Agrotechnology & Food Sciences Group
Wageningen, 6703 HD (Gelderland), 38 hours per week
Job description
Aquatic sediments in industrialized countries often are highly polluted. The high costs for remediation of such polluted sediments often lead to stagnation of maintenance of the water system and beneficial reuse of sediments. Recently it was shown that high affinity sorbents (for instance natural black carbon or manufactured activated carbon) added to sediments are able to bind organic pollutants very effectively.
The main objective of this project, which is financed by STW, is to develop safe technologies to reduce the risks of contaminated sediments to safe limits, using such carbon additions.
The project requires two PhD researchers assisted by a technician (1 full time equivalent) who will closely cooperate in several subprojects along two parallel research lines. One PhD will work at Envrionmental Technology , the other PhD will work at the Aquatic Ecology and Water quality management group.
The work at Environmental Technology will be directed to kinetic aspects on risk by addition of black carbon to contaminated sediment. Measurements on the flux of contaminants from sediment to activated carbon will be performed to increase insight in transport phenomena of organic pollutants in sediment. Modelling and experiments at field scale will be used for a process design. The process design is directed to implementation of new technologies by the end-users, who participate in the funding of the project.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
MSc in Environmental technology or Bioprocess engineering with affinity for linking laboratory results to modeling approaches for environmental samples, excellent writing skills, excellent communicative skills, strong orientation to team work, affinity for applied work.
