Job description
The general aim of this project is to gain a better understanding of contact and friction behavior of rough surfaces with (sub-)micron scale asperities.

The friction force to slide a body relative to another is the product of true contact area between asperities and friction stress. The true contact evolves during the plastic deformation of the asperities, which takes place even under light loading. The friction stress is the outcome of the competition between loss of adhesion between asperities and plastic shearing of asperities. The aim of rough surface modeling is to predict the evolution of the area of contact during loading, the contact pressure and residual stresses as well as friction stress.

There is increasing experimental evidence to suggest that classical theories do not accurately model rough surface contact. The discrepancy between classical predictions and experimental findings is primarily a consequence of size effects in plasticity. When the size of the contacts is comparable to the dislocation source spacing, the discrete nature of plastic flow cannot be neglected. Therefore this research focuses on the discrete nature of plastic flow by using discrete dislocation plasticity simulations. These simulations will enable us to compute the stress state and the deformation under and in the vicinity of the contacts. Prediction of asperity deformation during flattening is crucial in determining the true contact area as well as the friction stress.

Job description
Modeling of texture change recrystallisation of low-carbon steel sheet
Texture control in steel sheet manufacturing has been particularly for ulta-low carbon grades ( e.g. IF-steels) for deep drawing applications. In spite of such a remarkable suuess in terms of product development there are still crucial knowledge gaps with respect to our understanding of the development of recrystallisation textures in low-carbon steels. As yet a satisfactory recrystallisation texture model which can provide reasonable predictions of texture related material properties (such as anisotropy of strength or formability) remains unavailable. It is aimed in the present project to develop a more accurate and physically based recrystallisation model by incorporating the recent progress that has been achieved in crystal plasticity models that are used for simulating the deformaion textures of rolled sheet. Such a model will allow providing a more reliable basis for product development of steel sheets with texure dependent properties.

Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
The position is open to candidates who recently obtained a M.Sc. degree in Materials engineering, Applied Physics or Mechanical engineering. Candidates who are familar with quantitative texture analysis and who demonstrate basic acquaintance with the fundamentals of crystal plasticity theory are favoured.
