Job description
The PhD student will perform his/her research activities embedded in the bio-organic chemistry group. The goal of this PhD project is to develop core-shell polymersomes which can be applied for controlling cascade reactions. Polymersomes are polymeric vesicles which are composed of block copolymer amphiphiles. These capsules can be used for the compartmentalization and encapsulation of enzymes, resulting in a protective environment for these biocatalysts. In this project core polymersomes containing one type of catalyst will be surrounded by a shell of polymersomes containing a different catalyst. Substrate that will diffuse into the core-shell polymersomes first reacts with the shell catalyst before reaching the core catalyst. This allows for efficient cascade catalysis. This project is challenging and multidisciplinary. It combines expertise from polymer chemistry, (bio)catalysis and organic chemistry. The PhD student will develop this line of research as part of a polymersomes research team. He/she will investigate different methodologies for the construction of core-shell structures and will develop efficient model cascade reactions.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
The PhD student should have an MSc background in organic chemistry, preferably combined with expertise in polymer chemistry and/or (bio)catalysis. He/she should have a strong interest in multidisciplinary research. He/she should have the ambition, drive and creativity to perform ground-breaking science. He/she should also have good communication skills and be able to function in a team of scientists with expertise in various fields.

The bio-organic chemistry group aims to create bio-inspired materials and processes in order to combine the functionality of biological systems with the flexibility and robustness of synthetic structures. Smart hybrid materials are developed based on peptides and proteins, using a variety of synthetic techniques such as protein engineering, peptide synthesis and controlled polymerization methods. Natural synthetic processes are mimicked by miniaturization of reaction environments using microsystem technology (Process on a Chip), and by compartmentalization of biocatalysts in polymeric capsules (polymersomes). The bio-organic chemistry group provides an enthusiastic and dynamic international work environment. It is part of the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) and, together with the Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Physical Organic Chemistry & Supramolecular Chemistry group and the Molecular Materials group, it constitutes the Molecular Chemistry cluster. The aim of the IMM is to conduct research and train undergraduate and postdoctoral students in the field of functional molecular structures and materials. The emphasis is on understanding and controlling complexity in order to design new functionality in these systems.

Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2500 - 3000
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2558
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: The first contract will be for 1.5 years, with possible extension by 2.5 years.
Maximum hours per week: 40
Additional conditions of employment:
The candidate will be appointed as a PhD student for a period of four years. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated after 18 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years. Salary scale: PhD scale.
