UK : PhD Studentship The Interactions Between Tissue Growth, Pore Geometry and Cell Mechanics In Skeletal Tissue Engineering

University of Southampton - School of Engineering Sciences

A PhD studentship is now available in the Bioengineering Sciences Research group, School of Engineering Sciences (SES), which fully covers University tuition fees (at EU/UK level**) and provides a tax-free bursary of £13,290 per year, rising annually (each October) in line with the UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate, for a 3-year duration.

**EU/UK fees £3390 p.a., Overseas fee £13,885 p.a. (figures subject to annual increase).

There is NO additional funding available for overseas fees. We regret it will not be possible to consider your application unless you can provide funding from other sources to pay the fees difference (£10,495 for 2009/10).

Project description:

As a result of trauma and disease there is a large unmet clinical need for the repair of skeletal tissues such as bone and cartilage. Regenerative medicine or tissue engineering is an exciting new approach which aims to repair skeletal damage by regenerating bone or cartilage using the patient's own cells. Typically this involves the combination of cells with a porous biomaterial (scaffold) which serves as a temporary carrier and template. However, lack of tissue ingrowth into such scaffolds is currently a major problem in the application of porous biomaterials for regenerative medicine strategies, as well as the integration and stability of orthopaedic implants used in for example hip revision surgery.

The aim of the project is to understand exactly how cells form new tissue within porous biomaterials and how cell mechanics interacts with pore geometry.

The approach will be centred around the use of in-vitro cell culture systems with well defined pore shapes and structures to determine the type, growth and organisation of the tissue formed. This work will involve the development and design of experimental (mechanical loading) set ups, planning and conducting cell culture experiments, microscopy/histology, and could involve the analysis of the experimental results using computer simulations. It is therefore expected that the successful candidate will have broad research interests, cell culture experience is not essential, as training will be provided. The project will use the brand new cell culture facilities within the School of Engineering Sciences and will be conducted in close collaboration with the Bone and Joint Research Group at the School of Medicine.

The School is a diverse community which is committed to creating an inclusive working and learning environment in which all individuals are equally treated and valued, and can achieve their potential. The School considers all studentship applications in relation to academic criteria and regardless of the individual's race, nationality, gender, or belief.

Entry requirements: Candidates will have a first class or upper second class degree (or its equivalent) in relevant disciplines, e.g. engineering, biomedical/biomechanical engineering, or relevant biological disciplines. The successful candidate will work with a group of highly motivated, first class research students in the areas of bioengineering and tissue engineering

Commencing on: 1 January 2010

Closing date for applications: A rolling deadline applies.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Bram Sengers, Bioengineering Sciences Research group, Email: bramseng@soton.ac.uk.

UK : PhD Studentships Trustworthy Voting Systems from the Department of Computing.

University of Surrey

Stipend: £13,290 per annum (tax free)

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on an EPSRC-funded project on Trustworthy Voting Systems, a collaborative project involving the University of Surrey and the University of Birmingham, and working closely with the University of Luxembourg.

Electronic voting is a large and fruitful area of current research. Much of the effort has been focused on using state-of-the-art systems such as Prêt à Voter for supervised voting (in polling stations). Providing voters with the ability to vote remotely brings fresh challenges because of the lack of control over the voting ceremony and the additional threats that arise as a result of the necessary communication. This PhD studentship will investigate and propose approaches to incorporating remote voting into Prêt à Voter with appropriate adaptations, and will pay particular consideration to the security issues that emerge. Possible approaches include fully electronic mechanisms (voting over the internet), physical approaches based on postal voting, and hybrids of these.

The student will spend most of the time in the academic setting at the University of Surrey, but it is likely that there will be opportunities to spend some time in Luxembourg working with Professor Peter Ryan.

The studentship will cover tuition fees and a tax-free maintenance grant of £13,290 per annum, adjusted annually in line with the maintenance allowances of the UK research councils.

The studentships are open to all UK and EU nationals. Non-EU nationals are welcome to apply, but may need additional funding to cover the difference between EU tuition fees and overseas tuition fees.

We seek a student with at least an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or Mathematics. A good masters degree would be an advantage. Good communication and team-working skills are essential.

Informal enquires can be made to Dr James Heather (j.heather@surrey.ac.uk) or Professor Steve Schneider (s.schneider@surrey.ac.uk).

To apply, please send a CV with copies of academic qualifications and transcripts (BSc, MSc) to Maggie Burton (M.Burton@surrey.ac.uk) or by post to:

Attn. Mrs Maggie Burton Department of Computing (H3) University of Surrey Guildford GU2 7XH

If your degree is not complete at the time of application, please include a recommendation letter from your dissertation supervisor or equivalent.

The studentship is available from 1st January 2010.

UK : PhD Studentship - Diagnosis and prognosis of aircraft wing health using novel validated and verified techniques

Cranfield University

Academic Supervisors: Professor Phil Irving

Duration: Three years

Supported by Cranfield IVHM centre, a studentship up to £17,000 p.a. for 3 years plus fees* is available

Cranfield University’s Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) centre has an exciting research opportunity for a motivated graduate in structural health monitoring of aircraft.

The development of techniques to diagnose and give prognosis of the health and damage state of aircraft and other structures is the subject of intensive current research. Recent innovations in sensor and monitoring techniques have demonstrated many possible techniques for detection of growing faults and defects in structures. Little is known about the quantitative performance of many of them; hence they have not been matched to aircraft structural integrity requirements.

This research will establish capabilities of selected monitoring techniques for detecting and measuring faults of aircraft wings and relate the data to structural degradation processes such as fatigue by making quantitative predictions of future service life. An important aspect of the research is the development of generic models to extend application of the techniques across a wide range of geometries and structural scales. The research will involve significant collaboration with industry and the opportunity to conduct part of the research in Canada at the National Research Centre Laboratories Ottawa.

Cranfield University’s newly created Centre for Integrated Health Management was established in 2008 to provide a focus for European research in this important and challenging area of research. It seeks both to perform research and to develop routes to service implementation of systems to monitor and manage the health of safety critical structures and systems such as aircraft and high speed ground vehicle transport. The centre is an exciting, challenging, multidisciplinary place to work combining university research and industrial collaboration with 5 major industry partners currently involved.

  • Scholarships can be utilised at the institution of choice of the scholarship winner. They will not be bound to the institution of origin of the student.
  • Funding will only commence with written proof of acceptance to the relevant programme at the institution of choice.
  • Students who choose to study outside of South Africa will be required to return to South Africa to work as economists for a period equivalent to that for which they held the scholarship.
  • All institutions of higher learning in Southern Africa are encouraged to participate in the scholarship programme, including but not limited to proposing their best students for the scholarships.
  • Selection of scholarship holders will be through a panel of economists identified and appointed by the ERSA Academic Board.
  • ERSA scholarship holders studying in South Africa will be expected to attend the ERSA workshop programmes in the research group that are relevant to their area of specialisation. For more information on these research groups, see http://www.econrsa.org

Europe : Erasmus Mundus Master Scholarship 2010 in Complex Systems Science

University of Warwick, Ecole Polytechnique (Paris), Chalmers University and University of Gothenburg are pleased to announce a new joint Masters Programme in Complex Systems Science

  • First entry: Sept 2010
  • Course Duration: 2 years
  • Location: each student spends time in at least two of Warwick, Paris, Gothenburg
  • Erasmus Mundus Scholarships available, for both EU and “third country” (overseas) students.

Website: www.warwick.ac.uk/go/emmcs

We are delighted to be able to nominate up to around 17 applicants each year for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship (two years duration).

Formally the details are to be found via the Erasmus Mundus website http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/erasmus_mundus, and in particular the “Programme guide” linked there. However here are the headlines as they apply to our two year course.

For students from Third Countries (category A), the scholarship is intended by EU to enable you to participate in the programme without further funding.

European students (category B) should note that the monthly allowance above is only a contribution towards your living expenses and there is no travel allowance: you will need your own resources in addition.

We are happy to consider students with other sources of funding, for a limited number of places. You will have to pay the “Course Participation Costs” listed above.

Category A means students who are from outside (not a national of nor resident in) Europe in the following sense (category B).

Category B means students who are nationals or residents of:

  • EU member states;
  • EFTA countries in the EEA;
  • “[EU] candidate countries which have a pre-accession strategy, in accordance with the general principles and general terms and conditions laid down in the framework agreements concluded with these countries for their participation in Community programmes”;
  • “the countries of the Western Balkans, in accordance with the general principles and general terms and conditions laid down in the framework agreements concluded with these countries for their participation in Community programmes”

We understand Switzerland has not yet satisfied the special criteria for its joining under category B, but is probably ineligible under category A. Any clearer guidance on this welcome!

Japan : Japan-IMF Scholarship Program 2010-2011 for Asia (JISPA)

The Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) was first introduced in 1993. It is funded by the Government of Japan, administered by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and conducted at various graduate schools in Japan. Its objective is to contribute to institutional capacity building in economic policymaking to promote the sustainable growth of emerging and developing economies in Asia and the Pacific. By training future macroeconomic managers in these countries, the JISPA aims to enable them to better formulate sound economic and financial stability policies needed for sustainable growth and development.

Overview

The JISPA targets highly motivated government officials who may serve as future macroeconomic policy makers with the capacity and vision to contribute effectively to the economic development of their countries. Scholarship awards are made on the basis of the candidate’s academic record and work background, mathematical and statistics skills, English language proficiency, and potential for contributing to the macroeconomic and financial management and economic development of their country. The assessment also includes qualities such as the candidate’s commitment to public service, willingness to learn, and openness to new ideas.

Currently, the JISPA is open to qualified candidates from the following countries:

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Island Countries, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

The scholarship covers tuition-related costs and most living expenses for the scholar herself/himself. Officials who receive the JISPA scholarship cannot accept other scholarships. Scholars are expected to devote full time to their studies while in Japan.

The program comprises two tracks: the partnership track and the open track. Because of the strong competition for scholarships, the JISPA is highly selective. In 2010-2011, a total of 30 new scholarships are available to candidates for the partnership track. There is no fixed limit on new scholarships for the open track, but generally only a small number of scholarships are awarded.

Download: JISPA Brochure JISPA Brochure

The Partnership Track

The partnership track of the JISPA allows scholars to study a specially designed graduate level course concentrating on macroeconomics at an IMF partnership university. In 2010, the partnership universities1 that will be accepting scholars are:

Partnership Universities

  • National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS): one year program
  • Hitotsubashi University (HIT): two year program
  • International University of Japan (IUJ): two year program

All subjects, including the thesis component, are taught entirely in English.

The universities offer subjects that cover essential elements that will allow scholars to enter the macroeconomic policy dialogue at an international level. They also offer various optional subjects that will allow scholars to pursue their particular interests, relevant to the topic of their master’s thesis. This thesis component is considered one of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of the program.

Subjects are taught by dedicated professors, many of whom have experience working as professionals of the IMF, World Bank, or other international institutions.

The application deadline for the partnership track is December 10, 2009. After an initial screening of applications, select candidates will be contacted by the IMF to arrange an interview, which is typically done in-country with representatives from the partnership universities. A math and/or English examination may also be administered at this time. Final selection will be made on the basis of the in-country interview, math and English competencies, the application form, and any other supplementary information.

Eligibility requirements

Target countries: Under current program guidelines, candidates must be a national of one of the following countries:

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Island Countries, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

Work: Candidates should also currently work for one of the following or related agencies:

central bank, ministry of economy, ministry of finance, ministry of planning/development, ministry of trade/commerce, tax administration, or national statistics bureau. The program will also consider officials working in other areas of government that have a significant impact on the formulation or implementation of macroeconomic policy.

The Open Track

The open track of the JISPA provides support to scholars who wish to study graduate-level macroeconomics or a related field at either the master’s or PhD level at any leading university in Japan. It is geared towards highly motivated officials who are able to identify a course of study in Japan suitable to their professional pursuits in the public sector and supportive of their future work as an economic policy maker. They typically cover all or most of tuition cost and related expenses and provide a monthly stipend for the scholar. The scholarship covers expenses incurred by the scholar only.

For a master’s degree, a scholarship can be awarded for up to two consecutive one-year periods and for a PhD degree for up to three consecutive one-year periods, depending on a university’s requirements under a specific course of study. Annual renewal of the scholarship is subject to approval by the IMF, based on the scholar’s progress, university’s assessment, and sponsoring agency’s consent.

To be eligible for the open track, applicants must first apply directly to the university of their choice and be accepted in a graduate-level program in an appropriate discipline. The IMF maintains no information on the application processes at Japanese universities. The IMF can also consider providing support to those eligible scholars who have already commenced their studies in Japan.

To apply for the open track scholarship, applicants must complete the application form. In addition, they should submit a copy of the letter of acceptance into a graduate-level program from a Japanese university (please see the application guidelines for the open track for the complete information). There is no application deadline for the open track.

Award of the scholarship will depend on the suitability of the chosen university and course of study, as well as a combination of the applicants’ educational background, work experience, and potential for future promotion in one of the key government agencies for economic policy making. Under the open track, the IMF will notify selection results within two months of an applicant’s complete submission of requested application material.

EM Master Scholarship 2010 in Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management

Erasmus Mundus Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM)
The Erasmus Mundus Master in Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM) is a two-year, English taught international Master’s programme, in which five high-rated European universities participate. As a student, you will familiarise yourself with the key issues involved in providing sustainable, environmentally friendly, legally and economically acceptable solutions to various problems in the CoMEM field.

During the programme, you will study at universities in three different countries. The participating students spend the first semester in Trondheim, Norway, the second in Delft, the Netherlands. During the second year, CoMEM students can either go to Barcelona (Spain), London (UK) or Southampton (UK) for the third semester. After that you will be doing your thesis work at one of the three universities you visited.

All participating universities have long-standing relations with private firms, public administrations and other research and education institutes, which as a student you will benefit from. Not only does studying in different European countries mean you will meet and work with professionals from various backgrounds and gather knowledge on a wide range of issues involved, you will also get a comprehensive EU perspective on CoMEM related issues. This will help you develop a coherent and integrated approach that is applicable to a more global perspective as well.

EU scholarships for 15-17 selected “third-country”graduate students will be available for CoMEM MSc in 2010-2012. Third country graduate students are nationals from a third-country other than those from EU member states, eea-EFTA states and candidate countries for accessionto the European Union.

Scholar programme

A limited number of scholarships are available for third-country scholars. A scholar is an academic and/or professional of outstanding experience who carries out teaching or research assignments and scholarly work within the framework of the CoMEM Erasmus Mundus Masters Course. Erasmus Mundus scholarships allow third-country scholars to perform a teaching or research assignment or other scholarly work of three months at the Masters consortium. The consortium decides who receives an Erasmus Mundus scholarship on the basis of two main criteria. The first criterion is to strengthen the educational and research profile of the major delivering third-country universities/countries of MSc students to the course. The second criterion is the scholar’s research and educational profile (minimum requirement MSc, preferably PhD and preferably coming from a faculty position).

Scholars have to apply for these scholarships directly to the Erasmus Mundus Masters consortium offering the Course. Eligible scholars should not be nationals and residents of EU Member States, EEA-EFTA States (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and candidate countries (Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey).

Partner universities

The five universities that participate in the CoMEM programme are:

  • Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands
Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Department of Hydraulic Engineering
  • Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway
Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology, Department of Civil and Transport Engineering
