The Opto-Electronic Devices Group of the Department of Electrical Engineering, invites applications for a 4-year Ph.D position in integrated semiconductor frequency comb and ultrafast laser systems. The position can be started any time this year. The research is part of a new programme involving a consortium of researchers at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, Universiteit Twente and three companies (Cedova B.V., Lionix B.V. and Toptica). The research is on 1.5µm quantum dot modelocked femtosecond lasers and integrated pulse shapers with fast shaping capabilities. Applications are in frequency comb measurement systems and biophotonic non-linear imaging. This work builds on earlier results we have obtained with quantum dot modelocked lasers and integrated pulse compressors.

Pathobiology of schizophrenia

Molecular & Cellular Therapeutics

Two PhD studentships are available, each relating to the pathobiology of schizophrenia. The appointees will join an active research group and our collaborative network to conduct behavioural and cellular studies on mice mutant for genes associated with risk for schizophrenia, under an SFI Principal Investigator award. Molecular genetic tools are now available to examine how genes interact with environmental factors to disrupt normal brain development and behaviour. The objective of the present research program is the phenotypic resolution of gene-environment and gene-gene interplay in mice containing mutations of schizophrenia risk genes. A multidisciplinary approach will employ behavioural, imaging and cellular techniques to elucidate gene - environment and gene - gene relationships in the context of putative schizophrenia endophenotypes.

Applicants should have or expect to attain a first or upper second class honours degree or a suitable postgraduate qualification in a subject related to neuroscience and should demonstrate an interest in research related to schizophrenia. The studentship includes an annual stipend based on IRCSET rates together with tuition fees.

Research
This project aims to investigate the hydro-mechanical behaviour of granular materials. The research will be mainly experimental and tests will be carried out under unsaturated conditions.

Enthusiastic and self-motivated candidates with at least a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in civil engineering (or equivalent) or mechanical engineering are encouraged to apply. Both home and overseas candidates are eligible.

The student will be jointly supervised by academics from both Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh Universities and have access to resources at both universities. Both universities are located in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The School of the Built Environment (Heriot-Watt University) currently has over 80 PhD and MPhil students. Students originate from a broad spectrum of undergraduate disciplines and ethnic origins. This wide skills base and diverse background knowledge provides a unique environment for the evolution of exciting multidisciplinary research.

UK : PhD Studentship in Robotic Abrasive Finishing Technology Development - University of Huddersfield

Applications are invited for a fully funded three-year full-time research studentship leading to a PhD. The Scholarship funding

About the scholarships
The Blyth Cambridge Scholarships are offered annually to Canadian high school graduates who wish to take their undergraduate degree at Cambridge University in England. Selection process
