UK:PhD Scholarships for 2008-09 Entry University of Essex

School of Accounting, Finance and Management

The School of Accounting, Finance and Management at the University of Essex is inviting applications for PhD Scholarships commencing in October 2008 in any area of Accounting, Finance or Management.

The Scholarships will pay PhD tuition fees plus £1,500 per annum and are available to both Home/EU and Overseas candidates. The scholarships will be for full-time study and renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress for a period of up to three years.

Candidates will be expected to be available for interview at the University of Essex, Colchester Campus on 12 June 2008. We may also arrange telephone interviews for exceptional overseas students who will not be able to travel to the UK to appear at interview.

The School of Accounting, Finance and Management currently has 51 members of staff and 58 PhD students. It is a highly ranked research driven organisation with three strong groups.

The Accounting group is notable for the breadth and diversity of its research interests. Particular strengths lie in the areas of governance and accountability, business ethics, auditing, accounting and business history, corporate social responsibility, management accounting and critical accounting which include critical perspectives on globalisation, privatisation and public sector reforms.

The Finance group has research interests in all areas of finance, both applied and theoretical. It has particular strengths in banking (including credit risk), behavioural finance, corporate finance (including M&As), empirical finance (including financial econometrics), international finance, option pricing and the theory of finance.

The Management group pursues a very inter-disciplinary research agenda. Particular strengths lie in the areas of: critical management studies, art, aesthetics and philosophy of organisation and management, language and narrative analysis and critical perspective on globalisation, international management and technology.

Members of all research groups have many publications in leading international journals. They have organised a range of international conferences in their areas of research. A number of high-profile journals are edited by staff in the School, which contributes to a vibrant research culture.

Students may also have the opportunity to undertake paid Graduate Teaching Assistant work during their second and third year of PhD study.

ESRC Funding

We are delighted to announce that we have received recognition for the following Masters schemes:

  • MA Management Studies
  • MSc Accounting
  • MSc Accounting and Management
  • MSc International Management
  • MRES in Accounting
  • MRES in Management

As a result of this, one ESRC Quota Award is available for Home (UK), and EU students.

The 1+3 studentship covers a four-year period which includes one year of study for the MSc degree followed by three years of PhD study. (Some restrictions on MSc option choices may apply).

ESRC studentships cover fees plus a stipend for the period of the Masters degree and3 years of a PhD programme. Full ESRC awards are available to UK students; students from non-UK EU countries are eligible for a fees-only award.

The 1+3 scheme provides funding for one year of study towards the MRES in Accounting, the MRES in Management or the MA in Management Studies, MSc in Accounting, MSc in Accounting and Management, MSc in International Management followed by three years of study towards the PhD. It is intended for applicants with a good (First Class Honours or high 2:1) Bachelors degree or its equivalent. Continuation to the ‘+3' component is conditional upon passing the MA/MRES/MSc with Merit.

The School has a quota of 1 award for the academic year commencing October 2008. Under the quota system, the ESRC allow the School to nominate a student to receive the award, subject to ESRC approval. Students apply initially to the School which then forwards the successful application to the ESRC for the student's eligibility to be confirmed.

Deadline for applications for a quota award need to be received by 7 April 2008.
