene expression changes that may offer insight into pathways in which CSMD1 acts.

The successful candidate will be part of a vibrant multidisciplinary research environment and acquire knowledge and advanced laboratory skills in molecular, cellular and cancer biology. All students within the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences are also encouraged to take part in transferrable research skills training alongside their PhD to further develop their options at the post-doctoral stage.

We are seeking scientific or clinical (dental/medical) graduates of the highest calibre for this fully-funded studentship. Science graduates are expected to have at least a 2:1 in their first degree or a Master of Science degree in a relevant area. This is an ideal project for prospective PhD candidates looking to establish a career within cancer biology, genetics, oncology or pathology.

Fully funded studentships are available to conduct research at the Whittle Laboratory in fields associated with Turbomachinery Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Heat Transfer, Noise and Instrumentation. The Whittle Laboratory is one of the foremost laboratories specialising in research into the fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of all types of turbomachinery. The available projects range from fundamental studies of fluid dynamic and thermodynamic behaviour to research into complete systems. Specific problem areas currently include noise emissions, improving the efficiency of fans, compressors and turbines, the effects of real geometry and manufacturing on the performance of axial machines, the life of high pressure turbines, the design of turbomachinery components and component interactions. Most of the projects will use a combination of experiments and computational modelling.

The studentships are for 3.5 years, from October 2008 or January 2009, subject to funding availability. They may be funded by the EPSRC, industry, or the European Commission. For UK and EC students, the remuneration will be at the EPSRC studentship rate (currently 12,600 per annum) and all fees paid. For UK students and those EU students who have been resident in the UK for the previous 3 years for educational purposes, an additional 'top-up' of 3000/year may be payable as a part of a CASE award with industrial support. For overseas students without any additional support, the remuneration will be at c. 12,600/year and all fees paid.

We are recruiting a PhD student for a joint research project between the University of Bath and Hewlett Packard Laboratories in nearby Bristol. A scholarship is available to cover an annual stipend and fees; coverage of fees is subject to eligibility.*

The student will join an established research team in Bath's Media Technology Research Centre (MTRC) exploring Artistic / Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR). The project will develop new algorithms for stylizing video clips into art/animations. It will require a cross-disciplinary approach, contributing new techniques to
both Computer Graphics and Computer Vision.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in mathematical aspects of Computer Science; prior experience in Computer Graphics or Computer Vision would be an advantage. Candidates should have at least a 2.1 undergraduate degree or an MSc in a relevant discipline.

We have a diverse programme of world-leading research in the MTRC. We focus on Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, and Computer Music/Signal Processing. Many MTRC projects span at least two of these research interests.
