University of Amsterdam Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences
Amsterdam, 1018 WB (Noord-Holland), 38 hours per week
Job description
The research program Developmental Psychology is concerned with cognitive development at both ends of the lifespan-cognitive changes during childhood and senescence. Although the primary focus is on cognitive development, secondary questions relate to the age-related changes in the interaction between cognition and affect and to cognitive deficits that may occur when development goes astray or to deficits that are associated with cognitive decline.
Title of PhD project
Fluency in Reading: Behavioural and neural correlates of cognitive processing in children with developmental dyslexia and typically reading children.
Project description
The primary focus of the project is on the underlying behavioural and neural mechanisms for dyslexic's lack of reading fluency. Fluent word recognition requires synchronization of visual-orthographic and auditory-phonological modalities. It is assumed that dyslexics process auditory and phonological information at a different rate than visual-orthographic information. Asynchrony causes inefficient word recognition and reduced fluency. A series of studies will be conducted to assess the underlying behavioural and neural mechanisms for this lack of fluency. The proposed studies will improve our understanding of the underlying causes of dyslexia and provide an evidence-based intervention to remediate dyslexic's fluency problems in reading.
