The doctoral projects connect to and reinforce the TPM research programmes Innovations Systems, Reflection on Technology and Multi-Actor Systems.The projects address the following subjects: A) Networking by Academic Spin-offs as a Critical Success Factor: This project aims to identify the character of and critical changes in supportive networks of academic spin-offs at different stages, and to connect these changes with firm performance in terms of innovativeness and growth.B) Universities of Technology and Entrepreneurs forming a Knowledge Network: Using social network analysis, this project examines how knowledge exchange between technical universities and regional entrepreneurs takes place and is transformed into innovation.C) Academic Entrepreneurship and Academic Productivity: This project focuses on the impact of university-industry collaboration on the productivity and quality of university research output.D) Personality and Entrepreneurship: This project focuses on the relationship between specific personal characteristics of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial success.E) Socially Responsible Innovation and Entrepreneurship: This project investigates the social and ethical aspects of scientific and technological innovations.

We seek ambitious individuals with a Master’s degree who want to write a PhD thesis in the field of entrepreneurship. Depending on the PhD position, candidates will have a background in either economics, or in one of the social-technical sciences, especially business administration, public administration, psychology or philosophy. Good social and communication skills are a requirement for these posts, as part of the research will involve participation in team-based projects.

The research project
The starting point of the project Europeanizing spaces is the notion that cultural encounters and cultural spaces at the periphery of established national or European communities are essential in the construction of European cultural identities. Small-scale cultural encounters between individuals or heterogeneous groups, ranging from cosmopolitan artists, political dissidents and refugees to members of the academic community and migrant workers, can open up new cultural spaces. In some cases these alternative or contested spaces may grow out to become new or alternative master narratives of European identity; hence ‘Europeanizing spaces'.

We are first and foremost interested in the examination of less visible phenomena that help us to disclose the multiplicity of identities of and in Europe. We study these because they enable us to contest contemporary discourses on European identity that progressively crystallize in grand narratives of, for instance, reconciliation, ‘no more war' or European cultural diversity. We claim that these master narratives have obstructed understanding of the mechanisms and practices at work in the construction of a multiplicity of old, new and conflicting European identities.

We consider studying phenomena at the periphery of established national and European communities to be increasingly important as a result of two parallel processes: the growing exclusiveness of the discourse on European identity, and globalization. The movement of images, people and commodities across the globe also impinges on political, social, cultural changes within Europe. The legacies of past and contemporary global migrations are having a profound impact on how European identities are constructed.

Overall, the candidate is expected to conduct research on IT-enabled innovation leading to international journal publications and a PhD thesis. The research will combine multiple methods of investigation, qualitative as well as quantitative. The candidate will be supervised by Prof. Rik Maes and Dr Michel Avital, who have extensive experience in guiding doctorate students' research, and can provide guidance in a wide range of research methods as well as access to a large set of local and multinational organizations.

IT-enabled innovation refers to the catalytic roles of information environments and information technologies in the ability of individuals and organizations to produce something ingenious or at least new in a particular context. The objective of this project is to explore and provide solid evidence regarding the drivers, processes, recurring patterns, prevailing work practices and related socio-technical phenomena that are conducive to IT-enabled innovation. As opposed to the detection of error and the control of chronic problems, the study should be focused on positive change that involves the encouragement of human strengths and emphasizes a positive stance toward our capacity to construct better organizations and technologies. The resulting contribution is expected to provide further knowledge that can be used to enhance creative work, unstructured syntheses, serendipitous discoveries and any other form of computer-aided tasks that involve unexplored outcomes or aim to enhance our ability to go boldly where no one has gone before. The particular research questions will be framed in line with the interests of the candidate.

Job description
Both at WU PB and at IVF CAAS, the genetic relationship between a large number of B. rapa accessions representing different geographical origins and different morphotypes was studied. This revealed that genetic relatedness was more influenced by region then by morphotype and suggested that different morphotypes (turnips, oils) emerged independently in Asia and Europe. In crosses between early flowering Yellow Sarson and late flowering Japanese Vegetable Turnip one major QTL explaining 40% of turnip formation was identified, which colocalized with a floweringtime QTL, with the FLC2 transcription factor as candidate gene. In this AIO project, we will follow a genetic approach to unravel the genetics of turnip formation, its relationship to flowering time, and to investigate whether the same set or different sets of genes underly turnip formation in Asia and Europe. Gene targeted markers will be developed, an in vitro system will be developed to synchronise turnip formation, metabolites and hormones will be measured and gene expression profiles will be studied between bulks of lines with opposite genotypes and phenotypes. Combined data will shed light on the genetics underlying turnip formation in B. rapa species.

The project Space in Ancient Greek Literature, forms part of a larger project, a multi-volume literary history of ancient Greek narrative. The Studies in Ancient Greek Narrative (SAGN), published by Brill, Leiden, aims at offering for the first time in the history of classical scholarship a full description of the art of narration in Ancient Greek literature, ranging from epic, via historiography, drama, oratory, and philosophy, to the novel. This history of the techniques of storytelling in antiquity lays bare the roots of the modern European novel. After one volume on the narrator (2004), one on time (2007), the third volume will deal with the representation of space (in a broad sense, including objects which act as ‘props' in that space).

Current application of bacteria is hindered by the lack of knowledge on the effects of stresses on cellular activity, most importantly abiotic stresses prevailing on site (e.g., desiccation or nutrient starvation), and stresses as a result of pollution itself (e.g., toxicity). You will perform research in the area of functional genomics of microbial biodegradation and stress response, and participate in education within the Laboratory of Microbiology. The research will be executed as part of a large EC project within the seventh framework programme entitled BACSIN (Bacterial Abiotic Cellular Stress and Survival Improvement Network) in which 16 partners from 8 European countries are involved. You will investigate genome-wide catabolic and stress expression in anaerobic bacteria that are important for the bioremediation of halogenated pollutants in anoxic environments, such as sediments and groundwater. These bacteria grow by anaerobic respiration, using the halogenated pollutants, e.g. tetrachloroethene, as terminal electron acceptor. Basically, these organisms clean up the the environment by breathing toxic pollutants. In your research, you will expose anaerobic dehalogenating bacteria to different stresses, and analyze their response by functional genomics approaches, including DNA-microarray-based transcriptomics as well as proteomics. In addition, you will construct reporter strains that can indicate catabolic function and stress response in microcosm studies. Key cellular factors and regulatory networks determining the interplay between stress-survival and pollutant catabolism will be unveiled, and predictive models for cell behaviour will be produced in collaboration with the researchers at the VU University Amsterdam.

Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Behavioural Phenotypes

School of Psychology

Two full time, three year PhD studentships are available from October 2008 in the area of neurodevelopmental disorder and behavioural phenotypes. The studentships are available for the study of cognitive, emotional and behavioural difference and disorder in children and young adults with rare genetic syndromes. For the studentships there will be close collaboration with syndrome support groups and Great Ormond Street Hospital. The new PhD Postgraduates will join a team of five research fellows, six PhD Postgraduates and three Clinical Psychology Doctoral Postgraduates at the University of Birmingham who are studying neurodevelopmental disorders and gene-environment interactions in people with intellectual disability.

The successful candidates will have a First or high Upper Second Class Honours degree in psychology and unbounded enthusiasm for research and the promotion of the wellbeing of people with severe disability.

The studentships will be at the basic UK research council rate (expected £12,600 p.a. in 2008/9) to provide support over the three-year period and will cover tuition fees. The successful candidates might also be eligible to contribute to our paid Teaching Assistant programme.

Law and Drama: How Theatrical Practices are defined by, with, and against the Law in France & French-speaking regions (13th-16th centuries)

Tasks:
The candidate is expected to research and complete a Ph.D. dissertation within a period of three years (four years in the case of a part-time position).

Requirements
Required education/skills:The candidate is required to have a research master degree in either French literature or Medieval History or an equivalent qualification (those graduating before August 31, 2008 can apply); experience in archival research in French institutions; knowledge of late Medieval French and Latin and proven interest in medieval performance and/or communication studies.

Australia: Masters Scholarships in Environmental Science/ Biotechnology, Murdoch University

Two years masters scholarships are available at the School of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology. The Masters scholarships will provide a stipend of $A24,000 per year tax-free for up to 2 years (fees are also included but only for New Zealand and Australian citizens and permanent residents, otherwise international fees apply).

The successful candidates will join an industry funded project investigating the DiCOM ® process, a novel biological waste to energy process. Suitable applicants should have background in any of biotechnology, biology, microbiology or environmental science however those having a related background are also encouraged to apply.

Should the candidate secure an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), the scholarship will supplement the Award to provide a combined stipend of $A28,000 per year tax-free for up to 2 years. Allowances in addition to the scholarship include laboratory expenses, local and/or overseas conference travel and assistance with thesis costs.

The project will be based in the Environmental Biotechnology group at Murdoch University and will focus on the thermophilic anaerobic digestion phase of the DiCOM ® process. Initially research will centre on control of organic acids, ammonia levels and viability of thermophilic bacteria in this industrial process. However, candidates will also be encouraged to generate their own ideas and initiatives. As research will be conducted in conjunction with industry, is likely that laboratory, pilot and full scale plants will be investigated.

We welcome enquiries from candidates having appropriate qualifications (Bachelors degree), or whose industry experience qualifies them for admission to Masters study, and who are interested in engaging in first class fundamental and applied research that will benefit the environment.
