Background
The Dutch consortium High Tech Automotive Systems (www.htas.nl) has identified driving guidance and vehicle efficiency as prime focus areas for growth and innovation. Funding has been secured for the MILLS project on vehicle dynamics control as part of the driving guidance focus area. Research subject The objective of the MILLS project is to design, develop and test an improved Vehicle Dynamics Control System (VDC ), based on wheel load sensing input, Vehicle State Estimation (VSE) and tyre technology. Increased safety as a result of this project comprises 1) Reduced Braking Distance; 2) Stability (Improved ESP based on load sensing and new tyre technology) and 3) Human-Machine Interfacing, i.e., improved human-to-vehicle interaction.
Tasks
PhD1 - State Estimation and Fault-Tolerant Control
Development of vehicle state estimation and control strategies that reliably perform in a wide range of road, tyre and driving conditions, and provide safe operation modes in case of sensor failure.
PhD2 – Human-Machine Interfacing
Automotive and aviation applications have shown that vehicle control strategies which relieve the human controller can lead to reduced driver attention as evidenced by prolonged reaction times. Volunteer experiments will be performed to investigate effects of innovative vehicle control strategies on the driver, and to define the desired behaviour of the controlled vehicle.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
The candidate should have an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Control or a closely related field, with outstanding marks, as well as a strong background in Control, System Identification and/or Human-Machine Interfacing. We seek applicants with a strong combination of academic attitude and engineering skills, excellent writing and presentation skills in English, and independent research and teamwork capabilities.
