Function title: 2 PhD researchers in Lithospere Dynamics
Starting June 1st 2008, we seek to fill two new PhD positions in our team at Utrecht University. The PhD research projects emphasize quantitative modelling as a means to better understand solid earth processes, Focus of the first PhD project is on strain localization (damage zones) in the development of faults, shear zones and plate boudaries. The second PhD project focuses on the imprint of Cenozoic subduction and collision on the Anatolian region.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
We seek outstanding individuals with a recent MSc or equivalent degree, who can demonstrate an excellent background in mathematics and physics, and specifically continuum mechanics. Proficiency in at least one modern computer language is a necessity. Experience with tools for the numerical solution of partial differential equations is appreciated. The successful candidate is able to demonstrate an interest in Earth processes and in geophysical and geological observations. She/he communicates easily in English, both verbally and in writing.

The faculty of Geosciences offers a wide spectrum of education and research concerning the geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and antroposphere. The Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development and Innovation is a research institute and aims to support the search for sustainable development and innovation through the development of knowledge, methods and instruments. Four research groups participate in the institute: Science, Technology and Society (Faculty of Science), Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies and Policy, and the department of Innovation Studies (DIS; faculty of Geosciences).
The Geodynamics Research Group is an internationally acclaimed team of scientists, headed by Professor Rinus Wortel and Professor Wim Spakman, that focuses on lithosphere and mantle processes, in particular in the Mediterranean region. The Department of Earth Sciences encompasses the full spectrum of Solid Earth Sciences and currently hosts an international group of about 100 PhD’s and post-doctoral researchers.

Conditions of employment
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2500 - 3000
Salary: scale 10.
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2558
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 4 years
Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
Successful candidates will be offered a full-time PhD position for a period of four years, with the specific intent that it results in a doctorate. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities. The gross monthly salary starts at € 2,000.- in the first year and increases to € 2,558.- in the fourth year and is supplemented by a holiday allowance of 8% per year and a year-end bonus of 6.4%. We also offer a pension scheme, a health insurance allowance and flexible employment conditions. The PhD candidates will be based at the Department of Earth Sciences of the Faculty of Geosciences.
