Mobility and Internationalisation in the Higher Education Sector
Stipend: £12,600 pa (under review)
The European Law and Policy Research Group is a research cluster based in the Liverpool Law School website: www.liverpool.ac.uk/law/elprg. The ELPRG is engaged in active-research on aspects of mobility and internationalisation in the Higher Education Sector. In recent years it has undertaken research for a range of bodies including the UK Research Councils, the Higher Education Funding Council and the European Commission on international, academic, mobility.
The ELPRG is also engaged in the development of doctoral training especially in the field of empirical socio-legal research (ESLR). It is currently developing a training programme in ESLR funded by the Economic and Social Research Council's (ESRC) Researcher Development Initiative.
The post is available from 1 September 2008 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to support the development of doctoral research in the field of Mobility and Internationalisation in the Higher Education Sector.
The Studentship has been designed around the ESRC CASE award model. As such it seeks to promote engagement with other disciplines and also with non-academic bodies involved in this research area. You will be jointly supervised by Professor Ackers (in the Law School) and Dr Jo Waters (in the School of Geography). In addition to this you will be directly engaged in research collaborations involving a research consultancy. The Evaluation Partnership (TEP) is a private, independent, company carrying out high quality reviews, assessments and evaluations related to policies, organisations and managerial practice. This provides an important opportunity for you to experience research in a non-academic, business setting. The post is funded for 1 year, in the first instance, and renewable for up to 3 years in total, subject to performance review. You will register for a full-time PhD in the School, with successful continuation into the second year of supervised study for the PhD dependent on satisfactory completion of the School's processes for the monitoring of postgraduate research students. You will be expected to submit your thesis within 3 years of supervised study. An additional (unfunded) year is allowed for writing-up of the thesis.
You will have obtained, or be likely to obtain, a first class or upper second class honours degree in a social science or related discipline. A completed Master's degree would be desirable. The post provides funding for tuition fees at the home/EU rate and a maintenance stipend. Students who are required to pay tuition fees at international level are personally responsible for providing additional funding and will be required to provide proof of ability to meet additional fees in the application process.
