G.A.Henty: 19th century adventure stories and history
International Centre for Research in Children’s Literature, Literacy and Creativity
Starting September 08
Background
G.A.Henty (1832-1902) was a prolific and influential nineteenth century writer of adventure stories for boys, circa 144 novels and numerous stories many of which were set in the imperialist campaigns of the period. Henty was one of the first war correspondents, and a number of his books contain versions of his reports in the text and also reflect his views. Henty’s reports as a war correspondent were influential in shaping knowledge and attitudes at a time when communication centred upon written and newspaper reports. The major research ‘Brown Collection’ of the works of G.A. Henty plus writing on Henty is located in the Centre providing an ideal resource for this study.
