UK : PhD Studentship

False performance: unethical behaviour in performance evaluation and work relationships

University of Worcester - Centre for People at Work

Worcester Business School

Applications are invited for a fully-funded, full-time, three year studentship to undertake research examining false performance as an unethical behaviour in varied work settings across differing levels of organisations. False performers or organisational charlatans are individuals who seek to improve their perceived performance at the expense of their actual performance. Such individuals would attempt to disguise their behaviour to obtain positive advantages from the organisation via their superiors in terms of performance evaluation, work performance and general positive image which is often beyond their actual delivery.

The specific aim of the research will be to investigate (a) the extent to which this behaviour is widespread, (b) produce an instrument to measure it and (c) assess the potential challenges it poses for performance evaluation and other work relationships.

The student will carry out a research project that will lead to the award of a higher research degree (MPhil/PhD) and will be expected to conceptualise and research an individual study under the direction of Dr. Gbola Gbadamosi.

Detailed information about the Worcester Business School and the Centre for People at Work can be found at:
http://www.worc.ac.uk/departments/655.html
http://www.worc.ac.uk/departments/1022.html.

Applicants must possess at least an upper second class honours degree in Business or relevant area of Applied Psychology. An MA or MSc. qualification will be advantageous.

The successful applicant will receive a tax free bursary of £12,300 per annum plus an expenses budget. Fees will be paid in full at the UK/EU rate for home and EU citizens. Overseas students are welcome to apply but will need to fund the balance of fees for Overseas Research Students.

UK : PhD Studentship Sustainability and Sport

University of Central Lancashire - School of Sports, Tourism and the Outdoors

The Greening of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012

Reference No RS/08/23

Applications are invited for a full-time studentship available in the School of Sports, Tourism and the Outdoors. The studentship is tenable for up to 3 years for the MPhil/PhD (subject to satisfactory progress). The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees at UK/EU rates plus a stipend (currently £13,290 for 2009/10) per annum. International applicants may apply but will be required to pay the difference between UK/EU and international fees. The successful applicant will start on 1st January 2010.

Project outline:

In 1996 the Olympic Charter was amended and sustainable development became one of the fundamental objectives of the Olympic Movement. In 1999 the International Olympic Commission adopted its own version of ‘Agenda 21' (the action plan that followed the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992) with three core goals of: moving socio-economic conditions, conservation and management of resources, and strengthening the role of women, young people and indigenous populations. Despite adopting respect for the environment as a core part of its mission there are continuing debates about exactly how this can be achieved. With London staging the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2012 a critical investigation of Olympic host initiatives to date and those being undertaken by the London organisers in light of the IOC Agenda 21 is timely. Sociological theoretical and methodological approaches to the environment underpin this PhD, however applicants with other relevant degrees (e.g. ecology, geography, sociology of sport) may also apply.

Candidates should write a brief proposal (1000 words) to explain how they interpret the research topic and how they would research it and submit it with their application.

Prospective candidates will have a very good Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant social science subject (especially sociology/ sociology of sport).

Informal queries about the project may be directed to Professor John Horne (+44 1772 894235, or email jdhorne@uclan.ac.uk ).

Requests for an application pack (quoting the reference number RS/08/23) should be directed to the Graduate Research Office. Tel +44 (0)1772 895082 or e-mail researchdegrees@uclan.ac.uk .

Note: Previous applicants need not apply.

Provisional Interview Date: 16 November 2009

Real Time Model Adaptation for Non-Stationary Systems

University of Reading - School of Systems Engineering

Full-time, fixed-term for 3 years

Description

The research aims to investigate new approaches of on-line modelling for the non-stationary data sets, which are commonly generated in many systems including Radar, Sonar, communications, instrumentation, seismic exploration, speech processing and recognition, etc. This topic falls into the general area of "non-stationary signal processing" and particularly addresses the challenges that signals are to be extracted from non-stationary, spatially and temporally correlated noise, which also relates to the issue of "low size, weight and power". As a very important topic in the area of signal processing, this project focuses on not only theory but also practical implementation.

This project, together with other 18 projects in several leading UK universities, are co-funded by the EPSRC and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) aiming to investigate the current challenges in signal processing. There will be an annual conference every year organized by the Dstl for publishing/sharing results, which will provide very good chances for the researcher to communicate with other colleagues in this area.

The project will start in 2 January 2010, but can be extended to a later time depending on the application. For more information, please contact Dr. Alex Y. Gong at y.gong@reading.ac.uk.

UK : PhD Studentship in Models for Engineering Change

Design Group, DDEM

Open University - Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology

Many engineered products are designed by modification from previous products. Further, designs change frequently through the design process. This PhD will investigate the role that past products and their descriptions, as well as the emerging properties of the current design, play in making engineering changes. The ways that different models of products and processes are used during engineering change processes will be identified through empirical studies. In particular the project will analyse the information that models convey as well as how designers perceive these models and their roles. The research will develop guidelines for effective use of models during engineering change.

You will have a keen interest in design and industrial practice with excellent people skills. A relevant degree at 2(1) or 1 level is essential and an interest in the philosophy and psychology of design would be an advantage.

The PhD is available immediately and will run for three years. Potential applicants should contact Claudia Eckert (c.m.eckert@open.ac.uk) or Chris Earl (c.f.earl@open.ac.uk) for informal discussions or enquiries.

Belgium : PhD Positions on Soil Organic Matter Dynamics and GHG Fluxes at Université Catholique de Louvain

3 PhD positions are available within the project « Soil organic matter dynamics and GHG fluxes in relation to landscape scale processes: linking process understanding to regional scale carbon mass-balances ». This is a collaborative project (2009-2014) between the Department of Geography (B. van Wesemael and K. Van Oost) and the Department of environmental sciences and land use planning (S. Lambot, M. Vanclooster and P. Bogaert) at the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium. The positions involve a 4 year PhD program and are available from September 2009. They will remain open until suitable candidates are found. Applications should include the names and addresses of three referees.

For further information on the research groups go to our websites (www.uclouvain.be/geo and http://www.uclouvain.be/mila.html)

PhD1: Characterization and modeling of emergent spatial variability in soil organic matter storage and key soil properties at the regional scale.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic PhD-researcher to develop and integrate remote sensing, geomorphological and soil analysis techniques to monitor and model the spatial and temporal variability of soil carbon pools at large spatial scales. A key area of interest will be the linkages between lateral fluxes of C in relation with sediment transport and the spatial variation in carbon storage at multiple spatial scales. The measurements include radioisotopes for erosion rates and airborne imaging spectroscopy for high resolution/full coverage sampling at larger spatial scales. The Phd will be responsible for helping to coordinate the field campaign in Belgium and will lead the data analysis, modelling and preparation of publications. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic physical geographer, earth scientist or engineer. A commitment to field-based research is essential. For information and application contact Kristof Van Oost (kristof.vanoost@uclouvain.be) or Bas van Wesemael (Bas.vanwesemael@uclouvain.be) or go to our website

PhD2: Characterizing and modeling soil carbon dynamics from the laboratory to the hillslope scale using advanced hydrogeophysical methods.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic PhD-researcher to characterize and model soil carbon response at the local and hillslope scales in terms of soil physical attributes (soil moisture, temperature). The characterization at the local scale will be based on detailed and controlled column experiments in the laboratory, which will be subject to different hydro-thermal regimes. Laboratory and hillslope scale characterization will be based on advanced hydrogeophysical techniques such as GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar), EMI (Electromagnetic induction), ERT (Electrical Resistivity Tomography), FDR (Frequency Domain Reflectometry)and near surface thermometry. Collected data will be processed with advanced geophysical inversion and data mining tools. Data will allow to calibrate/validate a hillslope scale physically based model of C pool response. The Phd will be responsible for the execution of the experimental and modeling program and publish the obtained results jointly with members of the project team. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic earth scientist or engineer (geophysisist, agricultural and environmental engineer, civil engineer, etc.). A commitment to experimental and modeling work is essential. For information and application contact Marnik Vanclooster(marnik.vanclooster@uclouvain.be) or Sebastien Lambot (sebastien.lambot@uclouvain.be)

Ph.D. 3 : Coupling the lateral fluxes of sediments, carbon and water along the hillslope : towards a characterization of the spatial pattern of CO2

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Ph.D. researcher to model the distribution of sediment, water, carbon and energy fluxes along the hillslope since the hillslope is often an elementary unit in large scale terrestrial ecosystem models. As these masses and energy fluxes are closely coupled, they induce structured spatial and temporal patterns with non negligible attached uncertainties. A key area of interest will be the characterization of these linkages and uncertainties in order to obtain a reliable model at the hillslope level, with possible extensions at the regional level. The Ph.D. will lead the statistical/physical data analysis and modeling ; he/she will also be responsible for the preparation of publications. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic physicist, civil/environmental engineer, bioengineer or equivalent diploma. Sound knowledge in physical and statistical modeling for environmental sciences is a clear benefit. For information and application contact Patrick Bogaert (patrick.bogaert@uclouvain.be).

UK : PhD Studentship Applications 2010

Fish Biology

The Fisheries Society of the British Isles (FSBI) offers up to two competitively awarded MPhil/PhD studentships annually. FSBI Studentship awards are based on PhDs funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (www.nerc.ac.uk) and cover the costs of the stipend (NERC rates plus £1000, London weighting of £2000) and of the annual registration fees (at EU citizen rates), with a small annual contribution (£1,250) towards project expenses. Research projects are proposed by the candidate and may be in any field of study relevant to fish biology and the aims of the Fisheries Society, as stated in the Journal of Fish Biology. This includes projects in which fish are the study species as well as those that examine the influence of non-fish taxa on fish biology, e.g. the effects of infectious agents on fish health, of fish-eating birds on fish populations, of invasive crayfish on fish behaviour. However, the focus of the research must be fish biology, and the FSBI reserves the right to decide on the suitability of proposed research topics for its awards.

Applicants should hold a Bachelor's degree, with first or upper second class Honours, in a subject relevant to fish biology, normally in the biological sciences. An alternative combination of qualifications and experience that clearly demonstrates equivalent knowledge and ability may be considered at the discretion of the FSBI Studentship Committee.

Applicants should develop the proposal in consultation with the proposed supervisor(s), one of which must hold an academic position at any institution of higher education in the British Isles (including the Republic of Ireland). However, the application form and project proposal MUST be written and completed by the APPLICANT, not by the proposed supervisor(s). Applicants may hold any nationality, but FSBI Studentships are fixed at rates applicable to UK/EU citizens, and any registration fees above the base rate (currently about £3,750 per annum) must be justified in the application. The FSBI Studentship Committee will consider applications from non-UK/EU applicants, but the FSBI will cover the fees at the UK/EU rate only, so the application must include proof in the application that the financial means are available to cover the additional registration fees charged to non-UK/EU citizens.

The closing date for applications is 15th January 2010. Selected applicants will be interviewed in mid-February.

For further details and a downloadable application form, please refer to the FSBI's studentship webpage http://www.fsbi.org.uk/studentships.htm. Please note that applications are limited to one per applicant.

Informal queries about the application submission process may be addressed to Rosemary Taylor (grants@fsbi.org.uk), with subject-related queries directed to the Committee Chair, Dr. Rob Britton (rbritton@bournemouth.ac.uk).

Belgium : EC-JRC PhD Position 2009 on Neutron Induced Fission of Minor Actinides

Reference number: Cat. 20.3 D05-NP

The Neutron Physics Unit of JRC-IRMM operates a 150 MeV electron linear accelerator serving as strong white neutron source for high-resolution neutron time-of-flight measurements and a 7 MV van de Graaff accelerator for production of quasi-monoenergetic neutrons. The Unit offers advanced and comprehensive training in nuclear physics and engineering through cross-disciplinary research based on neutron physics applications. Minor actinides (Cm and Am) are important isotopes in waste transmutation and Generation IV advanced reactor systems.

In order to be able to model burn up scenarios and calculate the impact on the waste handling one needs to know the fission fragment mass and total kinetic energy distributions of those minor actinides. Hence, the program foresees to measure those fission fragment properties using an ionisation chamber and digital acquisition electronics. Also fission cross section measurements are planned.
