Job description
Function title: PhD Student Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences
The PhD project aims to get a better understanding of verbal and non-verbal cues that may signal potential risks for depression in adolscents, and pays special attention to the role of attachment in this. The project builds on a large data set collected in the NWO sponsored TRAILS project (TRacking Adolescents’ Individual Lives’ Study). In this project video-recordings were made of a large number of adolescents (both from high- and low-risk groups for depression), and additional information on personal and social characteristics was collected. Based on this data set, the PhD will perform different kinds of analyses of potential verbal and non-verbal cues to depression. Verbal cues may include the use of self-referential words (“I”, “me”, etc.), use of words with a positive or negative connotation, etc.; non-verbal cues may include subtle changes in the speech or particular facial expressions. Based on an analysis of such cues, computational models will be build that can make automatic predictions about risk factors.
