UK : PhD Studentship Title: Methodologies for the development of plastic electronics

Ref: VAR0909
Teesside University is offering a Research Doctoral Scholarship, funded by One North East in Year 1, and by Teesside University in Year 2 and Year 3. Successful applicants should be in a position to take up the scholarship by not later than December 2009.

Title: Methodologies for the development of plastic electronics

The proposed project is to investigate the three key aspects of this research:

1. Understanding Charge Transport Mechanisms
As part of the project we will analyse and model how charge transport mechanisms on organic semi-conductors occur in order to gain an improved understanding which will be helpful for designing new organic semi-conductors.

2. Device Fabrication
This aspect of the work will develop a novel highly replicable nano-microfabrication workflow for the manufacture of organic based electronic circuits.

3. Developing Organic Semi-conductors
We will investigate the use of novel organic materials in combination with thin silicon, which allow processing in solution and simultaneously are able to achieve a high OFET mobility.

The work has potential to improve significantly the performance of emerging organic electronic products, thereby promising to make contributions to the research and innovation of this area.

Conditions

This studentship will involve a one to three month placement (in Year 1) with a company in the North East of England. Due to the funding being from different sources, the funding and conditions are different in each year. The Terms and Conditions governing the scholarship will be sent to you in the Application Pack and you should read these very carefully to ensure you can agree to and meet the different conditions before sending in the application.

Research Doctoral Scholarships applicants should have at least an upper second class honours degree, preferably a first and ideally a postgraduate qualification. The minimum English language entry level is IELTS 6.5 with no grade below 6.0 or equivalent.
