UK: University reading PhD Studentship - October 2008

Department of Soil Science

School of Human and Environmental Sciences

A University PhD studentship is offered for the following research topic. Applications are invited from students with an upper second class honours degree or above in environmental science, or a related discipline. The closing date for applications is 16 April 2008.

  • Fate and transport of zero valent iron nanoparticles in the environment (Dr C D Collins, Dr E J Shaw and Prof G Mitchell (CfAM), Golders (External partner)
    Email: c.d.collins@reading.ac.uk Tel. 0118 378 8910.

The Department of Soil Science is internationally respected, obtaining a grade 5 in the last RAE. www.reading.ac.uk/soilscience/pg-research

Project Outline
Nanoparticles offer a chance to create exciting new applications for existing materials as their small size changes their reactivity and properties, because of these novel properties there is concern that their environmental impact may be different to that of the larger sized particles. The combination of potential novel properties and associated environmental concerns has resulted high levels of interest in the industrial, environmental regulation and research communities. The project will enable us to characterise nanoparticles in aquifer materials during their application for remediation of groundwaters. This is a pertinent because in this application nanoparticles are purposefully discharged directly into the environment so creating the potential for negative impacts on biota. The interaction with aquifer materials will enable us to predict the potential of the materials to remain in an active state post remediation.

Training
The student will receive training in a broad range of techniques: organic chemical analysis (GC-FID and GC-MS), microbiology for toxicity assessment, and transmission electron microscopy and environmental scanning electron microscopy. An initial emphasis will be placed upon training in experimental design and statistics to ensure the student develops a rigorous experimental programme.

Training in more generic skills will also be given e.g. hypotheses testing, experimental design, and oral and poster presentations via the Faculty of Science postgraduate programme. The student will work at the frontier of the discipline and to report their findings in high quality journals. At the end of their PhD training, the student will be well-placed for a career in academia or in environmental consultancy.

Industrial Partnership
Golder Associates are supporting the project because they are interested in using nanoparticles for the remediation of groundwaters. Golders will provide an opportunity to gain valuable industrial experience as well as provide an extra £2000 per annum to the stipend.

Nertherlands: Ph.D. Student, IBL, within the section Mol. Microbiology in the Fungal Genetics Research Group Leiden University,

ob description
Function title: Ph.D. Student, IBL, within the section Mol. Microbiology in the Fungal Genetics
The research is conducted on the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger, which in addition to being an important model organism in the biotechnology industry, is also interesting as an example of a saphrophtic fungus –a class of organism which plays an important role in the carbon cycle.

Crude carbon sources, such as plant derived polysaccharides are degraded by a wide spectrum of enzymes produced by A. niger, the resulting degradation products are taken up by the fungus to serve as nutrients. Production of the secreted enzymes is a highly regulated process, but little is known about the regulatory systems involved. The recent availability of the A. niger genome sequence has enabled us to design a strategic approach for the identification and further study of the regulators involved in plant cell wall degradation.

We are currently seeking a motivated and dedicated candidate to join our research group. The position is available on a STW-funded project: “Modification of the expression of transcriptional regulators to improve industrial fermentations with Aspergillus and use of agricultural by-products” which is an active collaboration with Dr. Ronald de Vries and prof. dr. Ireland:PhD Opportunity The Effect of Food Structure on Appetite Institute of Agri-Food and Land Use

Supervisor: Dr James Hollis (j.hollis@qub.ac.uk)

Background: The number of overweight or obese people in the UK has increased rapidly. In the absence of successful intervention strategies, the incidence of obesity is forecast to rise to 60% of the population by 2050. The economic implications of this are significant with direct healthcare costs of overweight and obesity amounting to £45.5 billion pounds (at today's prices) by 2050. Moreover, the social effects are substantial due to overweight and obesity being associated with increased morbidity, mortality and reduced quality of life.

Obesity develops when long-term energy intake is greater than energy expenditure. The environmental and physiological factors that promote over consumption are still poorly understood. However, it is clear that isocaloric portions of different foods have divergent effects on appetite and satiety. The reasons for this are unknown but likely result from differences in factors such as macronutrient content or food structure (such as rheology). A full understanding of how food characteristics influence subjective appetite or physiological markers of appetite will provide insights into how the appetite system operates. Moreover, data from this project will be useful in designing new foods that promote satiety and aid weight management.

Project aim: The aim of this project is to investigate how altering food characteristics (e.g., aeration, rheology, viscosity) influences ingestive behaviour and appetite. The project will consist of a series of studies using human participants.

Project plan: The project will include the following experimental work:

  • Determination of how food characteristics alter mastication parameters and food bolus parameters
  • Determination of how food characteristics alter subjective appetite
  • Determination of how food characteristics influence post-prandial physiology

Candidates for this position will possess at least a 2(i) degree in Human Nutrition, Food Science, Psychology or a related subject.

Closing date: Friday 25 April 2008

The position is available for 3 years from September 2008. The successful applicant will receive a studentship of £12,600 (to cover maintenance expenses) and approved tuition fees. To be eligible for this studentship, a candidate must have been ordinarily resident in the UK or elsewhere in the European Union throughout the period of 3 years immediately preceding the start of the studentship (or would have been so resident had the candidate, the spouse or either parent not been employed temporarily outside the UK or the EU).For informal discussions contact Dr James Hollis (+44 (0)28 9097 6547; j.hollis@qub.ac.uk).

UK: MSc Scholarships in Mathematical Finance, University of Birmingham

Fisher Scholarships: MSc in Mathematical Finance

Department of Economics and School of Mathematics

The University of Birmingham’s MSc in Mathematical Finance teaches technically trained graduates - including in Mathematics, Science and Engineering - to apply their quantitative skills to financial analysis. Successful completion of the MSc will qualify students to work in quantitative analysis in City of London

Recent advances in theoretical finance and computing power have moved quantitative analysis from the margins of the financial world to its core. Rigorous quantitative analysis is now involved in everything from the design and pricing of individual assets to the optimisation of whole portfolios. Birmingham’s MSc in Mathematical Finance gives highly motivated, high performing students an opportunity to work in this area. It is taught by two top ranked institutions - its School of Mathematics and its Department of Economics. Students take core courses in financial econometrics, mathematical finance and computational methods. Optional modules allow them to hone further their technical skills (e.g. further mathematical finance) or to broaden their economic understanding
(e.g. macroeconomics).

The MSc accepts students on the basis of quality rather than quantity. In 2007-08, only one in six applicants were offered places. Thanks to a generous private gift from Andrew Fisher (Birmingham economics 1982; CEO Towry Law), six Fisher Scholarships covering full tuition fees are available. Applicants with first class degrees are automatically considered for Fisher Scholarships as well as internal scholarships offered by the Economics Department, covering from a quarter to full tuition fees. In both cases, scholarships are awarded to the most able applicants, regardless of nationality. Home, EU and overseas students all pay the same fees. This fee structure ensures that the most qualified applicants are accepted, regardless of nationality.

Prospective students are encouraged to apply online via the MSc’s website. Those outside the OECD are encouraged to post any additional material that would help us evaluate their application, including results of standardised assessments such as the GRE and CVs. Non-native speakers of English must attain an IELTS score of 6.5, with no less than 6 in any band. financial institutions, such as banks and hedge funds, or for postgraduate research in mathematical finance.

More information on funding opportunities is provided by the Student Funding Office. The International Office maintains a list
of scholarships to which international students may apply.

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis for study to begin in late September.

Germany: PostDoc / PhD Position in Multiscale Methods for Molecular Dynamics

Our profile
The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg is the first institute of the Max Planck Society dedicated to engineering sciences. Its objective is to bridge the gap between basic research and industrial applications. The newly founded Junior Research Group Population Dynamics aims at a fundamental understanding of disperse phase processes and distributed systems through predictive modelling. We offer a highly interdisciplinary research environment and excellently equipped facilities.

Project: Molecular dynamics simulations of crystal growth For crystals with tailored properties the predictive understanding of crystal growth from solution is of major importance. Molecular dynamics have long time been considered infeasible for simulating crystal growth from the solution due to the associated computational effort. In the recent years scale-integration techniques have provided a possible way to overcome these limitations. In the present project scale integration approaches shall be evaluated for industrially relevant problems. The project comprises molecular dynamics as well as Monte-Carlo simulation of solid-liquid interfaces. The studies shall be complemented with own experimental investigations.

Your profile
A qualified candidate is interested in applied interdisciplinary research and has a M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in a relevant scientific or technical subject, such as chemical engineering, physics, or computational chemistry. Previous experience in scientific computing, modelling of complex systems, Monte-Carlo or molecular dynamics methods is a plus.

Our Offer
Upon qualification of the candidate the payment is on the basis of a Ph.D./Postdoc stipend (1000/1500 Euro/month). The initial contract has a one year term but can be prolonged to a total of three years. Applications from women are particularly welcome. In the case of equal suitability, ability and professional achievements, female candidates will be given preference, provided that the personal qualifications of another candidate are not more appropriate for the position. Applications from candidates with disability are welcome.

Australia: AutoCRC Research Scholarship Safe and Reliable Integration and Deployment Architectures for Automotive Software Systems

AutoCRC Research Scholarship
Safe and Reliable Integration and Deployment Architectures for Automotive Software Systems

Research topic:
In modern automotive systems, the use of sensor networks, ECUs (Electronic Control Units) and software components presents opportunities for building innovative, cost-effective and flexible design solutions. However, the introduction of such software-controlled systems in the safety-critical areas of a car design must be carefully considered. The integration of software components and its implications, i.e. interaction, interoperation and sharing of resources, raise serious safety concerns, which include the possibility of common cause failure and unpredicted dependent failure of critical functions caused by malfunction of noncritical functions.

Further difficulties are caused by the increasing scale and complexity of automotive systems, which may contain up to one hundred sensors and
ECUs as well as hundreds of software components. Within this general research area, the proposed postgraduate research project aims to
identify and develop safe and reliable software integration and deployment architectures, where these architectures map software components/functionalities to available ECUs and govern/coordinate their interaction and interoperation.

Supervisors of the project are Prof Jun Han, Dr Lars Grunske, and Dr Antony Tang.

We are interested in a PhD student who has a very string academic record with background in one or more of the following areas:

  • component-based software engineering (in the areas of embedded systems, robotics, etc. )
  • software architectures and architecture evaluation
  • multi-objective optimisation in software engineering
  • formal methods in system design
  • software and systems engineering for safety and mission-critical systems
  • Communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are also required.

The scholarship carries a value of AUS$28,000 p.a., with fee exemption for both Australian and international students. Additional project
support is also available for the student to carry out the research.

If you are interested in the research project, please provide the following information via email to lgrunske[ at ]swin.edu.au:

  • detailed curriculum vitae
  • an (electronic) copy of undergraduate and postgraduate transcripts
  • evidence of English proficiency (native English speaker, previous studies in English in certain cases, or IELTS of 6.5 with no band below 6).
