PhD-researcher X-ray and electron spectromicroscopy of nanoparticles in porous supports (1,0 fte)
(Utrecht), 38 hours per week
Utrecht University, Faculty of Science
Job description
Function title: PhD-researcher X-ray and electron spectromicroscopy of nanoparticles in porous s
Systems containing metal nanoparticles in porous supports will be investigated with Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopes (STEM), in combination with Electron Energy Loss (EELS). The metal L edges and carbon, nitrogen and oxygen K edges will be studied in vacuum with 0.5 nm resolution in a STEM and under reaction conditions with 20 nm resolution is a STXM microscope. The experiments will be accompanied with calculations to simulate the X-ray absorption spectral shapes. The metal edges will be calculated with the charge transfer multiplet program and the ligand K edges with Density-Functional-Theory based programs.
Detailed theoretical support is available in the group. In addition, much knowledge is available in the group on the growth of nanoparticles in porous supports.
The research is part of the Group of Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis that focuses on the synthesis and characterization of materials for heterogeneous catalysis and hydrogen storage, in particular on the in-situ spectro-microscopic characterization of catalytic systems. Within this group, the research of Dr. Frank de Groot focuses on ‘synchrotron spectroscopy and theoretical spectroscopy of nanoparticles’.
