NIOO - KNAW
The dpt. of Terrestial Microbial Ecology of the NIOO is looking for a PhD Student & a Postdoc (m/f)
(Gelderland), 38 hours per week
Job description
Function title: PhD Student & Postdoc
The PhD candidate (CTE-TME-08419) will be the principle researcher of the subproject “Micro-scale patterns of microbial diversity and structure.” The major goal of this project is to determine the micro-scale organization of soil-borne microbial communities and the role of micro-scale patterns and island biogeographical processes in explaining what drives the extremely high diversity within soil-borne microbial communities. This project will utilize novel methods that allow sampling of micro-habitats in soil, including individual soil grains, solid surfaces (including roots and detritus), micro-aggregates and single cells, coupled with modern ultra-high-throughput methods of cultivation and molecular community analysis.
The postdoctoral candidate (CTE-TME-08420) will be responsible for the subproject “Micro-scale environmental (meta)-genomics”. Within this project micro-scale environmental genomics approaches will be used to unlock the life-history strategies and genomic potential of soil-borne microorganisms. This will involve the development and application of micro-scale methods of environmental genomic analysis for soil habitats, including the development of whole genome amplification from minute environmental samples for microscopic meta-genome analysis and the sequencing of individual target cells from the environment.
Requirements
Required education/skills:We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a recent or pending Masters (PhD candidate) or PhD (post-doctoral candidate) degrees in (microbial) ecological or related subjects. The candidates will be based in Heteren, the Netherlands (with a planned move to a new building in Wageningen in the spring of 2010), but must be willing to travel and visit laboratories abroad. The candidates should have good communication skills, both orally and in writing.
