The position will be on three-year fixed-term basis, with consideration for tenure after satisfactory completion of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

Applicants should possess a PhD degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, with practical experience in the industry and a strong background in teaching and research. The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses and be strongly committed to research. He/She will also be expected to interact closely with other members in the Department.

Applicants should have a strong background in the area of geotechnical engineering or foundation engineering. Experience in remote field monitoring, instrumentation or numerical modeling would be an advantage.

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the five engineering departments in the Faculty of Engineering. UK:PhD Studentships Psychosis And Substance Misuse University of Birmingham

School of Psychology - Psychosis and Addiction Research groups

Two full time, three year PhD studentships are available from October 2008 in the area of the psychosis and substance misuse. The studentships are available for the study of interaction of psychosis and substance misuse and their impact on professional and family carers.

There will be close collaboration with the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust's early intervention in psychosis and addiction services. You will join two very active research groups with a portfolio of MRC trials, NIHR and DH services research with over 15 research fellows and 8 postgraduate PhD , MRes and Clinical Psychology Doctoral students.

The successful candidates will have a First or high Upper Second Class Honours degree in psychology.

The studentships will be at the basic UK research council rate (expected £12,600 p.a. in 2008/9) to provide support over the three-year period and will cover tuition fees. The successful candidates might also be eligible to contribute to our paid Teaching Assistant programme.

The Faculty of Humanities offers a PhD position in this field of research as of September 1st 2008. Interested candidates should formulate a research project that addresses the issue of Mood and Modality which combines the perspective of semantic typology with that of semantic modelling, as outlined above in the description of the aims of the research group. The IMS group is interested in developing complex, multidisciplinary, high-tech products, and especially in the conceptual and systems definition phase, to fulfil criteria such as adaptability. Mechatronics machines, e.g., printing systems, are typical complex, multidisciplinary products. The IMS group is now looking at the product architecture definition for "adaptable machines". In printing systems, adaptability is the ability to adjust flexibly to changing printing tasks, environment, and physical conditions.The IMS group is taking part in the Octopus project (www.esi.nl/site/projects/octopus/home.asp) to develop highly adaptable mechatronics systems along with ESI (Embedded Systems Institute) in Eindhoven and Océ in Venlo. The PhD student will explore "adaptable architecture" within Octopus.

You should hold an MSc in mechanical engineering or mechatronics engineering. You should have a strong background in engineering design and control engineering with excellent programming skills and communication skills (written and spoken). Knowledge of computer science, in particular artificial intelligence, is advantageous but not a must. You will be part of a closely integrated multidisciplinary research team with roughly 20 team members. It is your job as a PhD student to gain knowledge of your research topic and apply it in an industrial application.
