Radboud University Nijmegen
Job description
We are searching for a PhD-student for a project funded within the context of the national program ‘Talentenkracht’. In this project, it will be explored to what extent the emergence of talent in numerical, spatial and logical entities is mediated through language. Following a longitudinal design, the development of talent in mathematics in relation to language growth will be analysed in children at kindergarten level in two ways: at the group level and at an individual child level. At the group level, it will be examined to what extent mathematic and language abilities constitute interrelated or specific and autonomous networks by means of structural equation modeling. At the individual level, children’s growth curves on talents in numerical, spatial and logical reasoning abilities will be analysed as a function of language growth. Furthermore, it will be examined how the emergence of talent in mathematics in children with specific language deficits differs from their typically developing peers. Not only will the development of talent in numerical, spatial and logical reasoning abilities in the two groups of children be compared. Within the group of children with SLI it will also be examined how the individual variation in the distribution of talent in mathematics can be explained. The Ph.D-student is expected to: design, conduct and analyse quasi-experimental set-ups; report results in English papers and dissertation. A project proposal is available and can be requested.
