Applications are invited for a three year studentship to be undertaken in the School of Engineering and Applied Science which has a series of medical device research programmes. The successful applicant will carry out research on a left ventricular assist device (artificial heart) on a collaborative programme with the Wanless Hospital in Miraj, India (part funded by the UKIERI).
Background of the Project
The project aims to develop a low-cost ventricular assist device (VAD) for use in developing economies and the successful applicant will work in a team based both at Aston University and in India and will complete the second year of study in India.
State-of-the-art facilities including a newly commissioned medical devices laboratory and computational engineering suite are available at Aston and the supervisor, Professor Geoff Tansley, is world renowned for his work on ventricular assist devices.
Person specification
Applicants should have a first-class or upper second-class BEng or MEng degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. Mechanical, Biomedical, Manufacturing or Design Engineering or similar.
Financial Support
A three year studentship will pay tuition fees at Home/EU rate and a stipend of £12,900 per year plus additional living expenses whilst in India. This studentship is open to international applicants but they would be expected to pay the difference between the Home and Overseas tuition fees which is currently approximately £8,000 per year. The position is available to start in October 2008.
