Japan : The Toshiba Fellowship Programme 2010

Toshiba, supported by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) is offering outstanding European scientists the opportunity to join one of its high-technology research teams in Japan for up to two years. The fellowship is open to PhD level researchers of EU nationality currently working in a UK academic institution. The research areas vary broadly from year to year in the field of science and engineering. The Programme offers the successful Fellow a generous package including travel to and from Japan.

Application is open from Tuesday 01 September 2009 through to Friday 11 December 2009 inclusive

The Programme has successfully operated for over 25 years, enjoying a strong and long-running collaboration with the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) as well as fostering and developing the relationship between Japanese industry and UK academia. The successful Fellow receives a generous package, including relocation assistance to and from Japan, together with support and advice prior to and during their stay.

  • Methodology for highly reliable industrial network design and testing

Media Technologies Research Topics

  • Unified approach to automatic speech recognition and knowledge integration
  • Emotional speech synthesis
  • Machine vision for object recognition
  • Dialogue interface for robots

Software Research Topics

Software optimisation technologies for multi-core processors

Software design technology for dependable as well as cost-effective embedded systems

Materials & Devices Research Topics

  • Quantum computing devices
  • Microwave frequency spin-torque oscillator technology
  • Novel nano-devices fabricated by self-organization processes
  • Developments of organic functional materials for advanced light-emitting devices
  • Semiconductor power module packaging technologies for high temperature applications

Security Research Topics

  • Automated proof for computational security of cryptography

Other Research Topics

Proposals from applicants for new advanced research topics which are relevant to the Toshiba Fellowship Programme 2010 research areas are also welcome. Toshiba appreciates such proposals and will determine their acceptability based on the current circumstances of Toshiba’s R&D activities.
