University of Amsterdam
Job description
Project:
"Characterisation and functional analysis of Fusarium oxysporum effectors".
Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici (Fol) is the causal agent of tomato wilt disease. This project aims at the functional characterization of proteins secreted by Fol upon invasion of the xylem vessels of tomato. Some of these proteins may trigger induction of basal defences, whereas others (called effectors) may suppress these responses allowing the pathogen to cause disease. Analysis of the xylem sap proteome of Fol-infected tomato plants resulted in identification of a large set of Fol secreted proteins. Here, we want to identify the function of these secreted proteins in disease, and identify their molecular targets in the plant. For this research a variety of techniques will be used including (transient)transgenesis, epitope-tagging, proteomics, disease bioassays and confocal microscopy.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
The ideal candidate must hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Molecular Biology, have good communication skills, be able to work in a team and be highly motivated to conduct fundamental scientific research.
Job type: Research / Advising

The Faculty of Science
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is a university with an internationally acclaimed profile, located at the heart of the Dutch capital. As well as a world center for business and research, Amsterdam is a hub of cultural and media activities. The University of Amsterdam is a member of the League of European Research Universities.
The Faculty of Science of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) is one of Europe's foremost institutions for higher education and research in its chosen fields of specialization. It plays an active role in international science networks and collaborates with universities and industry. The Faculty has approximately 2,000 students and 1,500 staff members spread over four departments and ten research institutes. Each institute has its own research programme, a substantial part of which is externally financed by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the Dutch government, the EU and various private enterprises.
In 2010, the Faculty will relocate to Science Park Amsterdam. Ambitious building projects are paving the way for this relocation. The move will make the Park one of the largest centers of academic research in the Netherlands.
The Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) is one of the faculty's largest institutes. Within it, approximately 250 scientists and staff members perform excellent research centred on four themes: 1) The Living Cell, 2) Plants and Health, 3) Inside and Beyond the Brain and 4) Life Science Technologies.
Conditions of employment
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: See below
Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of four years (18 months plus a further 30 months after a positive evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The PhD student is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduates.
Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from € 2000,- in the first year and € 2558,- in the final year, according to the Dutch salary scales for PhD students.
