ี๊UK: PhD Studentship

"Identifying the basis of the resistance of ocular motor neurons to degeneration in Motor Neuron Disease"

(Full Time, 3 years)

Ref: PCMD/GS0006R

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.

As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).

This studentship is available to investigate the selective sparing of ocular motor neurons in the progression of motor neuron disease and the possible involvement of calcium-binding proteins. The project will involve live cell fluorescent imaging of cell lines and primary neurons to visualise changes in calcium levels and caspase activation. Biochemical and molecular biology techniques will be used to probe the function of calcium-binding proteins in more detail.

Start date: 5 January 2010

For an informal discussion, please contact: Dr John Chilton on 01752 437414 or email john.chilton@pms.ac.uk although applications must be made in accordance with the details shown below.
