We are happy to invite applications to our new M.A. Program in Hispanic Linguistics from all B.A. graduates interested in Spanish linguistics. The Department offers a Teaching Assistant line to the most outstanding application (the TAship covers tuition and a stipend for the awarded student during two consecutive years). There are also other possibilities for financial support for applicants fitting the relevant criteria. Our MA program lasts four semesters (2 years) and seeks to attract students interested in the study of the different grammatical aspects of Spanish.

As a program, we are not only interested in the standard varieties of Spanish but we are particularly interested in the study of its non-standard dialects, those that emerge, for example, when Spanish as a dominant language enters in contact with indigenous languages, or when the inverse situation occurs, as in the context of the United States, where Spanish is in contact with a language like English, or simply, in a monolingual context as it occurs in many Latino American countries, where a standard variety of Spanish co-exists with non-standard dialects.

Norway : The University of Agder PhD Research Fellow in Social Work, Sociology or Adjoining Subject Areas

The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term appointment as PhD Research Fellow social work, sociology or adjoining subject areas for a period of three years, alternatively four years with 25% of the time assigned to tasks at the faculty’s discretion, at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, Department of Sociology, Social Work and Welfare Studies, located in Kristiansand, Norway.

The successful applicant will work with issues relevant to municipal Child Welfare Services. In the preliminary project design the applicants are asked to discuss the problem at hand with persons involved in relevant child welfare schemes. Europe : Marie Curie ITN PhD Positions on the Theoretical Foundations of Transactional Memory

Nine Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions in five locations (EPFL, TU Berlin, Technion, FORTH, and U Rennes I)
are funded by the European Commission under the Marie Curie Initial Training Network Program (project TransForm).

We address (pre-PhD) researchers aiming at significantly improving their career perspectives from both the public and private sector.

The duration of the appointment is 3 years, with a possibility of extension funded from other sources.

RESEARCH TOPIC

The ESRs will pursue research on the general area of concurrent computing and in particular on the theoretical foundations of transactional memory.

Multicore architectures have come to stay; yet multicore is useless without concurrent programming. The
current parallel programming approach of employing locks is widely considered to be too difficult for any but
a few experts. Transactional Memory (TM) is a new programming paradigm which is considered by many
researchers as the future of parallel programming. To understand properly TM systems as well as be able to
assess them and improve them, a rigorous theoretical study of the approach, its challenges and its benefits is
badly needed.

This is the challenging research goal to be undertaken by the recruited ESRs.

Each recruited ESR will primarily work with one of the academic partners of the project:

ELIGIBILITY

The recruited researchers should be, at the time of selection, in the first four years of their research careers
(measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a
doctorate). Also:

• ESR should not already have a PhD
• ESR should be nationals of a country other than the country of her/his primary academic partner, and
• ESR must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of her/his

primary academic partner for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.

ELIGIBILITY EXAMPLES

Example A:
A researcher has already been working as a researcher in industry for two years since graduating with his/her
first degree in computer science.
S/he would be able to benefit from participation in an ITN as an ESR even without pursuing a PhD degree.

Example B:
A researcher has graduated with his/her MSc degree in computer science in 2007 and would like to start
his/her PhD studies in 2010.
S/he is eligible as an ESR within the ITN as s/he has less than 4 years of research experience and no PhD.

Example C:
A researcher obtained his/her PhD after 3 ½ years.
S/he is not eligible as an ESR within an ITN even though s/he has less than 4 years of research experience.

Europe : Master Scholarship 2010 in Agricutural Development and Management of Natural Resources, AGRIS MUNDUS

The Agris Mundus Masters course is a two-year training programme of 120 ECTS (European Credits Transfer System) in agricutural development and management of natural resources.

The Agris Mundus Masters course objectives are to train students to cope with the current global/international concerns in agriculture and rural development. Graduates will be qualified to identify and critically analyse key factors shaping the development of crops, forests and animall production, the management of research and rural development projects and finally, the sustainable use of natural resources and the environment. They will be trained to formulate and provide effective and appropriate responses to complex agriculture and natural resources related issues.

As the result of the selection of the Agris Mundus Master course by the Erasmus Mundus programme, the European Commission provides a number of scholarships. In accordance with the rules of this programme, each of the training tracks involves one year (M1) in one institution, and one year (M2) in a second institution, the two of them being delivered in two different countries of the European Union.

Study Scholarships

15-30 scholarships are usually offered each year to the Agris Mundus master course by the Erasmus Mundus Programme of the European Union.

NEW! From 2010, there will be two categories of grants for both European and non european students.

Eligibility criteria for category A grants

• a) to be a citizen of a third-country : all countries other than the 27 States of the European Union and the associated states [Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway], Turkey, Switzerland, Albania, Bosnie-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Former Yugoslavia, Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia;
• b) not residing in any UE Member State or participating country;
• c) to have not carried out his/her main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months the last five years in any of the UE Member States or participating countries, at the date of the application.

Eligibility criteria for category B grants

These grants can be awarded to students selected by the Agris Mundus consortium and those who do not fulfil the category A criteria defined above.

Selection

The academic admission is confirmed and the specific criteria are observed.
The Agris Mundus consortium and the European Commission select who receives an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

The European students who are academically admitted but who are not selected for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship, may however, be awarded with one of the following support grants:

1. Erasmus mobility grant: 100-200 Eur. per month dedicated to the second year of studies. European students attending Agris Mundus course are entitled to an additional Erasmus mobility grant, even if they already received an Erasmus mobility grant in their previous studies. This grant has to be asked from the country where you start your first year of the Agris Mundus studies. It could be of useful complement to help you in the mobility scheme of the programme.
2. Grant from the Conseil Regional Languedoc Roussillon: 400 Eur. per month. The local authority Languedoc Roussillon supports the Agris Mundus students during their stay in Montpellier.

Other Scholarships

Students who are admitted but who do not benefit of an Erasmus Mundus scholarship are en-couraged to seek for other sources of financial support. For this purpose, the secretariat can send them an estimate of the cost of the studies.

Arrival in Europe, how things are going on?

1. The Erasmus Mundus scholarships are managed by the Agris Mundus secretariat. Beneficiaries are required to order themselves their flight ticket from their home country.
2. The studies office manager of the first hosting country will help you to open a personal bank account. Then, you will receive a lump sum of 1,500 Eur. representing a part of the scholarship. The remaining one will be transferred regularly to your bank account.

Sweden : PhD Studentship in Hydrology: Geohydrological Modelling, Uppsala University

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

PhD student position in hydrology with specialization in geohydrological modelling

at the Department of Earth Sciences, Program of Air, Water and Landscape Sciences.

Storage of carbon dioxide in deep geological formations is a promising technology for reduction of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. However, successful implementation will require a thorough understanding of CO2 spreading and the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical processes at the various geological settings under consideration. Furthermore, to build confidence in this technology, any potential risks must be well understood.

This important research will focus on development of new models and methods to understand the migration and fate of CO2 in the subsurface. Topics include but are not limited to: assessment of migration behaviour and trapping mechanisms in heterogeneous systems, potential leakage pathways to shallow aquifers and the ground surface, effects of leakage and strategies for monitoring of storage sites. Both numerical modelling and experimental methods will be employed. The PhD student will work in a research team including both senior and younger faculty members as well as several PhD students. She/He will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers within the large scale integrating EU FP7 project MUSTANG coordinated by Uppsala University, as well as with other international collaborators at e.g. Colorado School of Mines and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA.

The successful applicant shall have an academic degree in hydrology/geohydrology or a corresponding degree in civil and environmental engineering or geosciences. Solid background in mathematics and physics/chemistry as well as basic familiarity with computer modelling is a requirement. Earlier experience in one of the following is an advantage; programming, numerical methods, Field/laboratory experiments. The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as teaching and administrative tasks can be included up to 20%. Research studies at PhD-student level normally comprise 4 years. The first year can be financed by a research stipend before employment as a PhD student occurs. In order to be registered as PhD student, the applicant must meet the criteria which are deemed essential for successful completion of the PhD-student research and study programme. France : Marie Curie Ph. D fellowship on Photonic Components for Telecommunication Applications at Alcatel-Thales III-V Lab

Alcatel Thales III-V Lab is a new private R&D organisation jointly established by Alcatel and Thales on 1st July 2004, under the French “Economic Interest Group” (GIE) status. Relying on the teams and equipment coming from “Alcatel CIT Research and Innovation” on one hand, and from “Thales Research and Technology” on the other hand, it concentrates in a single entity the most advanced industrial research skills in the field of III-V semiconductors in Europe. Its staff amounts to approximately 100 people, most of them being highly qualified recognised experts.

The purpose of Alcatel Thales III-V Lab is to perform research and development on components, from basic research to development, taking advantage of the synergies between the technologies developed for various markets addressed by Thales and Alcatel, such as telecom, space, defence and security. The streamlining of the research work performed within the Group, allows to strengthen the efforts above the critical mass and to increase the added value through the existing synergies.

III-V Lab is developing silicon photonics together with its partners such as CEA LETI for applications on low-cost photonic integrated circuits for telecommunication applications. Belgium : Master of Human Settlements at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, VLIR-UOS Scholarship 2010

This intensive programme of advanced education is a two-semester degree, starting in September. It leads to the degree of Master of Human Settlements.

This intensive programme focuses on issues of housing, building and spatial planning in a context of development under scarce resources and pressing social and environmental constraints. The programme has the following main components:

• a core package of compulsory courses dealing with human settlements in development, developmental and managerial aspects of sustainable development, design projects, study tours and thesis;
• a pool of courses out of which to choose minimum 10 credits, focusing on subjects as Architecture and Urban Studies, Rational Design and Construction or Urbanism and Strategic Planning
• further optional courses to select from a wide offer. In addition to the regular faculty, an international visiting staff supports the programme.

A specific research-oriented trajectory can serve as a pre-doctoral track for the Ph.D. A trajectory that focuses on urban design, landscape and spatial planning, on the other hand, may lead to admission to the third semester of the Master of Urbanism and Strategic Planning degree, which is a four-semester degree. Please note that VLIR scholarships are only available for the Master of Human Settlements, not for the possible continuation in the Master of Urbanism and Strategic Planning.

Admission requirements

Master programme: applicants must hold a degree of Bachelor or Master of Architecture or Architectural Engineering (with a minimum of five years academic study). Other applicants must have a proven interest and experience in the field of Human Settlements. Job experience is preferred. Among other selection criteria, an excellent academic record is essential, as well as fluent English and a letter of motivation.

e8 Scholarship Programme 2010

Established in 2001 to support outstanding students in advanced studies of sustainable energy development , the e8 Scholarship Programme offers two-year scholarships to Masters and Post-Doctoral students.

What is the purpose of the e8 scholarship?
The purpose of the e8 scholarship is to support outstanding students pursuing advanced studies in sustainable energy development and to encourage meaningful contributions to the collective body of knowledge about this subject.

The e8 considers an outstanding student to be one

• who graduates with excellent grades in the top 20% of her/his class
• who is determined to advance her/his knowledge and understanding
• who has a history of community involvement
• who is committed to sustainable energy
• who is committed to return and contribute to her/his home country

Who is eligible?
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must

• plan to undertake studies at the Masters level or Post-Doctoral level in areas directly related to sustainable energy development
• be citizens of the developing countries and territories identified for OECD official development aid in the DAC List of ODA Recipients effective as of 2006

What are the levels of financial assistance and the duration of the scholarships?
Scholarships of US$ 23,000 per year for up to two years are offered for Masters level students. Scholarships of US$ 30,000 per year for up to two years are offered for Post-Doctoral students. Up to two Post-Doc and ten Masters scholarships will be awarded annually.

e) letter of acceptance from an approved academic institution to undertake studies in sustainable energy development;

• If this application is for the second year of a two-year programme, please include a certificate of enrolment and your results for the first year.

Please include :

• an academic reference from a person who can discuss your academic and/or professional competence
• the Curriculum Vitae of your supervisor

g) personal reference, it must be dated and come from a person (not family member) who can discuss other personal qualities or interest that make you specially qualified to receive the scholarship.

h) proof of citizenship. Refer to the eligibility section above for country eligibility

i) Research Plan (Post-Doctoral Applicants only)
Clearly and concisely, describe the research relating to sustainable energy development that you intend to pursue. Use a maximum of 2,000 words (excluding the Abstract). You may use additional pages for figures and references. Your statement should demonstrate your understanding of the research principles necessary to pursue your objectives. Present your plan with clear hypotheses or questions to be addressed in the research and include:

• abstract;
• principle objectives;
• background information (broader research or other activities of which the research would be a part);
• data sources;
• methodology or approach;
• expected results;
• significance or application of results to sustainable energy development.

If you have not yet formulated a plan of research, your statement should include:

• abstract;
• description of two or three research questions related to sustainable energy development and any link to your previous research;
• analysis of how you think these questions may best be answered;
• description of your methodology and data sources

Key Dates
Applications for the Post-Doctoral programme must be received by the e8 General Secretariat by December 4, 2009. Applications for the Masters programme must be received by March 19, 2010.

How are applications judged?
An Academic Panel consisting of accomplished representatives from Europe, North America and Japan will review the applications. All selections are final and all applicants will be notified.

How will I receive the funds?
Awards will be directly deposited (in US$) into the accounts of the Institution where you are enrolled and provided to you on a regular basis as long as you are making satisfactory progress toward achieving your academic or research requirements.

What are my obligations to the e8 if I am selected?
You are expected to complete your degree or your research, update e8 about your progress and publish your results. You are required to acknowledge the e8 support when publishing or making presentations on your research and results. We may ask you to present your results at an e8 function, in which case your out of pocket expenses incurred to make the presentation will be covered by the e8.

USA : Postdoc Position in Analysis of Streaming Data at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

he Center for Applied Scientific Computing at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to perform advanced research and development in the area of scientific data mining, specifically analysis of streaming data.

Essential duties include:

• Conduct independent research and development in one or more areas of computer science of interest to CASC, such as: signal processing, machine learning; data mining, and statistics.
• Document research and development progress via technical reports, journal publications, and conference presentations.
• Develop software to evaluate novel computational techniques.
• Interact with scientists from DOE programs to help address their computational needs.

Essential skills, knowledge, and abilities include:

• Recent Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
• Research experience in signal processing, data mining, statistics, or a related field.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct high quality research and to develop implementations to evaluate the results.
• Advanced programming skills in C++ and Python.
• Experience with statistical techniques and data analysis methods.
• Experience implementing and evaluating novel computational techniques and publishing the results.
