The Studentship

The studentship is for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory progress and provides payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus an annual stipend of £14, 275 (please note that students from outside the EU are required to pay the difference between International and EU fees, currently this would amount to £6,100 per annum). Successful candidates are expected to undertake up to 6 hours of academic support activity per week.

The topic

"Microbial contamination of contact lenses and associated clinical factors"

Contact lens wear is a significant risk factor for the development of acute bacterial eye infections (microbial keratitis). The healthy non-lens wearing ocular surface is frequently exposed to potentially pathogenic microorganisms, yet infections rarely arise. The presence of a foreign object however, such as a contact lens, impairs host defence mechanisms allowing relatively small bacterial inocula to initiate infections. The contact lens surface allows the bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus to form a structure known as a biofilm (a population of bacteria cells within a secreted matrix called extracellular polymeric substance). It is recognised that a bacterial population replicating within a biofilm differs greatly from a free-floating counterpart. Bacteria within a biofilm are physiologically heterogeneous, gene expression and protein synthesis are altered, and the cells become increasingly refractory to antibiotic therapy. This study will investigate the association of contact lens wear and biofilm formation with S. aureus keratitis.

The successful applicant will be able to combine lab-based in vitro studies within a well-resourced and experienced research team engaged in the investigation of staphylococcal biofilms within the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences with relevant clinical research involving in vivo assessments of contact lenses and the human cornea within the Eye Clinic at GCU.

Project description

The project will explore the role of learning and motivation on visual attention and social cognition in healthy humans. Recent work from Prof Raymond's lab has shown that learned reward/punishment value associated with complex stimuli (e.g., faces) changes the way information is attended, perceived, remembered, and emotionally evaluated. The project will explore these effects in more detail with a specific emphasis on how reward and expectation modulate visual processing mechanisms in the brain. The project will involve EEG/ERP, behavioural approaches (chronometry and psychophysics) and/or fMRI, depending on the student's interests. Avenues for exploration include cognitive genetic phenotyping, addiction, and manipulation of emotional states.

Requirements

Applicants must have a first or upper second-class honours degree in Psychology or equivalent and we would normally expect applicants to have completed an appropriate Masters degree. International students are welcome to apply. However, our studentships only cover fees at the UK / EU level. UK : Research Studentship UK Airspace Regulation In an Era of Privatisation and Commercialisation

Loughborough University - Department of Civil and Building Engineering

The Transport Studies Group within the Department of Civil and Building Engineering at Loughborough University invites applications from highly capable and enthusiastic individuals who wish to study for a PhD in the area of UK airspace regulation. The unprecedented and recurrent closure of UK and much of northern European airspace, in the spring of 2010 following the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland, demonstrated the economic importance of airspace and highlighted the legal and geopolitical complexities involved in its regulation. The UK was particularly affected by the closure. Hundreds of flights were grounded or delayed, thousands of passengers had their travel plans disrupted, and airlines, airport operators, and tourist authorities reported multi-million pound losses.

The recriminations that followed the decision to close UK airspace brought issues of (inter)national airspace governance into sharp relief and indicated the scale of disruption any future airspace closures might cause. Though an in-depth empirical investigation into the political, legal, and commercial decisions that informed the UK's response to the volcanic eruption, this research project will investigate the complex interactions that exist between aviation regulators, airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, and air transport consumer groups in the UK and explore the extent to which the progressive privatisation and commercialisation of the UK's aviation infrastructure has changed practices of airspace regulation and governance. Working with Dr Lucy Budd and Professor Stephen Ison, the successful applicant will explore the implications of the current regulatory regime and will seek to help safeguard the future resilience of the UK airspace network by enabling stakeholders to better prepare for, and respond to, future disruption.

Funding and Eligibility

The studentship is for three years and cover fees and a tax-exempt stipend (£13,590 for the 20010/11 academic year with cost of living adjustments in years 2 and 3). Tuition fees will be paid at the UK/EU rate. Candidates from countries outside of the EU will be liable for the difference between ‘home student fees' and international student fees. UK : PhD Studentship: Nonlinear Signal Processing And Modelling In Diabetes And The Metabolic Syndrome

Project description:

There are currently over 200 million people worldwide, and 2 million people in the UK alone, affected by diabetes. Overall, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes and related diseases, such as obesity and cardiovascular disease is rising at an alarming rate, worldwide, prompting the WHO to refer to this as an epidemic. Model systems that can be manipulated and studied at a functional and/or physiological level will help to develop a better understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment of these conditions. The aim of this research is therefore to investigate the application of a range of nonlinear systems modelling techniques to a variety of physiological data sets from a number of clinical and other studies. This will include such data as blood-glucose, lipid and cholesterol levels, vascular flow measurements, insulin/glucose sensitivity tests, age, gender and lifestyle profiling along with the identification of candidate modelling strategies together with analysis of their predictive capabilities. This project, in conjunction with the School of Medicine, would suit a talented numerate graduate able to work alongside clinicians, scientists and engineers in all stages of the study.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the UK. Physics and engineering are key skills required for solving many of the problems associated with cardiovascular disease. From greater understanding of disease processes through data analysis and computer modelling, to the development of diagnostic and therapeutic devices and assistive technologies, physics and engineering play a major role.

The Cardiovascular Physics and Engineering Group has a significant international reputation in this area. With expertise ranging from advanced biomedical signal processing and image analysis to device development, we offer along with our collaborators in Medical Physics and Cardiology a stimulating environment in which important clinical cardiovascular problems can be addressed.

For this PhD studentship we are looking for an outstanding candidate with good physics/engineering background who is highly motivated to undertake a challenging research project linking electrocardiography and imaging to provide diagnostic information on heart dynamics. UK : PhD Studentship Mechanical Strain of Keratinocyte Stem Cells and Regulation of Stem Cell Migration

Keratinocyte stem cells regulate epidermal homoeostasis. Wounding stimulates them to exit their niche, proliferate and participate in wound closure. Recent data showed that keratinocyte stem cells are also activated in hyperproliferative psoriatic epidermis and psoriasis may be provoked by mechanical trauma to skin (Koebner phenomenon). The signalling mechanisms involved in activating keratinocyte stem cells to migrate out of their niche and proliferate are not well characterised.

Keratinocytes are able to sense mechanical strain and transform it into biochemical signals. Mechanical signal transduction implies an intact cytoskeleton as well as cell-cell and cell-matrix contacts. The literature on mechanical signalling in keratinocytes is based on results using differentiated keratinocytes whereas the response of keratinocyte stem cells has not yet been studied. Studies involving other types of stem cells support the hypothesis that mechanical load regulates self-renewal, lineage commitment and migration of stem cells. The aim of the project is to test the hypothesis that mechanical stress regulates KSC function in a 3D context, relevant to wound healing.

The interdisciplinary research project involves biomedical and biophysical sciences.

PhD Studentships University of Glasgow - Department of Economics

The Department of Economics, University of Glasgow invites applications for two fully funded PhD studentships (UK/EU/International fees and bursary) for doctoral research.

Applications are sought from exceptionally well-qualified individuals in the area of macroeconomics. Topics of particular interest are: the interaction of monetary and fiscal policy, the application of numerical techniques for solving quantitative problems in macroeconomic policy design and the impact of commitment and discretion in policy outcomes. Applicants will have a Masters degree in economics or have excellent technical qualifications in areas such as mathematics, statistics or related fields.

  • The successful PhD students can expect to be supervised by Professor Charles Nolan. The studentships will be available for study beginning in September 2010 for a threeyear period on a full-time basis.
  • Professor Charles Nolan: was educated at the University of Strathclyde and Birkbeck College, University of London. He worked for eight years as an economist at the Bank of England. He has formerly taught at University of Reading, University of Durham, and University of St Andrews. He is a member of the European Monetary Forum. His research interests are quantitative general equilibrium macroeconomics and monetary theory, international finance and business cycle analysis. He has several publications in highly regarded journals, including Econometrica, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking and Economic Journal.
  • Postgraduate research: All postgraduate research students are provided with dedicated office space and a PC. Students have the opportunity to present their work at a PhD workshop series and to attend the Department's research seminars, which showcase invited speakers from the UK and Europe. Students benefit from research methods courses offered by the Faculty of Law, Business and Social Sciences and may, where appropriate, attend relevant MSc courses. RAE 2008 places the Department of Economics at Glasgow joint 11th in the UK and top in Scotland on the basis of GPA and research income and ranks all research as being of international quality: 75% is considered to be world-leading and internationally excellent.

An international fee waiver studentship is available at the Department of Physics (in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry) at the University of Hull in the area of molecular spintronics. This cross-disciplinary research is expected to focus on the incorporation and electrical measurement of organic molecules within nanosized/atomic scale magnetic junctions. The research will have a broad remit and involve aspects of nanotechnology, organic electronics, micro-fluidics, polymer physics/synthesis, self-assembly and electrochemistry. Candidates will preferably have excellent experimental skills and/or a strong willingness to learn device fabrication and low temperature measurement techniques and will be a highly motivated, well-organized and creative individual, capable of working with minimal supervision when required. The work will involve cross-departmental, national and international collaborations.

UK : PhD Studentship Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Legume-based Systems Scottish Agricultural College

It is well established that legume crops could play a key role in sustainable cropping systems. They contribute more to the farming system than simply the harvested part: they fix atmospheric nitrogen into forms available for plant metabolism, they break the cycles of diseases that attack the major cereal crops, and they can replace other food, feed, fibre and fuel crop products that are imported from other continents. Nevertheless, they are under-represented in European agriculture, and this research aims to remedy this situation. The consequences of growing a range of legume crops will be systematically quantified agronomically, ecologically and economically in order that an optimum usage of legumes can be defined for each of the major European agricultural zones. The basis of the PhD will be to understand and extrapolate to an EU scale using dynamic and deterministic modelling techniques that measure greenhouse gas emissions from legume rotations.

This postgraduate position is for three years, with a proposed start date of September 2010, ending September 2013.

The successful candidate must have or expect to obtain a minimum of an upper second class degree in a scientific discipline from a UK University or equivalent. They should ideally have demonstrated ability in using biological models, statistical techniques, an understanding of soil processes, and be familiar with computer software and data handling packages. Oral and writing skills in English are required to a high standard. A clean and valid European driving license is desirable.

UK : PhD Studentship Alcohol use in middle aged adults

University of Worcester - Institute of Health and Society

Applications are invited for a fully-funded full-time studentship on alcohol use in middle aged and older adults.

Although the level of alcohol abuse in the middle/old aged population has been estimated there is little evidence on the attitudes of such a group towards alcohol, drinking and the potential public health messages. In response to this increased prevalence, interventions aimed at changing drinking behaviour have been developed although these have been rather parsimonious in their approach and reach.

The purpose of this cross sectional study is to examine alcohol consumption in middle and late adulthood. Specifically to establish: a) level of consumption of alcohol in the target populations; b) to explore views and attitudes towards drinking in both middle aged and older adults; c) to explore any potential differences between rural and urban areas for both levels of consumption and views and attitudes regarding drinking alcohol and d) develop, deliver and evaluate potential public health interventions for such a population.

This PhD studentship is being supported by both the University of Worcester and the Worcester Public Health Directorate.

The student will carry out a research project that will, on successful completion, lead to the award of a higher research degree (PhD). The student will be expected to carry out their individual research study under the direction of Dr Penney Upton, Director of Studies along with colleagues from the University and the local Public Health Directorate.

Applicants should preferably have a good first degree in Health, Psychology or related discipline although applicants from other subject disciplines may be considered. Excellent oral and written English are a must, as are a commitment and enthusiastic approach to completing a higher research degree. The Masters course (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering is based in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. This course will provide training in advanced topics in Mechanical Engineering and was developed in response to the decision of Engineers Ireland that a Master's degree in an engineering discipline will be the minimum educational standard for Chartered Engineer status for students graduating in 2013.

The main aim of the programme is to equip graduates with a detailed knowledge of advanced methods in mechanical engineering, including theoretical foundations, computational and experimental methods and engineering applications.

PROGRAMME OF STUDY

The programme spans a single academic year (three semesters) and requires full time attendance on campus. For the first two semesters students will study a mandatory set of core subjects and a suite of optional advanced subjects (electives). Students will engage in a research project over all three semesters with submission of a research project (thesis) at the end of semester 3. This MSc programme provides academic and practical training for Engineers and Scientists with a special interest in management of water and the environment. The course is delivered by academics from Bristol's renowned Department of Civil Engineering, and leading practitioners from industry.

The main aim of the WEM programme is to provide graduates with a sound knowledge and fundamental understanding of integrated water and environmental management. This includes considering the relationships between human activity and the environment, and quantifying the impacts of human activities, and the technical and socio-economic approaches for preventing and controlling adverse environmental impacts.

The course is particularly suitable for graduates who wish to pursue a career in the Water Industry, Environmental Management, or International Development. Past graduates have found employment in consultancies, companies in the pharmaceutical and engineering sectors, environmental regulators, local authorities and other public sector bodies.

The MSc course consists of four core modules, four optional modules for students to select from a broad range of subject areas, and four months' individual research towards a thesis. Modules are taught through lectures, group tutorials, and private study, with field visits, and are assessed through a combination of exams and assignments.

All modules are allocated two weeks of study time: one week for timetabled activity and the other for private study and preparation of assignments. Timetabled activities are available to be taken as short-courses to meet CPD requirements.

Entrance requirements

A minimum of a second-class Honours degree, or an international equivalent, in an engineering or science subject. Other qualifications or relevant professional experience will also be considered. Applicants whose first language is not English normally require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 92, or equivalent.

Several PhD research positions are currently open in the Computational Nanomechanics Group at the University of Pittsburgh for the following research projects:

EPSRC PhD scholarship for a home (i.e. UK) student to work with Prof. Wen Wang in School of Engineering and Materials Science and his colleagues at Williams Harvey Research Institute in Queen Mary, University of London on ‘Targeted delivery and release of selective matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors in designated diseased tissues’

Details: Many tissues in our body produce enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases. These enzymes are required for the normal functions of the tissues, but when produced in excessive quantities, they can cause damage to the tissues, leading to diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer and arthritis. This project will develop novel ways for nanoencapsulation, delivery and site specific release of MMP inhibitors that can dampen the enzymatic activity specifically to diseased tissues. It can be used to improve the efficacy and minimize adverse effects of such agents for treatment of the diseases mentioned above.

The Masters program is custom-designed by leading practitioners and academics from a range of disciplines from four leading universities in Australia.

Students are trained to integrate various disciplines, such as environment, politics, law, science, culture, engineering, economics, health and society through project-centred approach.

USA: Ford Motor Company International Fellowship Of The 92Nd Street Y

The 2011 Ford Motor Company International Fellowship of the 92nd Street Y is now accepting applications from community leaders who are citizens and residents of Brazil, India, Indonesia, Israel, Turkey, Ukraine, and Venezuela. Applications must be postmarked, faxed, or emailed by June 30, 2010 to be considered.

This annual fellowship is funded by the Ford Motor Company and organized by the 92nd Street Y to provide education and support to community leaders engaged in the nonprofit sector. To date, 210 individuals from 57 countries have received the Ford Fellowship, which is now in its eleventh year.

A successful applicant must demonstrate that he or she:

  • is a community leader engaged in the nonprofit sector, either professionally or as a volunteer;
  • is successfully addressing issues that affect the community’s well-being; and
  • would benefit from an intensive three-week nonprofit management training course in New York .

The residency takes place June 2-June 22, 2011 in New York City. Airfare, accommodation, food, transportation, instruction, and other program-related expenses are included in the fellowship, and participants receive a small stipend upon arrival.

During the intensive three-week residency, Ford Fellows take classes in areas including nonprofit management strategy and leadership at Columbia University ’s Picker Center for Executive Education. The academic curriculum is complemented by visits to model nonprofits in New York City and meetings with academic, business, and government leaders. The experience is enhanced by Fellows’ residency at the 92nd Street Y, a Jewish community and cultural center founded in 1874 that annually serves over 300,000 people of all national, ethnic, religious, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Cyprus: 16 MBA or MPSM Scholarships from CyprusAid Scholarships Scheme

The Republic of Cyprus is offering up to a total of sixteen (16) full scholarships of 12-months duration to study for the attainment of the Master in Business Administration (MBA) or Master in Public Sector Management (MPSM) title for the academic year 2010-2011.

The Universities taking part in the scheme are: the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM), the European University Cyprus (EUC), the University of Cyprus (UCY) and the University of Nicosia (UNIC). Each University will receive up to four (4) students who will attend the above study programme as official scholarship holders from the Republic of Cyprus. Eligible candidates are citizens of the list of scholarship recipient countries for the academic year 2010-2011, as per the distribution shown below:

Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM)

Application procedure

In order to submit an application for scholarship, the applicant must fill-in the relevant application form for the respective University programme. Along with the University application each candidate must attain an official endorsement by her/his country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs using the Endorsement Form (detailed instructions on the endorsement procedure are included in the document).

The applicant may then submit his/her application along with the endorsement form at a Competent Consular Authority of the Republic of Cyprus of their choice, not later than the deadline shown above for each University.

In order to expedite the process, it is strongly recommended that the applicant forwards a copy of the application form and a copy of the duly completed and stamped endorsement form to the Academic Institute organizing the program, as soon as he/she attains these documents.

The originals should be submitted or sent to the Competent Consular Authority of the Republic of Cyprus, before the deadline (as instructed above). It is noted that ONLY applications accompanied by duly completed and stamped endorsement forms (by the applicant΄s Ministry of Foreign Affairs) will be considered for a scholarship award. Candidates from Armenia should obtain an endorsement of their application through the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia.

Important notes concerning the award of scholarships:

  1. Candidates who have received a scholarship of either short or long duration by the Republic of Cyprus within the last two (2) years 2008 or 2009 are NOT eligible to apply for these scholarships.
  2. Eligible candidates must be permanent residents of their country of citizenship.
  3. All scholarships are offered officially by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus to other Governments on a bilateral basis as official technical assistance and not to individuals. Therefore, it is expected that with the end of the scholarship, the scholarship recipients will return to their country of citizenship so that the recipient country is benefited to the highest possible degree by the transfer of know-how and not just the individual receiving the scholarshsip.
  4. For the scholarship to be awarded it is necessary for the candidate to accept the Terms and Conditions of the scholarship.

Germany: Heinrich Boll Stiftung Scholarship for UnderGraduate and PhD Students

Heinrich Boll Stiftung promote those studying and graduating who have a positive attitude towards the goals of the Green project, share the fundamental ideals of the Heinrich Böll Foundation – democracy, ecology, solidarity and non-violence – and who take an active socio-political role.

Eligibility & Guiding Principles
In accordance with the guidelines of the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) as well as the Foreign Office (AA), scholarships are awarded by the Scholarship Department to German and foreign students.

Students
The following requirements apply to German citizens, EU citizens and students who have gained their university entrance qualifications from a German school:

  1. The maintenance scholarships which are awarded to German citizens, EU citizens and students who have gained their university entrance qualifications from a German school will be calculated on the same basis as BAföG, depending on your parent’s income and/or your own income and personal assets. Irrespective of this, an independent book grant of 80 € per month will be awarded to all successful applicants.
  2. You must be enrolled at a state-recognized university or college (e.g. Fachhochschule) in Germany at the time the scholarship payments begin. The foundation also grants scholarships for Master degree courses in other EU countries.
  3. Earliest application date: if you intend to enrol for a Bachelor or Masters degree, for a Diploma, Magister or State Examination, you can apply for a scholarship before your studies begin, but the earliest date for receiving payment will be the beginning of the first semester. We advise you to make your application in time for the start of your studies.
  4. Latest application date: within the prescribed maximum period of study you should still have at least four semesters before your final examinations, so that the foundation can support you for at least three semesters.

The following requirements apply to foreign applicants (except EU citizens) who wish to study in Germany:

  1. You must be enrolled at a state-recognized university or college (e.g. Fachhochschule) in Germany at the time the scholarship payments begin.
  2. You should provide proof that you have already graduated with an initial professional qualification. This programme mainly supports students aiming for a Masters degree.
  3. You need a good knowledge of German, and we kindly ask you to provide proof of your proficiency. Please note that the selection workshop (interviews, group discussions) will normally be in German. Exceptions (interview in English) are, however, possible.
  4. Unfortunately, the current guidelines specify that we can not support foreign scholarship holders for stays abroad in third countries for more than four weeks.

Doctoral Studies (PhD)
The following requirements apply to German applicants, applicants from other EU countries and PhD-students who have gained their university entrance qualifications from a German school:

  1. Approval: applicants for a PhD-scholarship must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent from an officially accredited institution of higher education in Germany or abroad. Furthermore, they must have been accepted as a doctoral student by an institution of higher education in Germany or in another EU country.
  2. Duration of funding: normally, the scholarship will be awarded for the period of two years, plus a maximum extension of two half years, if applicable.

The following requirements apply to PhD-students from outside the EU:

  1. Approval: applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent and must have been accepted as a doctoral student by a German institution of higher education.

Denmark: 19 PhD Scholarships at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen

The Graduate School of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for 19 PhD scholarships starting 1 February 2011 for a period of up to three years.

Application Procedure
Applicants need to hold a two-year Master's degree (120 ECTS) or the equivalent, or expect to receive such by 31 January 2011. Applicants shall have submitted their thesis at the time of application, to the extent the thesis forms part of their Master's programme.

Applicants with a non-Danish Master's degree will have their degree assessed by The Danish Agency for International Education to establish, if the Master's degree is equivalent to a Danish Master's degree. More information about The Danish Agency for International Education is available here

Employment as a PhD student occurs pursuant to the applicable rules of the Faculty of Humanities, as well as between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Under this agreement, the PhD student is obliged - without further remuneration - to carry out allotted work to an extent corresponding to a total of 840 working hours in the case of a three-year contract.

The PhD student will be working at the same department of the faculty as the supervisor. Daily presence at the department is expected.

IFUW International Fellowships and Grants 2011/2012

The International Federation of University Women (IFUW) offers a limited number of international fellowships and grants to women graduates for postgraduate research, study and training. IFUW's 2011/2012 competition is now open. The fellowships and grants offered are for research, study and training to be carried out between 1 April 2011 to 31 December 2012.

Who can apply?

  • IFUW fellowships and grants are open only to women graduates who are members of IFUW's national federations and associations and to IFUW Independent Members.
  • Students in any branch of learning may apply.
  • Fellowships are offered for the second and subsequent years of a doctoral programme and for post-doctoral studies. First year doctoral students do not qualify.
  • Grants are offered for any postgraduate programme.
  • The awards may be used in any country other than the one in which the applicant was educated or habitually resides.

Deadline

  • Members of IFUW's national federations and associations must apply through their national headquarters. The deadline varies by country, but normally falls beween August and mid-September 2010. Please ask your national headquarters for the exact deadline.
  • IFUW Independent Members must apply through IFUW Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The deadline is 1 October 2010.

Switzerland: 2 PhD Positions in Statistics/Econometrics at University of Neuchatel

The Institute of Statistics of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Neuchâtel expects to open up to two assistant positions (for a total of up to 150% working time) starting in August 2010. The successful candidates are expected to enroll in and begin working towards a Ph. D. degree in Statistics at the University of Neuchâtel. The possible topics of the thesis cover theoretical and/or empirical methods in statistics and econometrics related to the areas of expertise of the department.

The Faculty of Economics of the University of Neuchâtel, has around 400 students, over 30 full professors and guest teachers, 20 lecturers, and about 30 teaching and research assistants.

The Institute of Statistics, one of the seven institutes that constitute the Faculty, gives bachelor and graduate courses included in the university degree programs in economics, mathematics, management, social sciences, labor psychology, and informatics. Moreover, the Institute of Statistics offers a master program in statistics. The research interests of the faculty include sampling, estimation in finite populations, public statistics, extreme values, time series, statistical methods applied to finance and macroeconomics.

Ideally located at the heart of Europe (halfway between Zürich and Geneva), Neuchâtel offers its residents an exceptional quality of life and is an ideal place for study and high-level research work.

Qualifications and Assessment Grounds for Appointment
The applicants should

  • have a Bachelor and Master degrees in statistics, mathematics (with some knowledge of economics), economics or finance (with a strong mathematical background), or related fields,
  • be willing to start working on a Ph. D. thesis in the fields of statistics or econometrics at the University of Neuchâtel,
  • poses a high level of independence, intellectual openness, creativity and scientific curiosity,
  • be interested in doing research, be motivated to study, understand and finally master possibly complicated technical problems, be willing to neatly write up the results,
  • poses strong quantitative skills, good knowledge of probability and statistics/econometrics,
  • be interested in teaching and willing to perform to a high level in the didactic duties,
  • have good knowledge of both French and English,

Job Description
The assistants will be employed on a fixed-term contract and will be active in the Institute of Statistics, University of Neuchâtel for the full duration of this position

The successful candidate is expected to conduct research towards the completion of a Ph. D. Thesis. They will function as a teaching assistant for bachelor and master level courses and expected to interact with the students and to assist them in their learning effort. The teaching is both in French and English.

The assistant will also play an active role in the department. She/he is expected to interact with other researchers in the school, to participate in department's activities, to contribute to the scientific life of the department by attending seminars, conferences, taking part in organizing of scientific events, supervising undergraduate/graduate theses within her/his research area, etc.

The position offers also the possibility for close academic collaboration with the other institutes and departments of the university (in particular with the Institutes of financial analysis, information management, and economic research, and the department of mathematics), as well as relevant departments of the Universities of Geneva and Lausanne (these last ones in the frame of the collaboration agreement “Triangle d'Azur”).

Salary And Benefits
The successful candidates will receive benefits and salary in accordance to the rules and regulations of the University of Neuchâtel

Rough and non-binding estimates of the salary for 100% employment go from a gross salary of around CHF 68,000 (€ 48,000)/year in the first year to roughly CHF 79,000 (€ 56,000)/year in the fourth year.
