Job description
Function title: PhD position in Tectonics/Structural Geology
The Department of Tectonics/Structural geology of the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences of VU University in Amsterdam is searching a candidate for a new PhD project named Miocene subsidence and Pliocene to Recent uplift in the record of Miocene sediments of Southern Turkey and surrounding regions.
Project
The project is part of VAMP (Vertical Anatolia Movement Project) a multinational effort developed within the ESF initiative TopoEurope to understand the development of continental plateaus and, thereby, the interactions between lithospheric and erosional processes. VAMP reaches its goals by applying a wide spectrum of disciplines ranging from tectonics to paleoclimatology, from sedimentology to numerical modelling. The VU University component of VAMP focuses on the tectonic analysis of Miocene marine sediments outcropping in Southern Turkey and imaged in the offshore between Turkey and Cyprus. Using a multiscale combination of field geology, structural and tectonic techniques, the PhD will unravel a) the history of subsidence/sedimentation leading to the deposition of the marine sediments and b) the tectonic during plateau uplift. Eventually, the results on the onshore will be integrated with the analysis of seismic data from the offshore. Numerical modelling techniques will be used to integrate the different observations
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
Qualifications
For this ambitious project we seek an outstanding student with a strong background in field geology and with the affinity for large scale quantitative studies. The candidate holds a MSc. or equivalent degree in Earth Sciences. The ideal candidate is a curious person with a wide background able to interact with all the other components of the VAMP project.
