Description of the project
Contamination of rivers and bathing waters by faecal pollution poses an increasing problem for water quality managers in relation to drinking and recreational waters, as well as (shell) fisheries industries. The aim of this translational research project is to address the urgent need by practitioners for tools to determine the origin, identity and levels of pollution. The project thus combines exciting research of a high academic standard with application of research findings in the field. This research builds on the recently completed ICReW project (Improvement of Coastal and Recreational bathing Waters, Pilot Action 3; www.icrew.info) which was funded by the European Union.
The project will be carried out in the Molecular Microbiology group (www.ucd.ie/molmicro) of Professor Wim Meijer in the School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science in collaboration with Dr Bartholomew Masterson.
Selection criteria
We are looking for an enthusiastic scientist who is a team player with excellent organisational skills. The successful applicant has a PhD in Microbiology, Environmental Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or a related area, a background in molecular biology or ecology and an affinity for applied ecological research. Possession of a full driver's license is desirable.
