Job description
The postdoctoral researcher or PhD student will be working in the field of Molecular Neurobiology (incl. neurodevelopmental aspects) using in particular molecular, cell-biological, physiological and behavioural research approaches. He/she will participate in unravelling the molecular basis of neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders, particularly the effects of (epi)genetic and environmental (early-life stress) factors on brain development/ behavioural phenotypes. Project in brief: A fundamental question in the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders is how the interaction between predisposing genes and a change in environment (e.g. early-life stressors) can produce a phenotype that is vulnerable to a neurodevelopmental disorder such as schizophrenia. To tackle this question, a rat model has been developed that displays a complex phenotype remarkably similar to that of patients with schizophrenia. We want to establish the molecular genetic and neurobiological basis of the rat model. In humans, we try to identify the susceptibility genes for psychiatric disorders. Central question of the project: what programs the brain for vulnerability to neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders? Through our studies we hope to highlight the crucial role of neurodevelopmental signalling pathways and stressful (early) life events in programming the brain for vulnerability to these disorders.

Required education/skills:University Graduate
Postdoc : candidates should have obtained a PhD degree in Molecular/Cellular Neurobiology, Molecular Life Sciences or equivalent. Preferably, candidates have a background in Developmental Biology, experience with animal models, and a high affinity for fundamental research related to clinical problems. Relevant experience with animal behavioural research is an advantage. PhD student: candidates for the PhD position should have obtained a Master's degree in Molecular/Cellular Neurobiology, Molecular Life Sciences or equivalent.

Additional conditions of employment:
Postdoc: The candidate will be appointed as postdoctoral researcher for an initial period of one year. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated after that year. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2 years. PhD student : The candidate will be appointed as a PhD student for a period of four years. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated after 18 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.
