Job description
The Nijmegen Institute for Cognition and Information (NICI) currently has an opening for a PhD student within the project “Action and Language”. This project will focus on the role of actions in word and object recognition. Behavioral and neuroimaging (fMRI) experiments are currently planned, and resources are available to incorporate additional methods such as EEG and eye-tracking. The PhD student will work within a young, interdisciplinary team whose goal it is to investigate action semantics in adults and infants. This team is embedded in an internationally well-established research unit. We offer a unique, multidisciplinary working and learning environment with possibilities to develop expertise in a diversity of research areas and techniques. Short summary of the project The current project investigates overlap between language and action processing on the conceptual, semantic level. Specifically we investigate whether actions highly associated with a given object can be seen as action-semantic features of an object. Additionally we are interested in exploring how automatically action features are accessed when processing information about words and objects.

Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
- university graduate with a master’s degree ( or equivalent) in experimental/cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, or related cognitive neuroscience fields - demonstrated interest in and qualification for scientific research - experience with behavioral experiments and/or experience with functional MRI is a plus - the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of psychologists, linguists and cognitive neuroscientists in an international context - proficiency in English - excellent writing skills

Conditions of employment
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2500 - 3000

Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2558
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period

Additional conditions of employment:
The candidate will be appointed as a PhD student (1.0 FTE) for a period of four years. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated after 18 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2½ years. Salary: PhD scale.
