Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS): a novel target for antidepressant activity
School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences & Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience
An opportunity to conduct research in the area of neuroscience/neuropharmacology has arisen through a project funded by the Health Research Board for 3 years entitled: “Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS): a novel target for antidepressant activity”
The project will further validate the antidepressant-like properties of nNOS inhibitors in preclinical studies by the characterisation of their effects on behaviour and identification of brain regions involved in their antidepressant-like properties. Furthermore this project will determine if nNOS inhibition can protect the hippocampus from the deleterious effects of stress. Together these studies will further our understanding of the role of nNOS in stress and its potential as a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of stress related disorders such as depression.
Research will be carried out in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience at Trinity College Dublin, starting in October 2008.
Candidates should have at least an upper second-class honours degree in neuroscience/pharmacology/physiology or a biomedical-related undergraduate science degree. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in immunohistochemistry and molecular laboratory techniques.
