Multi-agent Systems Approach to Wireless Network Configuration
University of Bath and University of Bristol with the support of Toshiba Telecommunications Research Laboratory
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath is currently recruiting a PhD. research student in Multi Agent Systems. A scholarship, subject to contract negotiations, is available to cover fees and an annual stipend, subject to eligibility.
This PhD. will be based in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Bath , and is funded under the ICT theme of Great Western Research (the south-west UK regional development agency). The project will be supervised by a multi-disciplinary team from University of Bath and the University of Bristol with the support of Toshiba Telecommunications Research Laboratory, and will build on recent research developments in the fields of multi-agent systems (MAS) and multi-hop and mesh networks.
The project will examine how MAS can be used to model the behaviour of wireless networking systems with the goals of better analysis and understanding of decentralised approaches to managing such systems and greater ease of implementation and configuration. This increased understanding and improved analysis will lead to more efficient use of radio channel resources for multi-user diversity and also between multiple co-existent systems, as well as potentially creating more robust and fair multi-hop and mesh networks.
The successful candidate will have a very strong background in Computer Science or Engineering. Prior experience in multi-agent systems or low level networking would be an advantage. Candidates should have at least a 2.1 undergraduate degree or an MSc. in a relevant discipline. In addition, he/she must offer excellent communication and team working skills suitable for the interdisciplinary project.
Tuition fees and stipend of £12940/year (tax-free) are covered by the studentship, provided by the GWR in collaboration by Toshiba TRL. The studentship is for 3 years and must start in October 2008. Funding is open to applicants of all nationalities but fees will be paid by the scholarship only to the UK/EU level. Therefore Overseas (i.e. non-EU) students will need to find another source of funding for the remainder of their fees. For information on UK/EU and Overseas fee levels, see http://www.bath.ac.uk/prospectus/postgrad/finance/costs.shtml
Suitable candidates are invited to complete the downloadable PhD application form available at www.bath.ac.uk/grad-office/ Use the "Multi-agent Systems Approach to Wireless Network Configuration" as the title for your application. To speed application processing, please ensure that a copy is also sent to PG Admissions Computer Science (mdv@cs.bath.ac.uk ).
Informal enquiries about this Ph.D. studentship may be made to Dr Marina De Vos (mdv@cs.bath.ac.uk or 01225 385053). Early applications are encouraged as competition for Ph.D. scholarships is always intense.
The closing date for applications is 15th July 2008.
