Delft University of Technology Applied Sciences
Delft, (Zuid-Holland), 38 hours per week
Job description
This project aims at understanding how evolutionary adaptation to temperature cycles has contributed to shaping the regulation and kinetic properties of the metabolic network of yeast. Adaptation to temperature will be addressed at multiple levels, both at a genome-wide scale and, with a greater level of detail, by focusing on a specific pathway, namely glycolysis. This central pathway for sugar metabolism will be investigated by a multi-level ‘systems’ approach. This will involve incorporation of temperature in kinetic models of this key metabolic pathway. In addition to providing an understanding of core regulatory principles in industrial microorganisms, the research will contribute to improvements for specific industrial applications of yeast that involve dynamic temperature profiles. The project will be carried out within the Kluyver Centre for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
Applicants should have a strong background in both chemical/biochemical engineering and microbial physiology and should have an MSc degree, preferably in industrial or metabolic biotechnology. Related engineering or life science-oriented disciplines could be considered as well. In addition, the candidate should have a keen interest in experimental research in the field of industrial fermentation as related to theoretical developments, e.g. mathematical modelling. Candidates are expected to have good communication skills and team spirit. Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is a requirement for this position.
Job type: Research / Advising
Workfield(s):
- Research trainees, non-tenured lecturers, researchers
Organization
Delft University of Technology

The Department of Biotechnology is a world leader in the field of Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology. The department’s Bioprocess Technology section has broad experience in modelling bioreactor systems as well as microbial metabolism. More recently, the research interest has shifted towards developing new experimental hardware, analytical protocols and theoretical tools that allow the in-vivo analysis of the responses of microbial cells to environmental and genetic disturbances. The research focuses on primary carbon metabolism and its regulation.
