Nertherlands: Ph.D. Student, IBL, within the section Mol. Microbiology in the Fungal Genetics Research Group Leiden University,

ob description
Function title: Ph.D. Student, IBL, within the section Mol. Microbiology in the Fungal Genetics
The research is conducted on the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger, which in addition to being an important model organism in the biotechnology industry, is also interesting as an example of a saphrophtic fungus –a class of organism which plays an important role in the carbon cycle.

Crude carbon sources, such as plant derived polysaccharides are degraded by a wide spectrum of enzymes produced by A. niger, the resulting degradation products are taken up by the fungus to serve as nutrients. Production of the secreted enzymes is a highly regulated process, but little is known about the regulatory systems involved. The recent availability of the A. niger genome sequence has enabled us to design a strategic approach for the identification and further study of the regulators involved in plant cell wall degradation.

We are currently seeking a motivated and dedicated candidate to join our research group. The position is available on a STW-funded project: “Modification of the expression of transcriptional regulators to improve industrial fermentations with Aspergillus and use of agricultural by-products” which is an active collaboration with Dr. Ronald de Vries and prof. dr. Han Wösten from Utrecht University (Microbiology).
