Switzerland : ETH Zurich PhD Position in Geophysics

Modelling Holocene Geomagnetic Field Evolution

Institute of Geophysics

A funded PhD studentship on the topic "Modelling Holocene Geomagnetic Field Evolution" is available from September 2008 in the Earth and Planetary Magnetism Group at the Institute of Geophysics, ETH Zurich.

This studentship forms part of a multi-disciplinary project examining links between the evolution of Earth's magnetic field, variations in cosmogenic isotope production rates, and climate change during the Holocene (past 10,000yrs). This ETH funded project involves detailed study of sediments from Swiss lakes which provide a high-resolution, continuous archive of magnetic and environmental change.

The attention of the student will focus on deriving new models of global geomagnetic field evolution spanning the past 10,000 years from databases of archeomagnetic and paleomagnetic measurements and using the new high-resolution swiss lake records. The student will develop and extend existing inversion schemes to account for the peculiarities of palaeomagnetic data. Implications of the derived patterns of magnetic field variation for the our understanding of the geodynamo in Earth's core will also be investigated.

The project will be primarily supervised by Dr. Chris Finlay in close collaboration with Prof.Dr. Andrew Jackson and Dr. Ann Hirt. Training will be provided in methods of data analysis, inverse theory, geomagnetism and software development. For further information on the Earth and Planetary Magnetism group consult http://www.epm.ethz.ch
