Job description
Function title: Modelling oxidation and reduction of advanced high strength steel sheets during
Innovation of vehicles by reducing their weight and hence fuel consumption and associated CO2
emission, can be realized by developing advanced high strength steels, like transformation or twinning induced plasticity steels (TRIP or TWIP). However, protection against corrosion is vital in such applications. Therefore modern high strength steel sheets are coated with zinc by hot-dipped galvanizing. Successful application of such a zinc coating relies on preventing oxides other than iron oxides to develop on the steel surface prior to hot-dipping with zinc. To this end, an annealing process must devised such that in the beginning selective internal oxidation of alloying elements occur and at the end reduction of iron oxides. A numerical model will be developed which describes the oxidation and reduction phenomena upon annealing of advanced high strength steels. This includes a comprehensive assessment of the thermodynamics and kinetics involved. In the modeling work, the relations with steel composition and microstructure are addressed. Aspects of multi-element oxidation and nonequilibrium thermodynamics will be covered in the theoretical approach. In order to validate the theoretical work, experimental studies are foreseen, such as oxidation and reduction kinetics using thermogravimetry, composition and microstructure determination with electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis etc. The numerical model translated into a computer program must deliver the annealing process parameter windows and for the steel alloy design the compositions limits.
