UK:PhD studentship The legal regimes in relation to the establishment and operation of wave energy generation devices

Marine Institute and Faculty of Social Science and Business

Based in Plymouth within the Plymouth Business School.

The Marine Institute and the Business School of the University of Plymouth have secured funding from the South West Regional Development Agency PRIMaRe initiative for a significant study on the legal regimes in relation to the establishment and operation of the Cornish Wave Hub, the UK's first offshore facility for the testing of different arrays of marine renewable energy applications.

Such an innovative project will undoubtedly raised various legal issues such as the implications of property rights, safety of navigation as well as environmental protection, etc.

A motivated and capable individual is sought to undertake research and analyses on the legal regimes as well as their implications in the socio-economic context of marine renewable energy generation.

A LLM degree (preferably in Maritime Law, Environmental Law or Energy Law) with a reasonable socio-economic educational background will be required. Good legal research skills and excellent English writing skills will be advantageous.

The studentship is for 3 years and the student will receive a stipend of £12,600 per annum and tuition fees (approximately £3,250). The studentship will only fully fund those applicants who are eligible for Home/EU fees with appropriate qualification. Applicants eligible for overseas fees would have to cover the difference (approximately £5,625) between the Home/EU tuition fee and the tuition fee for an overseas student.

Applicants should complete an application form which can be obtained from http://www.plymouth.ac.uk/pghowtoapply accompanied by other documents indicated on the webpage. Completed applications should be sent to the address stated on the back of the application form.

The closing date for applications is 11 April 2008. It is planned to hold interviews for short-listed candidates one week after the closing date.

If you wish to discuss the studentship before applying, please contact Dr Jingjing Xu on jxu1@plymouth.ac.uk.
