Job description
Microstructure and phase transformations in TRIP steels studied by means of electron microscopy techniques and by means of atomistic simulation.
TRIP steels are a new class of steels with superior properties: they combine high ductility with high strength. The key feature of TRIP steels are the netastable austenite grains that transform into the martensite phase under the application of strain. The shear process in combination with the higher atomic volume of martensite causes the so-called “transformation induced plasticity” (TRIP). In this project, special attention is given to the hardening treatments that are currently developed at the Corus company to make the new steels even more attractive to customers in automotive and aerospace industry. The phase transformation that gives this material its special properties is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The microstructure and the transformation will be studied in scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The same phase transformation will be studied in the computer, by means of molecular dynamics simulations that provide very detailed information about the kinetics on an atomic scale.
