Job description
The aim of this PhD project is to develop efficient habit modifiers for salt (NaCl) crystals by investigating their influence on the atomic-scale mechanism of crystallisation. The main reason to tailor the crystal shape of salt is to prevent caking during transport. The work will involve a wide range of in situ experimental techniques, including light microscopy, atomic-force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. This four-year PhD project will take place at the Solid State Chemistry group of the Institute for Molecules and Materials and will be performed in close collaboration with AkzoNobel Salt R&T in Deventer.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
The applicant should have an MSc degree in Chemistry or Physics and should be interested in the physical chemistry of crystal growth, including theory. Good experimental skills are required, but previous experience with crystal growth is not necessary. Research within the group involves interaction with several people, good social skills are therefore essential, together with a good command of spoken and written English. The candidate should be willing to finish his/her PhD in four years.

The IMM is an interdisciplinary Research School within the Faculty of Science. The aim of the IMM is to conduct research and train undergraduate and graduate students in the field of functional molecular structures and materials. The central research theme of the Solid State Chemistry group is crystal growth. The goal is to obtain a fundamental understanding of the processes that occur during growth of crystals and to apply this understanding to the prediction and control of crystal morphology and perfection. A strong interaction exists between theoretical, computational and experimental methods and a wide range of systems and problems is studied. The group collaborates closely with the Applied Materials Science group.

Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2500 - 3000
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2558
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: The first contract will be for 1.5 years, with possible extension by 2.5 years
Maximum hours per week: 40
Additional conditions of employment:
The candidate will be appointed as a PhD student for a period of four years. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated after 18 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.
