Ireland :1 PhD Assistantship Nineteenth-century French Literature & Culture

The Department of French Studies at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick is pleased to announce that 3 assistantships are currently available: two for Masters by Research in French and one for a PhD in French. Successful candidates will have their fees (€4,315 per year) paid for the normal duration of their programme of studies (max. 2 years for a MA, 3 years for a PhD) and will be awarded, for each year, a sum of €6,900 in return for undergraduate teaching to a maximum of six tutorial hours per week in semesters 1 and 2 (maximum 130 hours in total).

To be considered for these assistantships, applicants may apply at any time during the course of the academic year 2009-2010, but a first review of the applications received will take place mid-December 2009. It is expected that successful candidates will be able to register no later than three months after the date when their fully completed application forms were received. However, successful candidates applying after mid-May will not be able to register before 1st September of the same calendar year.

This award is open to Irish, other EU Students and non-EU students alike.

MA students will work whether under the supervision of Mr Darach Sanfey (18th-century topics) or Dr Loïc Guyon (19th-century topics). The PhD student will work under the supervision of Dr Loïc Guyon.

  • a good primary degree (normally a first or 2.1) in a relevant subject area (for the MA) or a good MA in a relevant subject area (for the PhD)*;

UK : DPhil (PhD) In Characterisation Of The Function Of The BRCA1 And 53BP1- Related Checkpoint Protein Crb2

University of Sussex - Genome Damage and Stability Centre

Crb2 is closely related to the mammalian DNA integrity checkpoint protein 53BP1 (p53-binding protein). It is also related to BRCA1, mutations in which are responsible for a high proportion of familial breast and ovarian cancers. Crb2, 53BP1 and BRCA1 all contain BRCT domains at their C-termini. Many of the cancer-causing mutations in BRCA1 map to the BRCT domains, testifying to their importance in maintainence in genetic integrity. In collaboration with a structural biology group we have initiated a structure/function analysis of the BRCT domains of Crb2 (Kilkenney et al., 2008). The aim of this studentship is to extend these studies to identify the extent of the interactions involving the BRCT domains of Crb2. It is anticipated that information gained on the function of these domains will have important implications for understanding the role of BRCT domains in medically important human proteins. Techniques involved in the proejct will include cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, DNA sequencing, genetics, analysis of DNA damage responses and analysis of protein-protein interactions

Our lab is located in the dynamic research environment of the Genome Damage and Stability Centre at Sussex. Students are exposed to a wide variety of research topics associated with DNA damage responses, cancer and other genetic disorders.

Development and evaluation of novel interpolymer complexes for oral insulin delivery (REF IHW4)

This project will investigate the ability of novel interpolymer complexes to entrap and deliver insulin via the oral route. These formulations should provide both protection against degradation in the gastro-intestinal tract and facilitate passage of insulin across it into the systemic circulation. The work will provide a clear understanding of the effect of altering formulation variables on insulin entrapment/release and delivery system cell interaction. This will facilitate rational formulation design to produce effective insulin oral delivery. This project will give the applicant experience in multidisciplinary fields, including: polymer science, physical chemistry, drug delivery and formulation, and cell culture. Techniques which will be used include: spray drying, cell transport studies, scanning electron microscopy, bioadhesion testing and differential scanning calorimetry. Would suit candidate with background in Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The role of metal ions in biology and medicine is well recognised. In particular, Zinc, Selenium, Manganese, Iron and Copper ions have been implicated in many metabolic disease states. Recently Manganese, Zinc and Selenium metal complexes have been shown to exhibit good antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties. In this project, novel metal complexes will be synthesised and their biological activity will be fully investigated. Due to the multidisciplinary feature of this project, the student will be exposed to organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, cell and molecular biology and biochemistry. Admission Policy

Policy Statement

1.1 The Institute of Cancer Research is committed to providing high quality research training, and, in line with its equal opportunities statement, The ICR welcomes applications from suitably qualified candidates, irrespective of their background, of race, colour, ethnic or national origin, religion, political belief or affiliation, socio-economic group, family responsibility, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.

1.2 Decisions about offering a place are made on the basis of:

  • Existing or predicted qualifications and grades (individual projects may require a qualification in a specific subject area)
  • Academic references
  • The candidates application form and in particular the personal statement
  • Interview
  • For research degrees, the projects available

1.3 The ICR considers each application on its individual merit and disabled applicants are considered using the same admissions criteria as all other applicants. The ICR is keen to address the issues which, whether real or perceived, may deter a disabled applicant from applying for a place on the taught postgraduate course or research studentship in a laboratory-based environment and, to this end, The ICR has appointed a Disability and Diversity Advisor, who provides support service for prospective and existing students.

1.4 The ICR’s Academic Regulations set out the general criteria for admission to the ICR as follows:

“… In order to be admitted to The Institute of Cancer Research a student must normally:

be at least 17 years of age, subject to waiver in exceptional circumstances;

  • Satisfy the general entrance requirements of the University of London;
  • Satisfy any additional programme-specific entry requirements, for example registration with the General Medical Council
  • Demonstrate a standard of proficiency in an approved English Language test as specified in the Programme Regulations for each programme;
  • Comply with the enrolment procedures laid down by the ICR.

Decisions on admission are taken in good faith by the ICR on the basis that the information given by the applicant is accurate and correct. If it is subsequently discovered that information given is untrue or inaccurate the ICR may refuse admission or, if the student has enrolled, terminate the student’s registration…”

1.5 Any applicant wishing to make a complaint about the admissions procedure or process may do so in writing to the Registrar of the ICR.

2. Admissions Procedure: Full-time PhD Students

2.1 The recruitment process will normally commence in September/October and should include, where possible, all studentships funded by sources other than the ICR/Royal Marsden.

2.2 Potential projects must be vetted according to the ICR’s procedure for approval of studentships and which will cover review of academic, financial and supervisory arrangements for the duration of the project.

2.3 Studentships will be advertised in October as part of the ICR’s annual recruitment process. The advert must be approved by the Academic Dean or his/her Representative. Studentships are normally advertised in the scientific press, relevant websites, the ICR’s website and via to university departments with high RAE rankings, running relevant undergraduate/masters degree courses. Studentships in very specialised areas may also be advertised via relevant subject-specific email list.

2.4 All applications must be submitted using the on-line application by the advertised deadline. Complete applications will be initially screened against the criteria, as outlined in 1.2/3.1, to ensure applicants meet or are likely to be able to meet the required minimum standards. All the applications are then made available via a web-interface to the Dean’s Team and supervisors of the projects who will rank the applications.

2.5 Successful applicants will be invited to a recruitment event in January/February. The Registry will normally pay reasonable travel expenditure but not first class travel.

2.6 All interviewees will undergo assessment, and be scored by a panel which will comprise a minimum of three staff acting on behalf of the ICR. Those meeting the minimum requirement on the assessment will then be interviewed by the prospective supervisors.

2.7 Before any offer is made, the supervisors and Dean’s Team will meet to agree all offers. Successful candidates will be contacted by email from the Registry and informally offered a place.

2.8 When a candidate has confirmed their acceptance of the informal offer, a formal written offer will be issued. The offer letter will state the terms and conditions that need to be met. All offers will be subject to medical clearance and, where appropriate, the award of degree with the required classification.

2.9 Should a candidate decline the offer, the supervisors of the project may offer to a reserve candidate. If there is no reserve candidate, the supervisors of the project may re-advertise the project with the approval of the Academic Dean’s Team. Any candidates invited for interview are required to be interviewed by a minimum of the project supervisor and a member of the Dean’s Team. The interview should follow the format of the recruitment event as closely as possible.

2.10 In exceptional circumstances (including 2.9 above) supervisors may be allowed to advertise outside of the event as long as they are able to justify this to the Academic Dean’s Team. The supervisor will be required to submit a short written case. This could be where a studentship has not been filled as part of the recruitment event or if a Section receives funding for a studentship which they did not have at the time of the initial advertising round. Studentships can only be advertised outside of the main ICR recruitment event if approved by the Academic Dean’s Team. The studentship must be advertised externally and as a minimum on the ICR’s website. All interviews must follow the format of the recruitment event as closely as possible.

3. Qualifications for Entry: Full-time PhD Students

3.1 Applicants should normally possess or expect to obtain EITHER:

a degree in a relevant subject at upper second class honours or above OR:

a Masters degree in a relevant subject OR:

an overseas qualification of equivalent standard to the above.

4. Overseas Candidates

4.1 Candidates whose first language is not English must be able to demonstrate a proficiency in English to the equivalent of:

TOEFL score of 650 (written paper) or 280 (computer based) or 114, (Internet based) or an IELTS score of 7.0.

The ICR offers training to candidates for whom English is not a first language. It may be possible to make a conditional offer to candidates whose TOEFL / IELTS score is less than the minimum, subject to further study and re-examination.

4.2 Overseas candidates may not be eligible to be considered for projects funded by Research Councils, due to restrictions placed by the Research Councils. However, all ICR-funded studentships are open to candidates irrespective of nationality, subject to meeting the minimum entrance criteria.

5. Admissions Procedure: Part-time PhD Students (non-clinical)

5.1 Candidates should be employees of The Institute of Cancer Research or the Royal Marsden NHS Trust and should have been in post for a minimum of one calendar year. Registration will not be backdated.

5.2 Candidates must recognise that the work for which they are primarily employed takes precedence over their studies for MPhil or PhD. It is likely that some of this work will provide material for the thesis, but it must be accepted that there may be a change of direction of research within a Section, or even redeployment to another Section.

5.3 Candidates should submit a 300 word summary of the project, together with a completed Supervisor Form to the Deputy Dean (Biomedical Sciences). They should also include a letter of support from the Section Chair that confirms the candidate’s suitability for a research degree, that the facilities required are available and that the proposed study will not compromise the work of the Section or Team. The Section Chair must also guarantee a specified amount of study time for the candidate, agreed with the Deputy Dean [Biomedical Sciences]. Before registration is approved, the prospective supervisor and student must agree a work timetable. For research students, a minimum of 40% of normal work time must be available to contribute to the thesis for the plan to be deemed viable. This assumes that the student will contribute an additional effort equivalent to 10% FTE in their own time.

6. Qualifications for Entry: Part-time PhD Students

6.1 Candidates should normally possess a degree in a relevant discipline at second class honours or above, or equivalent.

6.2 Where the candidate possesses an award at lower second class honours, the candidate will be required to produce an extended Year 2 report of Master’s degree standard.

7. Admissions Procedure : MD(Res) Students

7.1 Candidates are required to complete the ICR’s Application Form and a protocol outline which should then be discussed with their supervisor. The supervisor must complete the Supervisors form. The proposed project must be authorised by the relevant ICR Section Chair, who is confirming the feasibility of the proposal and that adequate resources will be available for the duration of the project. Once all forms are complete and signed the candidate should make an appointment to discuss their proposed research project with the Deputy Dean (Clinical Studies) or Senior Tutor.

7.2 Before registration is approved, the prospective supervisor and student must agree a work timetable. For MD(Res) students, the ICR Code of Practice stipulates “the normal expectation is that the maximum time which may be spent on routine clinical service work during normal working hours is one session per week (this excludes sessions where the majority of the student’s time is spent in recruiting or monitoring research subjects). It is expected that Students will contribute a minimum additional effort equivalent to 10% FTE in their own time. These students will be subject to the same monitoring as full-time students.

In exceptional circumstances this can be negotiated with the Deputy Dean (Clinical) and Senior Tutor. However a minimum of 4 sessions must be protected for research. Where this is the case it is expected that Students will contribute a minimum additional effort equivalent to 10% FTE in their own time.

Students required to provide clinical service cover during normal working hours may do so for a maximum of two weeks per annum for full-time students and the pro rata equivalent for part-time students.

8. Qualifications for Entry: MD(Res) Students

All are registered as part-time students.

8.1 To be eligible for registration for the MD(Res) degree, a candidate must either:

(a) have obtained the MB BS degrees of the University of London or some other registerable primary qualification in Medicine and be eligible for full registration or hold limited registration with the General Medical Council; or

(b) have obtained the BDS degree of the University of London and/or be eligible for registration with the General Dental Council.

9. Admissions Procedure: Clinical Fellows (Clinical PhD Students)

9.1 Candidates are required to complete the ICR’s Registration Form and a protocol outline which should then be discussed with their supervisor. The supervisor must complete the Supervisors form. Once all forms are complete and signed they should be returned to the Registry with confirmation of three years’ funding and written confirmation from their Section Chair that their project is feasible. The Deputy Dean (Biomedical Sciences) will check and approve applications.

9.2 All students are registered initially for MPhil, with transfer of registration to PhD following a successful progress report and internal transfer viva. All are registered as part-time students.

9.3 Before registration is approved, the prospective supervisor and student must agree a work timetable. For Clinical Training Fellows, the ICR Code of Practice stipulates that: “the maximum time which may be spent on routine clinical service work during normal working hours is one session per week (this excludes sessions where the majority of the student’s time is spent in recruiting or monitoring research subjects.)”

10. Qualifications for Entry: Clinical Fellows (Clinical PhD Students)

10.1 To be eligible for registration for the degree of MPhil candidates should normally possess or expect to possess either the MB BS degrees of the University of London or some other registerable primary qualification in Medicine and be eligible for full registration or hold limited registration with the General Medical Council;

Taught Postgraduate Programmes

11. Admissions Criteria

11.1. The specific qualifications for entry, in addition to the general criteria set out in the ICR’s Academic Regulations, are set out in the programme regulations for each course.

12. Admissions Procedures

12.1 Applications must be made on the ICR’s Application Form. Applications may be made at any time, however there will be a date notified in the prospectus, and to enquirers, by which time no further applications will be considered for entry at the next given intake. An application fee may be charged.

12.2 All applications will be considered in the first instance by the Course Director(s) concerned and at least one other member of academic staff involved in the teaching and delivery of the course in question.

12.3 All applications that the Course Director(s) and other member of academic staff wish to progress will be offered a place, subject to any appropriate conditions. Candidates may be invited to attend an interview prior to a decision being made.

12.4 Any applicant in receipt of an offer of admission who wishes to withdraw before enrolment on the course must notify the Registry in writing of their intention to do so. The ICR reserves the right not to refund the application fee or any other charge paid up until the point of withdrawal.

The following courses are also offered: Data Management; Data Mining, Survey Methods; Computer Intensive Methods; Topics In Biometry, Bayesian Data Analysis; Modelling of Infectious Diseases, Topics in Epidemiology; Bioinformatics; Disease Mapping; Microbial Risk Assessment.

The programme puts strong emphasis on project work and the development of scientific writing skills. Typical projects are: Learning from Data; Discovering Associations; Longitudinal Data Analysis and Advanced Modelling Techniques.

The final part of the programme is a summer project: each student takes part in the ongoing statistical activities at a company, institute, laboratory, etc. The project is assessed on the basis of a scientific report presented orally.

Admission requirements

All applicants should hold a university degree. Applications are primarily expected from candidates with a degree in a maths and/or statistics-oriented discipline.
Graduates from fields like medicine, biology, agriculture and bioengineering may also be admitted, provided they can show good skills in maths and statistics.

Europe : Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship Programme 2010 in International Performance Research (MAIPR): Course Code P-W4PA

Funded by the European Commission, the MA in International Performance Research (MAIPR) Erasmus Mundus programme is offered by three internationally renowned academic institutions: the University of Warwick in the UK; the Universiteit van Amsterdam (the University of Amsterdam) in The Netherlands; and the Tampereen Yliopisto (the University of Tampere) in Finland, the latter in cooperation with Helsingin Yliopisto (the University of Helsinki).

Students study at two of these institutions, and conduct fieldwork and arts research in one or more of these nations. You will spend from the beginning of the course until the December holiday break at your home institution. You then go to your mobility institution, where you will study until the end of June. When you finish your mobility period, you will be expected to complete your studies at your home university.

Students successfully completing the programme will receive a double degree from the two institutions they have attended. Your double degree could therefore be a combination of two out of the three following MA awards: Warwick’s MA in International Performance Research; Amsterdam’s MA Theaterwetenschap; and Tampere’s FM teatterin ja draaman tutkimus.

MAIPR 2010-11 Fees and Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

Fees for MAIPR 2010-11 are in the process of being set.

The course fees will cover a sixteen-month course (beginning September 2010 to end December 2011). Included in the fee are all the tuition costs.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

Erasmus Mundus (EM) Scholarships are funded by the European Commission (EC), under the management of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). EM scholarships are awarded to the strongest applicants to the MAIPR programme itself, in accordance with the rules and regulations set by the EACEA.

EM Scholarship Competition Eligibility: there have been important changes to how the EM scholarships are awarded. European Union citizens and citizens of an European Economic Area/European Free Trade Association (EEA/EFTA) country can now be entered into a separate EM scholarship competition, which has been designed to give them some financial help towards the cost of the MAIPR programme. More information on this change will be uploaded shortly.

EM scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. It is therefore important that your MAIPR application is as strong as possible as competition for the scholarships is very strong. You should also bear in mind that you may be accepted onto the MAIPR programme but not be awarded a scholarship.

EM Scholarship Competition Application: you do not apply separately for an EM scholarship. Recommendations are made by the MAIPR consortium and are based solely on the quality of the application to the MAIPR programme itself.

EM Scholarship Competition 2010-11: As mentioned above, important changes are being made to the EM scholarship competition. We anticipate that, from 2010-11, a limited number of full EM scholarships of 35,600 Euros will be awarded to selected third-country MAIPR students, together with a smaller number of EM scholarships at a smaller financial amount to selected EU/EEA/EFTA students.

It is important to bear in mind that an EM scholarship is aimed at helping towards the payment of all programme costs.

Application process

The best way to apply for the MAIPR programme is to fill in an online application form via the University of Warwick, the coordinating institution for the Consortium. Please click-on the following link on-line application form to access it.

To register your application and gain access to the form, all new applicants must enter a valid email and an easily remembered password. Make sure that you choose the correct course code, P-W4PA.

If you are unable to access the on-line form, you can send in a paper application. You need to request the documentation from the University of Warwick’s Student Recruitment department, via student.recruitment@warwick.ac.uk

All students must apply for the programme through the University of Warwick; you are unable to apply through the University of Amsterdam or the University of Tampere. However, while the application form is geared towards University of Warwick applicants, you are applying to all three partner institutions when you submit the form.
The application for the programme itself must have been submitted on-line or been received by the Warwick Postgraduate Admssions Office by the following dates:

  • For Erasmus Mundus (EM) scholarship applicants: 4TH JANUARY 2010.

Academic interests and purpose of study (Statement of Intent)

As part of the application, you will be asked to provide an Academic interests and purpose of study (also known as a Statement of Intent). You can include it on the application form straight away or send it with the supporting documentation. You are asked to write a 500-word statement which explains why you are interested in being admitted to the programme, why you would be a suitable candidate to join the MAIPR, and to include any exceptional circumstances that will affect your participation in MAIPR. In addition you should include 1) the modality you would like to emphasize in your course of study (see Modalities) and 2) your preference, if you have one, for one partner institution and the reason for your preference.

Note: If selected, you will study at two of the three partner institutions and the consortium will make the assignments based on internal programmatic factors. Where possible, the partners will take your preference into consideration, but may not be able to honour it. All decisions on mobility assignments are final and are non-negotiable.

Assessment Criteria
An admissions committee made up of staff from the three partner institutions will consider your materials using the following criteria:

  • Academic Potential: 60%
  • Motivation: 20%
  • Recommendations: 15%
  • Language Skills: 5%

In addition, all Erasmus Mundus programmes are required to adhere to rulings concerning geographic distribution and gender equity. This is an EACEA directive and therefore out of the control of the University of Warwick.

Application fee

Postgraduate Admissions levy a non-refundable application handling fee for all taught postgraduate courses, including the MAIPR. For an online application it is £20; for a paper application it is £30. YOU MUST PAY THIS FEE. If you do not, your application will not be forwarded to us and therefore it will be rejected. We therefore strongly advise that you pay the fee at the same time as your application, otherwise the Department of Theatre Studies will be unable to consider you for the course. This can be paid on-line by credit or debit card, or through the post by a Banker’s Draft made out to ‘The University of Warwick’.

Japan : UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Scholarships 2010 for Developing Countries Students

UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi (Japan) Co-Sponsored Research Fellowships and Scholarships Programme: 2010 Cycle – With a view to keeping alive and honouring the spirit of former Prime Minister Obuchi and his belief in 'people building the next era', 20 fellowships and scholarships per year, for the ninth year, will be awarded to deserving candidates from UNESCO developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research based on scholarships' aid on one or more of the topics listed below.

The aim of the fellowships and scholarships' aid is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in the areas of development to which former Prime Minister Obuchi was committed and which coincide with areas of particular interest to UNESCO.

The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships and scholarships' Programme funded under a Japan Funds-in-Trust project will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas which were of particular importance to Mr Keizo Obuchi: 1. Environment (with particular attention to Water Sciences); 2. Intercultural Dialogue; 3. Information and Communication Technologies; and 4. Peaceful conflict resolution. No other research topics will be considered.

Eligibility

Applicants for these scholarships, a maximum of two from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria:

  1. Candidates under this Scholarships' Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master’s degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship.
  2. Scholarships' Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return.
  3. Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1970 will not be considered under the Programme.
  4. The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative.
  5. Priority attention will be given to:
    • Women
    • Candidates from least developed countries (LDCs)
    • Palestinian researchers
  6. Candidates of scholarships' recipients must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research.
  7. Applicants must be in good health, both physically and mentally.

France : Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2010: AtoSiM Master Course

AtoSim is a one year Physics or Chemistry Masters degree focused on computer modelling of physical, chemical and biomolecular systems. This one-year degree provides a high-level qualification in the rapidly expanding field of computer modeling in physical, chemical and bio-molecular sciences.

Students obtain a double degree from the two institutions in which they are enrolled. Admission into the master degree is decided on the basis of academic excellence by a selection committee composed of representatives from each partner institution. Applicants should have at least four years of prior studies majoring in physics, chemistry, engineering, applied mathematics or bio-informatics. Proof of English proficiency is also required.

Grants

The European Commission will finance 15 Erasmus Mundus stipends for applicants coming from any third country. Additional funds coming from the Community's external relations budget allow paying for Erasmus Mundus scholarships to additional students coming from specific countries.

The European Commission also imposes the following additional selection criteria, which aims at ensuring a geographical balance across the sponsored third-country students:

  • no more than 25% of the selected third-country students should come from the same country
  • no more than 10% of the selected third-country students should come from the same institution.

Scholar opportunities

The European Commission will provide 3 grants for scholars coming from any third country. Without prejudice to the respect of high academic standards, in order to ensure a geographical balance across third-country scholars, each selected third-country scholar should come from a different country (but they can come from the same countries as students). The amount of the scholarship is 4000 € per month + an fixed amount of 1000 €.

The duration of the visit of the scholar is maximum 3 months. Scholars invited in one institution will be expected to visit informally the two other institutions during their stay in Europe.

Invitation of third country scholars will be made upon proposition of researchers from the three institutions of the ATOSIM consortium. We will be very pleased to receive unsolicited applications, too.

Scholarships for all International Students

The Adelaide Outstanding Achiever Scholarships International (AOASI)

  • Up to nine Adelaide Outstanding Achiever Scholarships International (AOASI) are available to international students from any country undertaking study in any academic discipline except Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS).
  • Benefits are the waiver of full tuition fees for the normal duration of the program, subject to satisfactory performance.
  • A scholarship recipient completing a three year degree program who is offered a further year in the Honours Program may apply for an extension of the scholarship to cover that year.
  • Scholarships are available only for the first four years of a double degree.


Targeted Scholarships

The Adelaide Vietnam Scholarships (AVS)

  • Up to four scholarships will be available to international students who are citizens of Vietnam undertaking study in any academic discipline except Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS).
  • Intending applicants will be assessed on the basis of their Vietnamese High School Graduation Certificate (Bang Tot Nghiep Trung Hoc Pho Thong). Bonus points will not be taken into consideration.

  • Benefits are the waiver of full tuition fees for the normal duration of the program, subject to satisfactory performance.

The scholarship application process will require completion of an online form that will be available on this website until Saturday 31 October 2009.

Applicants will be required to have already received a current unconditional offer of admission to the University of Adelaide to be considered for a scholarship.

Students with a conditional offer of admission must have demonstrated that they meet all the conditions of their offer, and have received acknowledgement from the International Office that their offer is unconditional, before lodging an application for a scholarship.

AOASI, AVS and AMS Scholarship Conditions

Eligibility conditions

  1. Scholarships will be awarded strictly on academic merit and only actual results can be used. Forecast results are not accepted for scholarship selection. Only complete applications will be considered, and only applicants who have met the University’s minimum English language requirement for direct entry to their intended program of study at the scholarship application deadline will be eligible for consideration. For Australian Year 12 students the basic TER will be used. Bonus points will not be counted.
  2. The University reserves the right to vary the awards, or not to offer scholarships if the candidates have not achieved the level of academic achievement to merit the awards.
  3. Applicants from education systems accepted by the University of Adelaide for direct entry to the first year of degree studies must apply before commencement of University studies whether in their home country or Australia. Those who have commenced tertiary studies at the time of application will not be eligible.
  4. Applicants from education systems where one year of degree studies in their home countries is required for admission to the University of Adelaide first year degree studies must apply before commencement of their second year of studies. Those who have commenced second year studies at the time of application will not be eligible.
  5. A scholarship may not be awarded to anyone already holding another scholarship funded by the University of Adelaide.
  6. Citizens and Permanent Residents of Australia, and citizens of New Zealand are ineligible for any of the above scholarships.
  7. Candidates who have applied for Australian permanent resident status are ineligible to apply.

Enrolment Conditions

  1. Scholarship holders must commence study at The University of Adelaide in 2010. By negotiation, an applicant offered a scholarship scheduled to commence in Semester I, 2010 may defer until Semester II, 2010 if there is a Semester II commencement of their chosen program of study. If the applicant is not able to commence in Semester II the scholarship offer will lapse and will not be available to the applicant in 2011.
  2. Candidates are required to enrol in The University of Adelaide as ‘international students’ and must maintain ‘international student’ status for the duration of their enrolment in the University. The scholarship will be terminated if a student changes their residency status.
  3. Scholarship holders are expected to enrol in a full time load. A scholarship holder who is considering reducing his/her enrolment load must first consult with staff in the International Student Centre. International students are expected to complete their programs within the duration specified on their visa. The University may only extend the duration of study under compassionate or compelling circumstances.
  4. Undergraduate scholarships are available for up to four years, subject to satisfactory progress. The University reserves the right to terminate scholarships of students who do not maintain satisfactory progress. Satisfactory progress is defined as the achievement of a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 5 (out of 7).
  5. Where a student fails, or withdraws from courses in a given semester (or equivalent teaching period) such that the semester GPA (Grade Point Average) is less than 5.0 in two consecutive semesters, the student will be deemed to have failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress and the scholarship will be terminated unless the University is satisfied that exceptional circumstances exist.
  6. If a student faces exceptional circumstances requiring him or her to return home, he/she may apply for a one year deferment of enrolment without loss of scholarship, provided this is approved under the student visa requirements.
  7. In order to make a case for exceptional circumstances, a student will need to provide a detailed statement and independent supporting documentation e.g. a doctor’s certificate etc.
  8. If a scholarship holder enrols in more than the standard load of 24 units per year, or in courses which increase the tuition fee beyond what is indicated in the scholarship offer letter, or enrols in courses at another institution, he or she shall be responsible for the payment of the additional tuition fees.
  9. Students who complete a three-year degree may apply for an additional year, in an Honours program, but extension of the scholarship for the fourth year is subject to the decision of the relevant faculty.
  10. The scholarships cover the amount of tuition fee indicated in the scholarship award letter for up to four years of study at the University of Adelaide. The scholarships do not cover the costs of visas, Overseas Student Health Cover, travel, accommodation, living expenses, books and study materials or any other expenses associated with living in Adelaide or study at the University of Adelaide.

Up to 48 scholarships will be available for meritorious diploma holders from the University’s articulation partners in Singapore, China, Vietnam and Malaysia who enrol in Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Computer Science programs at the University of Adelaide.

Benefits are a 30% reduction in tuition fees for the duration of the program, a maximum of two years for the Engineering degrees and one year for a Computer Science degree. Contact the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Science for more information.

The Adelaide Sarawak Alumni Scholarship

The scholarship is provided to support one student per annum who is enrolled in an undergraduate program of study at the University of Adelaide. To be eligible for consideration an applicant must be a Malaysian citizen who is currently enrolled as a full time undergraduate student in their second or subsequent year of study at the University of Adelaide. Applicants must have completed at least one year of study at the University of Adelaide.

The successful applicant will display outstanding academic ability as well as documented demonstrated commitment to community service. Academic merit will be assessed based on applicant’s cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) for the preceding year.
The Scholarship will provide an annual amount of $7,000AUD, payable in two instalments of $3,500AUD direct to the student following confirmation of enrolment at the census dates for a maximum of one year.

The University of Adelaide Law School Scholarship for Malaysian Students

The University of Adelaide Law School Scholarships are available to eligible Malaysian students who are studying the South Australian Matriculation (SAM) program in Malaysia and are seeking entry into a Bachelor of Laws degree in semester 1 of 2010. The Scholarship provides a one-off payment for living allowances.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for consideration a student must:

Applicants should describe how their work would contribute to “sustainability science,” the emerging field of use-inspired research seeking understanding of the interactions between human and environmental systems as well as the application of such knowledge to sustainability challenges relating to advancing development of agriculture, habitation, energy and materials, health and water while conserving the earth’s life support systems. This year we will give some preference to applicants who address the challenges related to meeting human needs for water or food/agriculture/ land use in the context of sustainable development.

In addition to general funds available to support this fellowship offering, special funding for the Giorgio Ruffolo Fellowships in Sustainability Science is available to support citizens of Italy or developing countries who are therefore especially encouraged to apply. The Sustainability Science Program is directed by Professors William Clark and Michael Kremer, and Nancy Dickson.

Czech : South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic: Master and PhD Scholarship 2010-2011 for Foreign University Students

SCHOLARSHIP FOR FOREIGN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Programme Scholarship for foreign students supports foreign students from the third countries out of European Union who want to study at one of the universities in the South Moravian region in the Czech republic, in the Czech study programmes.

What is provided in the programme:

  1. Scholarship (monthly 6000 Czech crown – approx. 220EUR) for the first study year – to cover basic living costs (if students achieves good study results during the first study year, they obtain scholarship straight from the university in the following years). There is no tuition fee for students attending study programs in Czech language.
  2. Free administrative assistance and consultancy – help with university entrance exams procedure and during the first study year in the South Moravian region (diploma recognition, information service, visa, study matters etc.)

Who can apply:

Foreign students from the third countries out of European Union, who wish to study a follow-up master or Ph.D. study programs in Czech language, at partner universities in the South Moravian region of the Czech republic. Preferably in technical and natural science field of study.

How to apply:

Conditions for receiving scholarship:

  1. Submitting the complete application for scholarship and application for study in the given deadlines.

  3. Final choice of scholarship holders makes independent Selection Committee, whose members are the vice-rectors of our partner universities. Selection is done from the group of applicants who have been accepted to the study at the university.

Czech language:

It is expected that the applicants have sufficient knowledge of Czech language to be able to start studying in Czech right after their arrival in Brno.

The applicants who receive scholarship can attend course of Czech language (free of charge) in Brno at the university for the period of the first academic year (13 weeks, 12 lessons weekly), including final exam of Czech language.
From the previous years of the programme:

The scholarship programme for foreign students has started since the academic year 2006/2007, so far there have been supported totally 70 students.

In the academic year there have been supported 14 foreign students. In the following academic year there were 22 scholarship holders of JCMM and at the same time 4 students from Bosnia and Herzegovina attended a project of five-month course of Czech language in Brno in order to continue their study at a local university. In the present academic year 2008/2009 there are 30 scholarship holders, who have been chosen out of 79 applicants.

Europe : Erasmus Mundus MSc Scholarship 2010 in Sustainable Forest and Nature Management

We propose an integrated two-year world-class Masters Course in Sustainable Forest and Nature Management (SUFONAMA). The overall objective is to provide a top-level programme that qualifies graduates to deal with the huge challenges in Europe’s pursuit of an evermore sustainable management of her natural resources, namely, that the management of forests and nature areas must be seen in an integrated landscape context. To obtain the SUFONAMA double degree and the Diploma Supplement, students have to acquire 120 ECTS credits by studying at two Consortium institutions, acquiring at least 60 ECTS credits at each. All SUFONAMA modular activities are completed in English. Due to the one-year Course components, SUFONAMA encourages its student body to engange in local language studies available at all the partner institutions. The total students population is expected to be 150.

The Master Course is organized by a Consortium which involves five institutions:

Non-EU and EU Students

The EM Masters course, SUFONAMA, is open to non-EU and EU students. Every year approx. 17-20 EU scholarships are available.

Category A Scholarships for Third-country nationals: Total 48.000 EUR

Category A scholarships can be awarded to masters students from all countries other than the 27 EU menber states and EEA/EFTA states: Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, the Western Balcan countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, the former Yugoslav Republic of Marcedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, and Turkey. Furthermore, you must not be a resident nor have carried out your main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 moths over the last five years in one of these

Category B Scholarships for European nationals: Total 23.000 EUR

Category B scholarships can be awarded to any masters students who do not fullfil the criteria A defined above.You must study in two of the consortium partner countries.

If you hold an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, these two countries must be different from the country in which you obtained your last university degree.

It is possible to be admitted to the Course, even though you are not awarded a scholarship. You will then have to cover EM SUFONAMA participatory costs. If you finance your study yourself, you are allowed to study in the country of your last university degree.

Germany : 18 PhD fellowships at GSLS, Wuerzburg

Würzburg is one of the leading German Universities in the Life Sciences based on funding by the German Research Foundation (DFG Ranking 2009). Internationally renowned research centres such as the Biocenter, the Research Center for Infectious Diseases, and the DFG Research Center for Experimental Biomedicine (Rudolf Virchow Center) contribute to this standing. Denmark : PhD Scholarship in Globalisation & Int'l Economics, Aarhus University

At the Department of Economics at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, a PhD scholarship will be available from December 1, 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD scholarship is linked to a multidisciplinary research project entitled "Made in Denmark anno 2050 – The role of firms in globalisation", concerning the export success factors of Danish companies. The scholarship is in economics, but part of a larger multidisciplinary research project carried out in collaboration between the GlobID research group at the Department of Economics and the Centre for Design of Global Enterprise (DoGE) at the Department of Management. It is funded by the Tuborg Foundation and the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation.

The PhD student will be placed at the GlobID research group at the Department of Economics at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, and is expected to partake in large-scale data analysis, econometric investigations as well as in writing of academic articles and communication of research results. PhD students in Denmark work under very favourable terms: They are employed on a full-time basis for three years, and the salary is enough to cover all necessary accommodation and living costs and to lead an active life. A PhD student does not pay university fees.

PhD students at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University (ASB), work under almost the same terms as other research staff, i.e. they have their own office space with a computer, incl. Internet access, email, phone etc., as well as access to secretarial assistance etc. Moreover, expenses in connection with the scientific work are covered, e.g. participation in research courses and academic conferences in Denmark and abroad.

There are also good and well-paid job opportunities in Denmark for people with a PhD degree, both within and outside the university sector.

A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. As part of the PhD scholarship the PhD student will be enrolled in the PhD programme comprising a number of courses within the relevant research area.

The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.

Conditions of employment
The PhD scholarship has duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the scholarship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.
