Technische Universiteit Eindhoven Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry
Job description
The performance of coatings often depends crucially on the adherence of the coating to the substrate. In order to improve the contact and bonding between coating and substrate nowadays often the surface is modified, in other words, a pre-treatment or adherence promoter is applied. While effective in particular cases, there seems to be no universal promoter, harmless to environment and applicants. The recent application of dopamine and related compounds is an exception. It is the purpose of the present proposal to investigate the mechanism of operation of this surface modifier and a few similar compounds. To that purpose, the structure (orientation of promoter with respect to substrate, coverage of the substrate, thickness of promoter layer, etc.), and behaviour of this surface modifier on various polymer and metallic substrates will be studied as a function of environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, pH, salt) and as a function of time. Both the short-term and long-term adherence of coatings deposited using this type of promoter will be studied.

Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry
The Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry (ST) is one of the nine departments of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). It was established in 1957. The department has approximately 390 employees (360 fte), 13 full professors, 370 undergraduate students (bachelor and masterstudents) and about 170 graduate students (140 Ph.D. and 30 design engineers). The department aspires to be an academic institution for education and research in chemical science and engineering that meets the highest international standards. The aim is to generate and to develop technology and scientific knowledge relevant for the long-term needs of society. Scientific curiosity and the use of newly generated knowledge are the main driving forces for the continuing enhancements of the three chosen fields of expertise: molecular, materials, and process engineering.
