In some cases, disorders may be an adaption that may be helpful whereas in others, it may worsen the effects of the stressor. In this project, the association between type of stress and psychiatric symptomatology will be studied using psychiatric epidemiological data. Questions addressed in this project include:
- What are the effects of anxiety following a myocardial infarction on the progression of heart disease?
- What is the association between the nature of a stressor and symptoms of depression in patients with multiple depressive episodes?
- How do specific symptoms of depression and anxiety emerge and dissolve after an acute cardiac event?
The psychological effects of somatic disease are well studied but reversely, the effects of psychological/psychiatric disorders on the incidence of somatic disease have received far less attention. Although there are many indications that poor psychological health is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, it is not yet clear what aspects are most cardiotoxic. Questions addressed in this project include:
- What specific symptoms of depression and anxiety are associated with an increased risk of incident cardiovascular disease?
- Is depression a precursor of incident cardiovascular disease?
