UK : Fully funded Environmental Sciences Secured Funding PhD studentship

Fully Funded EU PhD Studentship in Global Seismology

University of East Anglia - School of Environmental Sciences

School of Environmental Sciences

This fully funded studentship is available to start in January 2010, under the supervision of Dr Ana Ferreira in the internationally renowned School of Environmental Sciences, UEA Norwich (RAE 5**). The project is funded by the EU project QUEST.

INTERNATIONAL/EU APPLICANTS ONLY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS FUNDING (this is because of the eligibility rules of the funding body)

Project description:

FUNDING IS AVAILABLE FOR INTERNATIONAL AND EU STUDENTS. FUNDING AWARDED FOR THIS PROJECT WILL COVER TUITION FEES AND STIPEND FOR INTERNATIONAL AND EU STUDENTS. UK STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS FUNDING.

This fully funded studentship is available to start in January 2010, under the supervision of Dr Ana Ferreira in the internationally renowned School of Environmental Sciences, UEA Norwich (RAE 5**). The studentship is funded by the EU project QUEST (Quantitative estimation of Earth's sources and STructure) involving 15 partners from France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland and UK. The project aims at advancing our understanding of the global dynamics of the Earth's deep interior through the construction of new, sharper images of physical properties (seismic velocity, anisotropy and attenuation) in the Earth's mantle. We will use improved seismic wave propagation tools to enhance seismic images of the Earth's mantle, including purely numerical methods. Moreover, we will explore data processing and analysis techniques to extract more information from seismic data (seismograms) recorded by global seismic networks. This project offers the opportunity to work in an international research setting through collaboration with the various partners in the consortium. Visits to partner institutions and participation in consortium workshops will be integral part of this work. The student will receive training in seismic wave propagation theory, in time series analysis, in the handling of large data sets, in inverse theory, in high-performance computing and in computational methods. • Applicants must not already hold a PhD degree. • Applicants must have strong quantitative skills and hold a degree in geoscience, physics, maths or related subject. • At the time of selection for this position, applicants must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research career. This is measured from the date of award of the degree that entitles the applicant to embark on a doctorate. • Applicants must have excellent written and spoken English and be highly motivated to work in an international team. • In line with EU requirements, applicants must demonstrate trans-national mobility, i.e. they must move to the UK from their present country of residence. The project is not generally open to applicants who are presently in the UK. Please check section II.1 of the FP 7 PEOPLE Work Programme for details. An application form can be downloaded from our website: http://www1.uea.ac.uk/cm/home/services/units/mac/aao/courses/PG In addition to the application form, please make sure that you in include in your application: course transcripts, two letters of reference, curriculum vitae, a letter explaining your motivation to do this particular project and any other information that you may find important. Applicants must meet UEA requirements for proficiency in English Language. Please send your application material to the Postgraduate Admissions Office, Science Faculty, University of East Anglia, Norwich, NR4 7TJ, UK (scipg@uea.ac.uk, Fax 01603 591045).
