The Institute for Neuroscience and Biophysics – Medicine at the Research Center Jülich provides an excellent multi-disciplinary and interactive research environment close to the culturally vibrant cities of Aachen, Düsseldorf and Köln. Within the institute we combine expertise in neuroimaging (research-dedicated 1.5T/3T/4T MRI systems, high-field ani-mal MR, PET, combined human PET – 3 T MR system), neuroscience and clinical research with state-of-the-art laboratories for histological and neurochemical analysis such as receptor autoradiography.

The research focus of the "Cortial Systems and Neurotransmitter Receptors" group (Head: Prof. Dr. Karl Zilles) lies in the multimodal integration of anatomical and func-tional data in order to gain insight into the mechanisms underlying brain function and dysfunction. In particular we are striving to combine information on the cortical anatomy with functional neuroimaging, models of effective connectivity and pharmacological approaches to investigate visual feature processing and cortical motor control.

We are now looking for two PhD students with a strong interest in this multidisciplinary research. A background in neuroanatomy and/or fMRI analysis techniques (SPM, FSL, MATLAB etc) would be of advantage, readiness to learn new methods a necessary requirement. Applicants should have a degree in Neuroscience, Psychology, Medicine, Informatics, Biology or related areas.

Payment will correspond to salary grade 13/2 Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD). Three years fully funded studentships are available to students who plan to enrol in MPhil or PhD programme in Sociology, Philosophy and Theology within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Awards are payable in instalments on enrolment and continuation is subject to satisfactory annual progression.

The MSc in Mental Health Services at the world leading Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London is a fully modular one year full time (or two years part time) Masters programme. It provides a sound practical and theoretical knowledge base for mental health services research. The aim is to equip students with skills and knowledge to undertake mental health services research at the highest scientific level. The course is designed to meet the training needs of those interested in advancing their careers in mental health services research, policy and practice.

Understanding long-term nutrient dynamics: a palaeolimnological approach

The Environment Agency has awarded funding to include a one-year Masters by Research degree to reconstruct the long-term history of eutrophication and associated catchment-based human impact in the only extant lake in East Yorkshire, the SSSI, Hornsea Mere.

Shallow, fertile lakes are complex and unpredictable, and in Britain have often been subject to extensive anthropogenic eutrophication. Without a detailed understanding of the history of long-term ecosystem dynamics and associated changes in land-use, it is difficult to define realistic restoration targets. Using a range of proxy indicators including diatoms, this palaeolimnological project focuses on reconstructing ecosystem response to catchment change over the last ca. 10,000 years, from analysis of a dated 7.8m lake sediment core. Diatom analysis is central to the project; the student will be given scope to develop their own research interests outside this, by choosing a second focus either of palaeolimnology (e.g. ostracod, mollusc or plant macrofossil analysis) or catchment analysis (pollen analysis and numerical modelling), as part of the larger project. In terms of career development, the student will benefit considerably from a close working association with the Environment Agency and Natural England, who manage water quality issues at the Mere.

You will join an established research team which includes Dr Jane Reed (diatoms and palaeolimnology) and Dr M Jane Bunting (pollen modelling). The preferred start date is October 2008 at the latest. Applicants for this position should have a good BSc (1st or 2.1) in physical geography or environmental science, and some practical experience of palaeolimnology or biomonitoring. Only UK/EU citizens are eligible for full funding (maintenance, stipend and tuition fees). The student stipend will be £9,900 pa (tax free).

The Masters by Research (MRes) in Cardiovascular Sciences is a pioneering new course designed to prepare individuals for a career in cardiovascular research. It is of direct benefit to students looking to broaden their research skills and experience before embarking on PhD training or for clinicians seeking to undertake independent cardiovascular research.

Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of mortality and morbidity across the developed world and major therapeutic targets of academic and industrial research. The challenge is to incorporate the multidisciplinary approaches viewed as crucial to the translational of laboratory discoveries into patient care. The MRes seeks to address this by combining a series of cardiovascular seminars and workshops with practical research experience.

The initial stages of the MRes provide a series of masterclasses covering the fundamentals of cardiovascular biology, the cellular basis of cardiac disease and epidemiological insights into cardiovascular risk factors. Delivered within the purpose-built Core Technology Facility, contributors to the MRes include eminent clinicians and scientists within the Cardiovascular Research Group - comprising over 40 independent researchers.

The MRes is research driven, so the focus of the course is on two intense research placements allowing students to select specialist areas according to their career objectives. Project areas span the spectrum of cardiovascular science including cardiac physiology, cell signalling, vascular calcification, tissue engineering, hypertension, imaging and angiogenesis. By experiencing different research environments the aim is to provide techniques allowing students to progress into PhD training with a stronger foundation than those directly from undergraduate study. Alternatively, the course provides an ideal footing for clinicians seeking to branch out into independent research alongside their professional training.

Candidates holding (or expecting to obtain) a minimum 2:1 or equivalent undergraduate degree in the biomedical sciences are invited to apply for 2008/09 entry. The MRes is a one-year full time Masters commencing in September 2008.

Hongkong: Young Academics Scholarship, The Chinese University & University of Cambridge Joint Scholarship for Young Academics

The Joint Conference organisers have set up a fund from which scholarships will be awarded to young academics. The scholarship aims to provide young academics with financial support and also the opportunity to present a paper before eminent lawyers and academics in the field. The scholarship will cover registration costs for the Conference and will include some contribution towards associated costs.

Interested applicants will need to submit a paper relating to the main conference theme (Effective Judicial Review: A Cornerstone of Good Governance).

Information for interested applicants:

1. Applicants must have held a full time salaried teaching or research post for less than five years or must be currently enrolled as a full time postgraduate student at a tertiary institution.

USA: International Scholarships in Waste Management Research and Education

The scholarships are awarded each year by The Foundation for PhD or postdoctoral level. Scholarships recognize graduate students pursuing excellence in waste management research and education. Recipients are chosen based on credentials and potential contributions to the solid waste industry and its scientific contributions to the solid waste industry and its scientific community.

Scholarships awards are given based on:Academic or professional performance, Relevance of one’s work to the advancement of waste management scienc and the potentiality for success.

Qualifications:
Applications will be considered from those who:

• Will be this year or are now a full-time PhD student or postdoctoral researcher
• Have a clearly demonstrated interest in waste management research.

Amounts awarded take into account the cost of tuition at the recipient’s institution and any other funds received. Full scholarships cannot be awarded to students who will be receiving full-tuition scholarships from other sources (excluding direct university assistance such as tuition remission and/or income received from assistantships), although such students may still be considered for partial awards.Scholarship Range:
