Iceland: Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Engineering at University Of Iceland

Project Supervisor: Dr. Hrund Ó. Andradóttir

The successful candidate will work on a brand new research project characterizing the physical mechanisms within one of Iceland´s largest and deepest lakes, Lake Lagarfljót. As a sub-arctic lake, the weather forcing differs significantly from better studied lakes at lower latitudes. Processes such as stratification, internal seiching, differential heating and cooling and river density currents will be explored using both analytical and numerical methods. The successful candidate will also conduct field experiments in close collaboration with other Icelandic research institutes.

This work is highly relevant to accurately assess the impacts of global warming and human activities (such as damming) on aquatic environments. The project builds a fundamental knowledge base of lakes physical responses to weather conditions which can be used to predict the fate and transport of materials and the chemical composition of water.

Qualifications and skills: A Masters degree in Engineering, Physics, Oceanography, or related fields. Applicants are expected to have a strong background in mathematics, probability and statistics, numerical methods and modelling. Knowledge of hydrodynamics, programming skills and experience with field and/or laboratory work is advantageous but not required.

How to apply: Applicants should (e)mail

  • a 1-2 p statement of interest,
  • a detailed curriculum vitae,
  • certified transcripts of university degrees,
  • contact details (name, position, telephone number and E-mail address) of two referees,
  • (non-native English speakers) evidence of mastery of English (IELTS or TOEFL scores)
