Real Time Model Adaptation for Non-Stationary Systems

Description
The research aims to investigate new approaches of on-line modelling for the non-stationary data sets, which are commonly generated in many systems including Radar, Sonar, communications, instrumentation, seismic exploration, speech processing and recognition, etc. This topic falls into the general area of "non-stationary signal processing" and particularly addresses the challenges that signals are to be extracted from non-stationary, spatially and temporally correlated noise, which also relates to the issue of "low size, weight and power". As a very important topic in the area of signal processing, this project focuses on not only theory but also practical implementation.
This project, together with other 18 projects in several leading UK universities, are co-funded by the EPSRC and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) aiming to investigate the current challenges in signal processing. There will be an annual conference every year organized by the Dstl for publishing/sharing results, which will provide very good chances for the researcher to communicate with other colleagues in this area.

Applicant's Profile
We require a highly motivated PhD student with undergraduate/MSc qualifications involving signal processing and/or communications. Strong mathematical skills in statistics and linear algebra are essential for this post. Knowledge in the following topics would be useful: sensor network, control theory, coding, programming in Matlab and C.
Funding
Funded by EPSRC and DSTL, the studentship covers both academic fees (UK/EU home fee) and full living subsistence for three years. Applicants from outside UK/EU are also welcome, though the applicant is expected to top up the tuition fee from the UK/EU home fee, which effectively means an equivalent deduction in the living subsistence.
