Job description
The Division of Human Nutrition is coordinating the EU-INSTAPA project. This project aims to identify novel staple food-based strategies to improve micronutrient malnutrition for better health and development of women and children in sub-Saharan Africa. The Division is also participating in the work package related to biofortification of staple foods, mainly focussing on vitamin A, iron and zinc in cassava, millet sorghum and maize.
The PhD fellow is involved in assessing the dietary intakes and bioavailability of (pro)vitamin A, zinc and iron from maize-, cassava-, sorghum- and millet-based foods among young children. The PhD will study in more detail the acceptability of (pro)vitamin A biofortified cassava and maize in order to assess factors determining the consumption of these foods and the sensory acceptability. The PhD fellow has to carry out a randomised controlled efficacy trial among children with cassava, biofortified with provitamin A. The PhD has to provide a scientific basis for recommendations for the use of biofortified crops for improvement of micronutrient malnutrition in west-Africa. Various stays of several months in Mali, Benin and Kenya are part of the job.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate with strong interest in nutrition related topics in developing countries, a good planner and organiser
•MSc in Nutrition and Health, Human Physiology, Human Epidemiology, or close related field
•Proven interest in doing research in developing countries, experience with working in African countries is an advantage
•Affinity with micronutrient related research and proven experience in one of the following fields related to food consumption research, acceptability studies, sensory research and nutrition intervention trials
•Capacity to develop expertise in the above fields where no or less experience is gained
•Good communication skills (written, oral) in English, knowledge of French is an advantage
•Enthusiastic, good team player but also able to work independent
•Willingness to stay for short periods in Mali, Benin and Kenya

Conditions of employment
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2500 - 3000
Salary: scale 10.
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2558
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 1,5 2,5 years
Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
Temporary contract for 18 months , for 40 hours per week. Salary: from € 2000,- to € 2558,- based on full time employment. After a positive evaluation of the first 18 months, contract will be extended for the remaining 2 ½ years.
