An established MRes programme in the first year will train and enhance laboratory skills and scientific understanding. More details at: http://www.mds.bham.ac.uk/mcm Students will have the opportunity to select from a wide supervisor pool to undertake two varying twelve-week projects over the course of their first year. PhD projects will be developed through interaction and discussion with supervisors to ensure the optimum balance between student and supervisor strengths.

The studentships are available for admission in October 2010 and are open to all Home/EU and overseas students. A starting stipend of approximately £18,685 per annum will be provided. Tuition fees will be paid at the Home/EU rate.

UK : Wellcome PhD Studentship Historical Influences on Psychiatric Diagnosis

King's College London - Centre for the Humanities and Health

The Centre for the Humanities and Health at King’s College London has been created with the help of a £2 million Strategic Award from the Wellcome Trust and offers unparalleled opportunities to develop a wide ranging interdisciplinary interface between health sciences and the humanities. The Centre invites applications for a PhD Studentship commencing in 2010. This studentship offers an opportunity to work within the Historical Influences on Psychiatric Diagnosis strand of research. This project is led by Edgar Jones, Professor of the History of Medicine and Psychiatry in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the Institute of Psychiatry. The candidate will register for a PhD research degree in the History of Psychiatry.

The Award

The studentship is funded full-time for 3 years and may be held full-time or part-time, though not beyond the end of 2013. The award covers Home/EU postgraduate fees of £4,600 per year, and includes a stipend of c.£21,000 per annum (tax free), plus an annual travel allowance for attending conferences.

Although the award only covers Home/EU fees, applicants from outside the UK/EU are also invited to apply for the studentship on the understanding that the difference in cost of tuition fee is payable by the candidate. The tuition fee for full-time international postgraduates is currently £14,100 per year.

A PhD studentship in the area of Open innovation is offered jointly by CBR (www.cbr.cam.ac.uk), UKIRC (www.ukirc.ac.uk), and Judge Business School (www.jbs.cam.ac.uk) to candidates with an excellent first degree, and with a Research Masters degree by September 2010, who wish to advance their academic, or professional, career. Awards are open to UK/EU/International students.

Research Areas: Open Innovation

You will have an interest in gaining a better understanding of the nature of open innovation. This project will seek to explore the antecedents, processes and consequences of firm’s adoption of open innovation strategy and practices. For instance, how do we explain the variance of firm’s behaviour in adopting OI practices in the UK? How does OI practice effect firm’s innovativeness? And how does the use of open innovation affect internal organization design and IP strategy? The person appointed will become an active, contributing member and colleague in the group and apply rigorous social science methods, build on theoretical insights and collaborate closely with industry to produce high quality research.
