Switzerland : 2 PhD Positions in Soil Environmental Chemistry

Swiss Federal Institute of Technology

We are inviting applications for two PhD student positions in the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics at ETH Zurich. The successful candidates will investigate the physicochemical structure and biogeochemical reactivity of nano-crystalline Fe(III)-(hydr)oxides formed in the presence of natural organic matter. In natural environments, the precipitation of Fe(III)-(hydr)oxides is often influenced by dissolved or particulate organic matter such as humic substances or polysaccharides originating from microorganisms and plants. The structure and reactivity of such Fe(III)-precipitates containing significant amounts of organic carbon are of fundamental importance for understanding many biogeochemical processes, including contaminant behavior, carbon sequestration, weathering and soil formation. One subproject will focus on the molecular and microscopic level characterization of such precipitates and their interactions with trace metals in abiotic systems. In the other subproject we will study their dissolution behavior in abiotic and biotic systems using Shewanella and Geobacter strains, and track speciation changes of trace metals associated with these solids. Both students will apply state-of-the-art analytical techniques, including synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The two sub-projects will be strongly linked and international collaborations are planned.

We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in detailed laboratory research. Previous experience in the fields of mineralogy/crystallography, microbiology, and inorganic chemistry would be beneficial. Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in soil chemistry, environmental geochemistry, mineralogy, microbiology or a related basic science discipline. Good knowledge of spoken and written English is essential. Female and male candidates are equally invited to apply. Employment will be according to standard regulations of ETH Zurich (funding secured for 3 years). Start from March 2010 or upon mutual agreement.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, CV, statement of research interests, copy of certificates, and addresses of 2-3 potential referees to Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar, ETH Zurich, CHN F23.1, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland (paper copy by mail or single pdf-file by e-mail to christian.mikutta@env.ethz.ch). For further details on the project please contact Dr. Christian Mikutta.

Evaluation of applications will start 15.01.2010 until the positions are filled.

Medical informatics is the scientific field that deals with the storage, retrieval, sharing and optimal use of biomedical information, data and knowledge for problem solving and decision making. There is a growing interest among medical researchers and pharmaceutical companies in biomedical informatics, especially in modelling, simulations, gene expression control, clinical databases, probabilistic modelling and machine learning. Medical informatics impacts on all basic and applied fields in biomedical science and is closely tied to modern information technologies, notably in the areas of e-science and bioinformatics. The overall aim of the programme, which is a variant of our successful Bioinformatics MSc, is to cover tools and techniques that will help scientists create and validate models of how knowledge and data are used within biomedicine, and thereby enhance our understanding of biological and biomedicinal processes. Our MSc Medical Informatics programme reflects medical informatics as a truly multidisciplinary field - it is taught by the School of Biosciences, the Peninsula Medical School, the Wellcome Biocatalysis Centre and the ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society (EGENIS). Research projects are undertaken in the Wellcome Biocatalysis Centre or the Peninsula Medical School (Postgraduate Health Institute), or among a range of industrial placements. The course involves research, development and application of computational tools for storing, organising and analysing biological, molecular and medical data, e.g. DNA, protein sequences, SNiPs data, and micro-array data. The programme is split 50:50 between taught modules and a research project.

UK : PhD Studentship: Ultra-fast (TeraHertz) electronic nanodevices

The University of Manchester - School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Closing Date: 17 November 2009

Enquiries: Prospective candidates can contact Professor Aimin M. Song at A.Song@manchester.ac.uk for an informal discussion relating to this opportunity.

Applications: If you wish to apply please email a covering letter, full Curriculum Vitae and the names and contact details of at least two academic referees to Ms Marie B Davies m.b.davies@manchester.ac.uk

The project

3 years duration.

Applications are invited for two PhD studentships, available from Jan 2010, to work in a new EU project on ultra-fast electronic nanodevices, which operate at TeraHerz (1 THz =1,000 GHz) frequencies.

The project will be carried out in the Microelectronics and Nanostructures Group, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The research quality of the School was ranked 2nd in the UK in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008.

The studentships are funded by a new EU project involving 4 partners from Spain, France, Sweden, and UK. Terahertz technology has attracted huge interest due to a very broad range of potential applications, such as security and medical imaging, radio astronomy, and ultra-fast electronics for future computation and communication. However, the THz field is still largely unexploited due to the lack of compact, solid-state, room-temperature emitters and detectors. The Project will address the bottleneck issue by developing solid-state emitters and detectors at THz frequencies using novel device architectures. The work is based on our recent success in demonstration of novel planar nano-diodes at 1.5 THz or 1,500 GHz, the highest speed of electronic nanodevices to date.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a good degree in physics or electronic engineering. Previous studies on semiconductor devices, electronic materials, or microwave engineering would also be an advantage although not necessary.

Funding

Successful applicants will receive up to €70,000 over the 3-year scholarship, which includes fees, living expenses and project costs.

For more details on the funding of this scholarship, please contact Professor Aimin M. Song using the contact details at the top of this advertisement.

UK : PhD Studentship Lead-Free Interconnections for Very Low Temperature Electronic Systems

Loughborough University - Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

Ref: DPW291009

Space, aviation and maritime environments present particularly low temperature harsh operating conditions for electronics under which solder joints have to survive, and provide long term operational integrity. At the same time the majority of the electronics industry has moved to the use of high tin content, lead-free solder alloys. A potential issue in the use of such alloys for prolonged periods of low temperature is so called "tin pest", a phase transformation from β-Sn to α-Sn accompanied by a 26% volume expansion that causes loss of structural strength. Other factors in the transformation are known to be stress, presence of a seed and composition of the alloy. However an understanding of the basic mechanisms of the phenomenon, that would allow a realistic assessment of likely failure rates of lead free solder joints due to tin pest, is lacking.

This study aims at contributing to the required understanding through a systematic investigation of the phenomenon under representative conditions encountered in harsh environments. The research programme is likely to involve:

  • Experimental exploration of long term aging of lead-free, high tin solders, matching the accelerated aging protocols to harsh environments;
  • High resolution electron microscopy (HREM) characterisation of the interphase boundary, and of the ordered and disordered regions;
  • Modelling of the thermodynamic driving forces for phase separation in the tin system.
  • Analysis of the effects on the transformation of the microstructure and morphology of the system.

A PhD Studentship supported by the Innovative electronics Manufacturing Research Centre (IeMRC) and NPL is available to support the research. Subject to satisfactory progression, the Studentship will cover fees at the UK/EU student rate for three years, and in addition will pay a stipend of around £13,290 per annum. For high quality candidates from outside the EU top-up funding to cover the higher rate of student fees may be available. Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a first or upper second-class degree or MSc in a materials, physics, engineering or chemistry - related subject.

UK : EPSRC PhD Studentship Formal reasoning about human-computer interaction for the design and safe use of interactive medical devices

Queen Mary, University of London - School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science

(Ref CHI+MED/Q0901)

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on formal reasoning about human-computer interaction for the design and safe use of interactive medical devices as part of the CHI+MED (www.chi-med.ac.uk) project. Based at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London, the successful candidate will be part of the internationally leading Theory and Interaction, Media and Communication (IMC) research groups as well as the CHI+MED team.

CHI+MED is a major EPSRC funded multidisciplinary research project that brings together researchers from Queen Mary, University of London, UCL, Swansea University, and City University. It aims to improve the usability and safety of interactive medical devices. This is a pressing area for research because even simple errors can result in incorrect treatment, or patient death.

Under the supervision of Paul Curzon (www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/~pc/) of Queen Mary and Duncan Brumby (www.uclic.ucl.ac.uk/people/d.brumby/) of the UCL Interaction Centre, the successful candidate will investigate formal computational modeling and reasoning to support the prevention of human error. The focus will be on the basic setting of an individual working with a single device. This will involve the development of formal logic-based models of human behaviour with linked methods, based on model checking or proof to analyse medical scenarios.

The detailed focus of the project will be developed by the student in the early stages of their research. However, one possible focus is work to support the design of device interfaces and work practices to help individuals avoid making slip errors in multi-tasking scenarios. Such situations, with frequent interruptions, are the norm in a hospital environment.

Key Requirements

Applicants for the PhD studentships will need to have a first or upper-second (2:1) class honours degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology or another related area and be able to demonstrate a strong mathematical background. High levels of ability in computing and programming and a clear interest in formal methods and human-computer interaction are also required.

British and EU nationals who meet the UK residency requirements, as outlined at http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/StudentEligibility.htm, will receive a full award that covers both tuition fees and a tax-free annual stipend starting at £15,290 per annum. The post is also open to overseas candidates, however the studentship will then only cover UK tuition fees (£3,390 per annum) and stipend. If an overseas student is successful we may apply for a fee-waiver to cover the additional fees, though this is considered by the college on a case-by-case basis.

The studentship runs for 42 months full-time starting January 2010 and is subject to meeting satisfactory milestones.

Further Details

Further information concerning the studentship and the application form, is on the web at: http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/vacancies/
